To everyone who noticed that there isn't a reflection of the watermelon, it's a part of the effect. The idea is that Zach stole the other half of a watermelon from the reflection. With that, here's an actual mistake in the clip; a part of his right hand disappears in the reflection, likely due to the mask used to hide the green screen watermelon that was used for reference.

I love that you happily admit you're not good at something (yet) so you're going to find another way to get the result. It's really encouraging to learn from people who (a) are still learning and improving themselves, and (b) are confident enough to be honest with their audience. I'm learning so much from you.

i think in the watermelon trick, Zach is holding a half watermelon the whole time. and the other half is cg. you can see the shadow of the cg watermelon is creating a darker shadow when it overlaps with a real shadow at 0:45 and the non shadow table is cutting a bit out of the shadow at 0:54 (where the watermelon touches the chopping board, you might have to go frame by frame). The moment when his hands slide on it is just an aligning issue, because what he probably did was he replaced the half watermelon with a cg watermelon over the real one to help with the aligning. you can see that it is a real one underneath at 0:46 because there is some red spill over the table from the inside of the real half. and at 0:48 you can see that there is no way that the inside part of the watermelon is fake because it has perfect lighting and real Specular highlights. oh and the "watermelon" sign is added later, you can see at 0:46 the girl goes through the sign.

In my mind it could be done even with a real watermelon: The mirror would actually be a box, colored in green and opened at the top. Over the bottom of the box you put a camera, so that you can record what an actual mirror would see. You start the scene holding the real watermelon halfway inside the box and pulling it out. You then put it on the cutting board, cut it in half and proceed to move it over the box in the same position you started with. And yeah, I know, it would be extremely hard to match the exact positioning. When you edit the video, you replace the green of the box with the recording of the camera in the bottom, with the one scene where you were holding the half melon, so that it looks like an actual mirror. You then cut to the scene with you taking out the full watermelon, and there you go. Loop. Am I missing something? But anyway as you pointed out, he's probably not using a real watermelon for the reasons you explained
@marcel_chavez
@marcel_chavez 4 жыл бұрын
Placing the camera over the bottom of the box wouldnt help much due to how the mirror reflects light depending on the angle on which you are looking at the mirror, so if the camera on which you are recording the action is placed in front of the person doing the action that would mean that the angle of reflection is different from the one that you are recording with your second camera, perhaps you can record the reflection afterwards but I still think is quite hard to achieve a good perspective plus giving it a glassy look and stuff haha, but still its a good idea and if you do it properly you can loop the entire thing almost seamlessly ;)

for a similar effect we did following: We used a cord and wrapped it around our fingers, when we pulled our hands apart the cord was pulled tight and helped us to hold the hands as if we were holding an object. This helped us to remove the cord very easily, for tracking points you can see small X on the palms. So you could also use the mirror without extreme effort, since it contains the same information.
