Great demonstration! I definitely believe paint first is the way to go for anyone who lacks watercolour confidence. I feel that I have spoiled many a satisfactory sketch by my crack-handed application of paint. However, an unpromising melange of watercolours can only be improved by the addition of line work to give it some structure and meaning. Good linework can improve indifferent watercolours, but indifferent watercolours can ruin good linework. That's my experience, anyway!

Thumbs Up & Subscribed… 4 me I spent some time with the final results & in the end I went with the one on the right, the one you did second. Why? well the building was more square & balanced. The first suffered from narrowing at the top, such as you might get from taking a photo. Perhaps, put any reference through Photoshop or similar software before using. Loved it, more please!

This completely captured our attention! We werer thinking that the second approach- paint 1st/draw 2nd- would be great for artists wanting to use a non-waterproof ink, or maybe a fountain pen. Recently, another artist shared with us that she makes heavy use of tracing paper to develop line art before incorporating it into a finished piece. That might not be sufficiently improvisational for every artist, but we think it might help artists who are afraid to just dive into a painting. Thanks again for another great video- we always look forward to new uploads here!

Thank you so much for watching and taking the time out of your day to leave a comment. I've not heard of the technique that you mentioned with tracing paper but it sounds interesting. I do feel that the second approach is more liberating. Instantly that expectation to create something hyper realistic is taken away and you're left with being able to be spontaneous and rolling with whatever ends up on the paper. ☺️

I enjoyed both approaches to sketching. The details in each were amazing. I just "sketched" my way from Amsterdam to Budapest on a Viking river cruise. I didn't capture as many details as you have shown here but had a great time painting/sketching. I was surprised to hear you say that the people in Ryde couldn't afford electricity. Is that really an issue? Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much Mulle 😊❤️ a big warm welcome to my channel ❤️ Jenna is an absolute star and I am still in shock that she would do such a lovely thing for her fellow artists. 🥰 I don't know about you, but at school it was drummed into me that you always sketch/draw your image before painting, so flipping that around can seem really illogical and scary. It's fun though, because it takes away that element that it's got to be perfect, so you can relax, have fun with it and roll with the results. It also helps you look at things with a different perspective. I'm still however, more comfortable sketching first.

Hello Lynette, that was a beautiful motif. I liked the second picture a bit better. It is a bit looser. I find it difficult to apply the colour first and then to make the contours with the fineliner. You did a great job and I will try it once. Get out of your comfort zone.😄 Thank you very much for sharing.♥

Hello Gabi ❤️🥰 I prefer the second one too because of all the colour bleeds that created a much more interesting wash. I think because we're usually taught at school to draw first, it's difficult to get your head around doing it a different way from what you are used to. Thank you so much for watching and for your support ❤️❤️❤️
