Great info as always. As you say, it’s about getting to know your plants individually and learning their needs just by how they look and taking your climate, the potting medium etc, into consideration also. Awesome video and probably the best I’ve seen on cacti watering 👍 Your collection is stunning also 👌

Thank you, I am glad you found the information useful. I can't teach plant intuition which is what I rely on heavily but try to focus on the practical components and hope that in time people will develop their own level of intuition and connection with their plants. I see you have a great cacti growing medium and you know your soil😆👌💖I have had rot issues. Our summer monsoon season a few years ago rotted my Astrophytums. They don't do well here. In Japan we have very dry and sunny winters with a great difference between day and night temperatures. The summer is wet, humid and extremely hot. From August we get a drier hot summer and winters are very dry with temperatures below -5℃ at night and day temperatures about 10/12℃.
@87walker
@87walker 2 жыл бұрын
I think the best Astrophytum have come from Japan! Do you have big climate variances within the country? I live in the south of Australia which is very cold in winter & scorching hot & dry in summer but in the north it is relatively warm all year round with high humidity.
@newmanmansell760
@newmanmansell760 2 жыл бұрын
I come from Japan and summers have high humidity and many rainy days. I water with a 'spritz' every 3 weeks or so because the air has a lot of moisture in the air. In Autumn through winter the days are sunny, the nights freezing and low humidity. I water every 2nd to 3rd week. For those in dry, low humidity summer areas then water well when dry, even ever week is fine, And if winters are wet and rainy then only 'spritz water' on days that are sunny and the humidity is lower than 40%. Never let a cacti get that dry that the roots desiccate. That can happen in low humidity and dry cold or hot conditions. A cacti will have a battle coming back from that and if it does grow new roots, it will take a year of recovery. To water a cacti with desiccated roots can make fungi and rot from the decomposition of the dead roots.
@87walker
@87walker 2 жыл бұрын
That is a very good point. My cacti go through a wintering process which means no water for sometimes 4 months. Care needs to be taken when commencing watering so the new roots have time to form and dead roots heal over.

Also i've recently bought two Gymnocalyciums, species unknown sadly but at least now i know there not rot prone as most websites would have you believe, i'll start a weekly routine of watering them depending on weather obviously.

This was very informative. I have a few astrophytum that have "pancaked" (flattened out). I live in the U.S. and we are about to enter spring. I feel like I need to water them but am afraid of the rotting issue. A few have shrunk at the base. Is this a sign of underwatering or overwatering? I would like to avoid pulling them out to check the roots if possible. They still firm though. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

So glad I found your video! I just got my very first cactus, a Gymnocalycium Stenopleurum (I found that out only by quite a bit of research). Met him at the garden center thanks to his glorious little pink flower! As a complete newbie this video was the most helpful I've found out of the tons I've watched lately!! Could I ask you some quick questions?! How much sunlight (direct or indirect) do Gymnocalycium's really love? Right now I've got him by a Southwest facing window that gets nice direct morning sun and then indirect afternoon light, and I like to open the window often. Will he be happy in these conditions? And how often can I expect him to flower with the proper care? His flower died off not long after I had him home and I was afraid it was my fault, but I didn't know how long it would have lasted anyway. Do the flowers typically only last a few days in full bloom? Will I have to wait until next season or is there a chance he may yet sprout another this summer?

Hi 87 walker; really enjoy your informative videos. Also the collection containing some of my favs. A question: how do you treat cacti with a split? I have several Trichos with that issue. Also, being a musician i cannot "squeeze" my plants to test for water due to thorns. I use a meter but you suggest visual exam as well. I`ll give that a try. I have 117 music vids on You Tube, the most recent being "Bob Dylan & Joe Seddon-Hurricane Carter." Next comes some cactus videos. Australia is fantastic, the wildlife awesome. I`ve bred Womas and Jungle pythons which are quite rare here in the United States. I`ll check back for your advice on splitting. Best to you mate, Joe Seddon

Great videos! I subbed with notifications! One thing I noticed though is you said bi-weekly is twice per week for you. Some people may be confused as generally bi-weekly means every other week, once per 2 weeks. So your bi-weekly watering would be 4 times in a 2 week period, where as someone watching would normally take bi-weekly as meaning once per two weeks. That could be a significant difference in watering frequency. Awesome collection by the way! I'm up to about 30 different varieties in my collection currently.
@87walker
@87walker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the heads up! It can be challenging articulating information that will be consistent across the globe as I have viewers from all over the world, I did not even consider that bi-weekly would be considered anything else other than twice per week. Hey Walker! Great video! Since it’s winter time now in Australia, could you tell me what you do with the winter period? I have a astrophytum asterias and it’s looking a bit sad right now. Should I water him or is that usually how astrophytum asterias are during winter? Where they shrink a bit. I also have 2 gymnocalycium and I’ve been told to strictly not water them at all during the entire winter! Could you please tell me if that’s safe to do so? Cheers
@87walker
@87walker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! My plants go through a wintering process (no water at all) for a period of 8-16 weeks depending on how rot prone they are. Gymnocalycium fall into the 8 week (weather dependant) category and Astrophytum are at the higher end 10 weeks plus. It is safe to withhold watering for most cacti for this amount of time. Some experience root loss and often don't recover, Melocactus is a prime example, they require more specialised management. Hope that helps and Happy Gardening!

Can you use all purpose soil for cacti ? I purchased a big purple bag from B&Q and it was near the Cacti plants so I’m guessing that it’s ok? But I watered my cacti plants about 5days ago and the soil is slightly damp is this a worry for root rotting or will it be ok ?
@87walker
@87walker 3 жыл бұрын
I use general potting mix for my cacti that is mixed with other ingredients like gravel & perlite. I do not buy and do not reccomend "cacti & succulent potting mix" Your substrate mix should dry out at a rate this is appropriate for your climate. Humid areas require a mix that dries faster than areas with a dry climate. It really comes down to trial and error and what works best in your climate. Good luck & Happy Gardening!

Depends on how cold your winter gets. A friend of mine in Virginia does not water a single drop for up to 6 months!
