Very beautiful! Thankyou for sharing. I really want to do more painting with pens soon after watching your last few videos. I’ve been swatching all my pencils into a new swatch book for the last few days and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching you whilst I do it ❤❤❤

I’m kicking myself a little that I don’t work this way more often - the scope for mixing colours and having an even bigger range of colour and effects to work with markers is huge 😁 and on a personal level, it adds a lot of relaxation and enjoyment to colouring 😉

Hi Jackie! Welcome to the Netherlands! We had that weather for months….Luckily it was a bit better the last couple of days, but it is rainy and 15 degrees right now. I love your colored picture! It’s brighter than Ken’s but i like that! I have really cheep waterbased markers with a big nib from a set i got years and years ago and they are awful, but before i throw them away i want to try this methode. I think it is going to work! The colors are really bright but with water i can make them less bright. Thanks for this!!!

Question! I am affraid with this book that the colors go to the other side of the paper and ruin the other page……..does it?

If you use the very dark colours or the marker heavily or with a lot of water it might bleed through, I’d suggest trying some out on a back page or somewhere that won’t upset you if it bleeds. But light washes allowed to dry thoroughly in between should be reasonably safe….unfortunately there are no guarantees unless you are working in heavy cardstock or watercolour paper. Your weather sounds similar, though it has been sunny it’s been quite cold the past few days going down to 0 or minus temps at night in some places and ice on the car in the mornings….that’s cold for us 🤣

When I painted in watercolor I always used a limited palette. Typically a single pigment split primary (warm and cool of red, yellow, blue), along with burnt sienna just for quick mixing of brown and grey. With these seven colors you can paint anything. You could certainly do the same with markers used in this way. The issue is 90% of the time small sets don't provide the right colors. You need to buy open stock. Pencil sets (standard and watersoluble) are the same way.. very few 12 sets give you the colors you actually need for mixing. It's a real shame and I think brands are doing artists a real disservice.. and they should know better. Perhaps it's on purpose to encourage additional purchases. Another favorite limited palette is a modified earth tone palette.. yellow ochre, alizarin crimson alternative (actual alizarin is highly fugitive), ultramarine blue, and burnt sienna which gives an earth orange as well as grey mixed 50/50 with ultramarine and a variety of browns mixed with a touch of any of the other three colors ... this one gives very muted earthy colors and is great for landscapes, while being super portable.

I think you might be on to something there with “subliminal encouragement” to buy more colours….that’s where some colour theory becomes very handy for colour mixing 😉 I’m very guilty though of wanting all the colours available to me and forget that I can actually mix a fair few colours myself with a little bit of thought and effort. Thanks for your input 😊

@@Spare_Room_Studio Oh me too for sure. I CAN mix it, doesn't mean I want to especially with my work schedule limiting my time for art. I just want to put color to paper and make something. Another issue with pencils and pens is that so many are "convenience" mixes already.. it makes mixing more challenging. Sometimes it's not obvious what pigments are in the color. The only pencil I know of that provides pigment information is the carandache museum aquarelles which are outrageously expensive (I own them..nice but not "that" nice and one of the most frustrating color palettes I've ever seen). Only 24 of the 76 are single pigment, many are more than three pigments, and one pink in particular has EIGHT pigments mixed in.

@@waymire01 wow! 8 pigments?! That makes me think of waiting at the paint counter while they mix a gazillion drops of different colour together into your tin to create a seemingly simple colour 🤣

@@Spare_Room_Studio If you are ever interested to see, the info is a bit hard to find. Kim Crick has a full swatch sheet for the Museums with the pigments listed on her website. She also tested them for lightfastness. The info would be really helpful if anyone wanted to make a truly professional/archival set of WC pencils out of open stock. I'm really rather surprised the Albrecht Durers don't give the info. Jane Blundell has a very good swatch chart for those on her website, and it includes the older colors and their replacements as well, which may be helpful if you have to replace yours.. if I remember correctly you have had them for a long time.
