Use these tips and tricks to create interesting special effects with watercolor. Techniques include wipeouts, lifting, salt, plastic wrap, exacto knife, spattering, and spraying. You'll also learn how to use masking fluid. Thanks to my husband Jeff for putting this together, especially the introduction, which was a technical nightmare.
***** Note! I am having problems replying to some people due to issues with KZfaq and their recent changes. My apologies. I'll reply when it finally works. ******
All paints by Old Holland and Cotman.
Incredible White Mask liquid frisket available at Jerry's Artarama.

Frisket brush is an old #4 round brush. I have used it again and again for over a year. Clean your brush as thoroughly as you can after use, but expect that it will eventually become rubbery.

Dorothy Atchison I agree with You about just telling the technique without to much work, must try this. I’ve tried it before but didn’t get the result I wanted. Probably I can get it now.

I love the effects of the plastic wrap the best - really neat looking. The salt application ended up looking like frost on a window - like that too. This would be a fun way to introduce water coloring to children. Thanks for sharing these techniques!

+JonKaren Morningstar Ditto! I am now a pauper, but had bought the very best oils, acrylics and watercolours. All lost in a move. My #7 sable cost $80 in 1986-can't think about that now. Kelly, you have inspired me to just walk everywhere with my sketch book.

Thank you! I just came across your videos... I'm tired of these people who's introductions last a minute or two. 30 seconds in and you've already covered a few techniques... a few minutes in and you've covered several techniques in the time people usually take to cover one. You're def worth subscribing to.

Thanks to Jeff for all his hard work that translates into outstanding videos. And thanks Kelly. I have been searching KZfaq for watercolour exercises just like this one I did-back in the '80's. So important to get a solid foundation. Can not count the hours and hours I spent on the piano doing endless scales-so we aren't going to suddenly become Turners in a week. I "lost" all my paints and all my brushes in a move-and I had bought the very best. Ouch... P.S.-- I also "lost" a bin nicely labelled, "TOOLS". Nest time it will be labelled, "Bin # 3"!! I don't even have a hammer..

I remember the first time I've used Salt on a painting. It was a stunning little carribean Island and I wanted to create Stars. My teacher gave me those bigger Saltthings... Well. I returned to my painting the next day only to find it had warped into a surreal scene completely devoid of it's former beauty... It's still in my collection somewhere. Thanks for sharing. I haven't used watercolors since my schooldays and thanks to great and talented people like you I'm rediscovering them properly.

Thank you Kelly for such easy and inspiring how-to's. I used to paint realistically in oils, after an injury to my neck I cannot tolerate holding my arms up for long periods of time and so am switching to watercolors. I love/hate them because they are such a different media than oils, challenging certainly, but I am determined to keep at this, even if I only practice clouds and skies for days. So far I am satisfied/content with my efforts about half the time. My goal is to be able to paint anything I desire with some of the results I am learning from your videos. Your work is so beautiful and the background I have in color profiles along with photo restoration techniques are serving me well in tandem with your lessons!

+johngo6283 Also great when you put a glaze over your wall paint and scrunch up a rag or plastic. I heard of one effect where you just layered torn brown paper all over your wall. Then go wild with all the glazes/gel/stains you could put over the beautiful texture already on the wall.

Thanks for these tips - very clearly explained. I like using the spattering with paper stencils and multiple colours. It gives a pointillist effect, rather like airbrushing but more textured. Spraying is also good on watercolour pencils, especially Inktense. And the plastic wrap one I really love... great for negative painting afterwards.

I'm following along in your tutorials to refresh my techniques from ages ago, but I just wanted to say I found a masking fluid with a needlepoint applicator. It comes in 20 gauge and 18 gauge and you don't have to sacrifice a brush! Oops, got excited and left off that it is Fineline brand and comes in an empty bottle if you prefer using a different brand of masking fluid.
