You can also use acorns for your tannic acid. Quite abundant around here, especially this time of year.

Great video! After so many attempts I finally got the results and it survived for atleast 2 wash. I'm trying to find an alternative for tannic acid though and working on its flammablity.

I'd love to know what the tannic acid does exactly, is it forming crosslinks like formaldehyde would or is something else at work? I know barely anything about chemistry but your videos are motivating me to change that :).
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 7 жыл бұрын
I think it is cross linking it mate

Robert Murray-Smith pretty cool, if i find time for it i will try what this does as replacement for formaldehyde in some of the preparations the casein book you recommended and see if it makes much difference

When you say "all this stuff is food grade", does that include the borax? I only ask because I'm a potter and am experimenting with using milk to seal earthenware pots. It seems to work quite well so far (pour hot milk into a mug and leave it for a couple of days), but casein could be a good idea.

I think the million dollar question after this is... Is the cup of tea safe to drink afterwards? :-D Thanks for another brilliant upload. How safe is this rubber for say...tiny human beings who still think their nose can be detached and re-attached to their face? I know you said all the ingredients are food grade or relatively quite harmless, but would the combination of all those ingredients make the final product less safe than the individual stuff you put in?
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 9 жыл бұрын
If I were going to make a product out of this I would have it safety tested but this is an experiment done at your risk if you choose to repeat. If you plan on making a product out of it or giving it to children the responsibility to test this is yours

Hi Robert 🤓We got some commercial tents made in China and the inside of the canvas most likely has this as the coating . They developed mould spots after a few uses from moisture. Probable didn't use the tanic acid or maybe their is an antimould like green banana flour that can be added . Any suggestion for something to prevent mould Robert ?

there are quite a few things mate - soap shops sell it as a bottle of additive - Euoxyl 90 springs to mind

I was wondering if casein and whey were the same thing? Or if casein can be substituted with whey. I live in Australia and sometimes things are labelled differently.
@ThinkingandTinkering

Casein and whey have two different protein structures - both in milk
@justinw1765

Casein proteins are larger and much more gluey/sticky in nature than whey proteins.

hi mate_thanks for sharing your knowledge. just a question, i tried it out yesterday. i m not using a cloth 'cause i would like to get a thin layer of plastic just using casein, borax, water, glicerine and tannic acid. but, the result is drying now and it s full of cracks and it doesn t hold together. i follow your instructions, what could be wrong with it? thanks
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 9 жыл бұрын
Andrea Segato if it cracking you probably have too much solid in - but this is experimentation and casein is a natural product so will vary in quality greatly - you can only experiment to find out I am afraid

Apparently micellar casein is not exactly the same is calcium caseinate as it doesn't seem to dissolve in water alone. When I do this experiment I end up with a milky white substance that does eventually dry and get hard but doesn't that go clear. I'm going to substitute some of the water with paper certain percentage of ammonia solution and try and find the right spot to be at. It stays then too it doesn't get gloopy at all it stays perfectly thin so I don't know what's going on in there because it looks like it has a dissolved it all yet it does act like in its forms of film and sets up It claims to be pure casein and clean. I made an alkaline solution and then threw down the case and with a little acid and the water was clear clean. So I don't really know what the difference is other than it will not go clear at all without being in an alkaline solution a little stronger than you get from this recipe

+Clown Whisper it's food grade mate - so still full of fat which is what you are trying to get rid of
@ClownWhisper
@ClownWhisper 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Murray-Smith I ended up washing a blg batch of this my "big mistake" micellar casein in ethanol but the fats never truly came out untill i past ethyl ether through it while vacuum filtering it it is blindingly white now and rubbing a clump of it on glass leaves no traces of fats. I still want to find calcium caseinate for sale. this is too much work lol

Robert Murray-Smith LOL Could you please tell me the name of the company that makes the casein in this video? I'd like to write them and find out if they will ship to the States or perhaps they already distribute here I just can't find them. I have literally exhausted all leads for calcium caseinate. Even the ones on eBay are not unflavored. I'm so desperate that I'm about ready to buy a small amount of flavored calcium caseinate this to see if it works

Should our farm industry looking to take their product to the chemical industry to improve on their farm gate price,rather than the super market/dairy conglomerates.Should we be looking more closely and considering this as a green plastics alternative,considering the embedded methane.Borax,good for the hands?
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 9 жыл бұрын
absolutely we should be looking at this - we are chucking this stuff down the drain at the moment - British milk farmers are going out of business and here we are right in the middle of a search for alternative plastics - and what do we do? throw it away - it's madness - i started thinking about this when i was watching news reports on the state of British dairy farming and wondered what could be done
