I went with the 3wp. Exact same model. Easy to unlock, waterproof, 8 watts of power gmrs, 7 watts 2 meter

UV-9R Plus is my daily use radio. Is a tough radio and cheap.

Last summer I bought a set of Baofeng GMRS-9R for my kids while we went on a camping road trip. Very similar to the UV 9G. They worked great, but we didn't really lose line of sight, even when they were a couple miles away. Joys of Wyoming plains. If they can stand up to a group of kids abusing them for a summer, they are pretty tough.

Yeah, a group of kids near mountains also! This one seems to be really solid. It's 10x more strong than 5r, 5g, 5rh and 5g Plus. I'm gonna beat it up for sure to see and do a review again. Drop in saltwater, drop out of the boat onto concrete at the boat ramp, etc...!

One of the first radios I bought for CERT/SAR was the GT3WP. I guess you could call that the 9G's grandaddy. It is a great radio and batteries are easy to find. I heard a lot of horror stories about the 9G so I never bought one. It's good to see they fixed the issues, I may add one to my "keeping it legal" collection. They ARE waterproof, I can attest to that 😉 Thanks for the vid! This is going on my list.

As a Ham 🐷, I have the UV-9R Plus 2 Meter / 440 Mhz model, Radio (which is the original of the GMRS version!). They are Very durable, and Yes, they are Waterproof! No, it does NOT TX on 8 Watts as advertised, but closer to 5 Watts on High Power! I have dropped them (accidentaly) onto my concrete patio, because that damn Cheesy swivel belt clip, has an Unlock Spot! 🤬 With No damage! (I replaced my swivel post, with a cell phone swivel post. Which works... until it breaks! (Cheep Chinese Amazon Crap! 🤬 It needs to be Aluminum!) These radios are GREAT!...Waterproof & Beaters! I have taken one apart, and they have O-Rings around the Knob, Antenna, the Case, and where the Battery connects to the radio! My 3 Grandsons have NOT destroyed one Yet! So far! ... 😬 The display is a Gray'd Pixel, LCD, but you can see it in bright day light. Plus it has a programable 3 color back light. But, you can kinda see the display screen in the Day Light! (I have a different radio, w/ a color display that does not show up hardly at all, in bright day light!) Even the OEM antenna is good for VHF & UHF! (Can't speak on GMRS!) But the super long, after market antenna doesn't do well? The Shorter ones do better! I like & trust this model so much, I now own 4 of them! Mainly because it costs just a few dollars more to buy a New radio package, as it does to buy a spare battery! But, also because I like them so much. We have a pool, and I don't worry about dropping one of these in it, while working around the pool! These are as close to commercial grade radios, as I have seen, since using Motorola, Police radios, in my youth!

Does it scan tones?

Actually I don't believe it does because it's the same internals as a normal Baofeng. I don't have it with me at the moment, but it is the same menu as the UV5R and I don't think the 5R scans tones. But the ruggedness and IP67 makes up the difference.
