Rowland Hilder use of black is brilliant and very effective. Many artists will tell you to swerve black, but Hilder use of it is masterful

Thank you so much for this video. I just discovered Roland Hilder the other day and immediately bought one of his books. He was a wonderful painter. Thank you also for giving us permission to express ourselves artistically outside of the tradition Watercolor rules. Foundations yes, rules no.

I absolutely love this one, it’s a perfect combination of realism and loose, I can’t wait to do it when my building work settles down. I also just love how you constantly push yourself to try different styles in all the mediums, as a member it gives us a very rounded choice as we too experiment to find our own style, which I know many of your members are doing . It must be a real joy for you to see everyone’s progression from at times unpromising beginnings to wonderful art when they have taken your teaching to heart. It was the best thing which ever happened to me when I discovered your channel, Thankyou as always, a small word which doesn’t adequately express how grateful I am

I became fan of HIlder's work during my time spent with Ron Ranson. As a result I toured Kent. Found several books of Hilder's work and one of his instruction. Hope to see more of these about Hilder's methods.

Beautiful! Personally love line & wash watercolor art but YES the subject matter is important. Your rendering is awesome & no, the black ink wasn’t overpowering. The cast shadows in the foreground added much to the composition. Well done my friend. 👌🏻👏🏻👌🏻

This is the first of your videos I've watched, having been pointed to you via a FB poster. I've recently looked at Rowland Hilder, after another artist did a tutorial of a similar landscape/building. Yours is beautiful, and the pens work so well. I've had some Tombows for Christmas, so I'll definitely be trying them to emulate...love it, the painting had such a cool peaceful vibe..
@slskene
@slskene 2 жыл бұрын
You may have already discovered this, but most of the Tombow markers are not waterproof so wouldn't work for this technique. Just google the specific marker you've got beforehand :)

Happy New Year Sir Smoothie. Another stunning demonstration, which is perhaps achievable for relative newbies like me. I've been told about avoiding black shadows too, so I tend to go for indigo or shadow violet (a Daniel Smith paint) or sometimes a burnt sienna mix. If I need to make it darker I just use less water. I think the pure black in a painting can be too strong, but you have used it to emphasise the dark shadow areas of small shapes which also form part of the focal point, so it works well in this example.

I like the style. Having seen Some of Rowland's works I must say I do prefer the "softer" appearance of your interpretation of his work. Since you asked for input, I'm thinking that a dark gray to account for some reflected light from the show with black for the deep shadows would be another approach to this piece.
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input, I like your suggestion of using gray, I will try that, I've used gray ink in paintings before and was pleased with the results,
