Waterlemon Cay Guide - St John's USVI Best Snorkeling 2021- 4K

Today my wife Rachel and I decided to take a journey from St Thomas to Waterlemon Cay on St John. After an hour drive, 45 minute car barge, and 1 mile hike we were rewarded with our favorite snorkeling on all of St John. We hope you enjoy taking this adventure with us as we snorkel and see sharks, sting rays, corals, colorful fish, angel fish, and crystal blue water :)
Disclaimer - The English language tricked us and we thought it was called Watermelon Cay at the time of filming :)
A few tips and tricks if you go -
-The trail is called the Leinster Bay Trail - www.alltrails.com/trail/us-vi...
-When getting in the water to start the snorkel be careful of sea urchins
-We found it best to snorkel counter clockwise as the currents were a little strong swimming clockwise
-Check out the big bay right off the beach for turtles and sometimes nurse sharks resting
-Bring water as it is pretty far off the path from any stores or restaurants

Love this spot to snorkel. Tons of turtles, nurse sharks, and beautiful fish. Beware….tons of sea urchins too. I stepped on one and now have the spikes deeply embedded in my foot. Medical staff advised to leave it alone and just soak my foot in vinegar. Didn’t ruin my day though…I continued to snorkel after being stung. So glad I did. Very active reefs and multitude of fish, sharks and turtles. It was a perfect day minus the sea urchin sting. Highly recommend a visit here when your at STJ VI!

Yes!! We should’ve mentioned that as well! Sea urchins all over and a bit of a current! We definitely recommend wearing flippers. So glad you enjoyed this spot as much as we did!

I will tell y'all this cherish these times...(me and my wife have) and we have been to stt 7 or 8 times. our favorite is salt pond on stj, but we have never done waterlemon cay...but we will in October. Trunk and cinnamon bay have cay's next to them that are very enjoyable also. PLUS when the sweet lime bushes are in bloom they smell wonderful....you will see. All the best........DEX

Waterlemon is fun. Yes, Nurse sharks are often at Waterlemon. Next time, try Haulover South. I like it even better especially out to the right along the rocks. Just watch out for sea urchins- especially when getting in/out. I also really like going out with Low Key Watersports in Cruz Bay. Ask to go out to Carvel Rock- much bigger fish due to the stronger current. They offer relatively short, but fun scuba/snorkel tours that are reasonably priced.

You'll love it!! Someone in our group had brought their drone which worked great at this location, but on other beaches was disabled due to being near flight paths (which is a lot of area given the islands are so small!)

Hello Jaychel , just found your video about Watermelon Cay , cuz looking for snorkeling spots in St. john for our trip. I have questions if you don’t mind, did you snorkel far from shore for better corals and fish ? They said Watermelon Cay is best spot for turtles? And also about the current on the L side of little island looking out from shore , did you circle that little island without any problems ? Thanks so much and looking forward to hear from you

Hello!! Around the little island is where the great fish and corals are!! There isn’t much near the shore. I would say Maho on St John is a better place for turtles! We’ve only seen one at waterlemon and it was obscured! If you’re on St Thomas, Brewers bay is our “fail safe” location for turtles!! We saw turtles EVERY time we went snorkeling! We also saw some at Salt Pond. There is a bit of a pull/current around the island so I’d definitely recommend fins! With fins, it’s not much of a problem!

You should absolutely stay on St John, so you don't have to do the barge over for this. There are other great snorkel spots too!

Also I think they pronounce it Cay, not Key. it's not like in Florida, where they are keys...

@@jtidema We heard it both ways when we were there! One of the marine biology students there told us it was "Key" so that is what we stuck with, but it definitely could be the other way :)
