Joseph is a true master of the watercolour medium whose magical touch produces wonderfully loose, atmospheric paintings. On a summers day in Melbourne he paints sailing boats in Albert Park before travelling to France where we catch up with him in Paris in cold but sunny winter weather. Here he paints street scenes and a view of the river Seine. Returning to Melbourne he then uses one of the watercolours produced on his French travels to work up into a larger studio version.

Joseph is not just talented, he's a genius. There are many watercolour artists out there, but Joseph is a very unique one. I've watched his "Impressions in Watercolour" and what he does and how he instructs is fabulous.

He's great fun and fascinating to watch in a workshop. He can do in 30 minutes what the rest of us would dream of painting in a day or two, throw that one down and then do three or four more before the end of the day. Then go out for Margaritas! Love ya Joseph!

My wife, pictured, has been a great inspiration to my work. She came up behind me, one day while watching me work on a complex pen and in and made remark similar to this, 'what would happen if you put some of your water color to that...." Well, why not. Just the art of drawing came back slow after some strokes. I once taught water color to adults as a T.A. in the S,F, Unified school District, in California. All my control left me from the brain injury. It is liberating to watch this very talented artist do, what I once could do. Rock On! Huge Fan!

I love this guy. I study his paintings for hours on end. I can't stop looking at them. I figured he would be too great to even be on you tube. He is the greatest watercolor artists of current time and Wyeth, Monet would feel humbled. I would do anything to get a watercolor lesson from him to see if my assumptions on how he does it are at least close to correct. I was just getting ready to do my first painting with a style similar to his (opposite my normal style) when I came across this video while looking for impressionist watercolor artists.

Wyeth's middle name is Xerox, and his medium is tempera. And Monet had no talent for watercolour. So Joseph in all truth is superior to both of them in this medium, and technically surpasses all but a very few of the best watercolour artists that ever lived.

Same here Joe. I have spent a considerable part of my life just looking at his paintings. Trying to figure out... Why ? What? How? ...For me he is the best ever in this medium. Absolutely no doubt. Alvaro is a close second. Yes its hard to leave Sargent out, but these two have actually changed the way people percieve watercolours. Its no longer a medium for just studies. There is something really special about a well done watercolor, oil simply cant achieve that.

"im never completely satisfied with anything i do, you never quite conquer it" shweew! i thought it was just me! i have paintings that people rave over and ask how i did it but i look at them and say "eesh, WHY did i do THAT?" "how can they love this piece, just look at that building its all a mess" but i guess if we could just hang it up and call it perfect we would never strive to improve would we?

I am down with you 100%. I usually show new painting to my girlfriend, family, others and ask them to find the problems (That only I see in it). They have never found a single one. With watercolor, those problems are truly nothing more than a deviation from our original vision.

He's not only a great painter, but an outstanding designer as well. And, oh yes, a master watercolorist. Contrary to the previously stated opinion, most pure watercolorists are excellen\t painters. Otherwise they would be extremely frustrated painters, and would migrate to other less demanding mediums.

@ericsnowsucks what I meant is that he cannot be put in the list of pure watercolourists. His art in all sense is magnificient but to my personal sense (being a watercolourist myself whom you might better know as Steve Hall) I would say that this not a very pleasant method to teach students how to approach the wide variety of watercolour. Thank You. try to post other videos of this artist.

About people mentioning the term "pure watercolor", why would you be allowed to do everything with watercolor, but as soon as you use opaque areas in a painting, it is suddenly no longer "pure watercolor". Makes no sense. Use whatever means it takes that produce the desired end result. I think with regard to looks, really bright highlights and areas are probably best represented by white unpainted paper. But I can see how hazy areas, like buildings and mountains fading in the distance are even better (and perhaps more faithfully) achieved by fading a colored area with a milky white.

It is all about what kind of white is used. White can be pure white pigment with gum arabic, or stuffed white with fillers to give it more body. If white pigment is used to mix with other colours, it adds no body to the paint, but it produces pastel tones which are sought after. But, if body white is used (pigment stuffed with fillers) too much and not dilluted enough, the final look is that of gouache painting. There is watercolour, there is gouache, and they are not same mediums.

@10000372 What could you possibly mean, "not a pure watercolorist"? Just because he paints better than the majority, and I mean REALLY huge majority of watercolorists, that he's being "fake" or something?

yes i accept him to be a good painter but watercolour is itself a medium that requires to be exploited but i would rather dissuade young artists to follow such teckniques being myself a watercolourist
