@13tcc That's a tough one. Both have same size battery and same antenna connection. Easy to upgrade. Both have Easy to read screens in daylight. You choose from this: Tidradio H3: 199 channels Tiny radio, tiny buttons TX Rx HAM and GMRS Rx CB band These are the advantages of the H3 over the GM-30 Plus. Only you can decide what's best for your needs. Tidradio had a bad reputation in the beginning because their radios had major problems. They seem to have worked it out. Radioddity is a solid more established company that deals with a higher quality radio. There's too many features to list here, but with the low prices, maybe you can get both over a month and try each one out. It's always best to have a back up radio, and it's always best to have a radio that will transmit HAM and GMRS just in case you need it.

@redacted2763 We all know where you're coming from, but you can't expect perfection in a mass-produced foreign radio that costs $36.99. I have $200 Wouxuns and a Kenwood for my fire dept, and obviously, those don't have issues. It's because, sadly, we all get what we pay for. The good thing is that the misspelled Poger Beep and the elevation issue were the only problems. Radioddity told me they are working it all out in firmware updates. I don't know if you had the early model Tidradio H8 and H3, but some of those were nightmares! I had my fair share of bad radios with them, but they are all worked out now. On this channel, I will do field tests with my good radios sometimes, but mostly, it's for beginners getting started. These Chinese companies disappoint people when they don't run their radios at least 5.5 to 5.7 watts. They are all the same. I would rather pay a little more for a radio that will do 2 watts on low / 4 watts on medium and 6 watts on high. To give you the simple answer, let's say this: Your family and my family go camping to the same campground with lots of hiking. You and I wanna take off and explore and the wives want to stay back and do whatever. The GPS only works with the radios that are linked together. So, we set one radio to have an ID of "Cool Radio" and the wives' is named "booooring". When they are linked together, and "allow" each radio to monitor the other, they wives can track where we are, if we get lost. That's the simple way to explain it. It's not a wide open GPS like you would think, so only the radios that you allow are able to see your position. It's great for hikers and things like that. However, the only way it would set a "home" position is if you left a radio at your camper with GPS on. That way, you could see where it is, what direction, and how far back to "that radio", which would get you un-lost. Hope that makes sense.

Pro tip: If you're someone like me who swaps antennas out as much as most people change their underwear, look at getting BNC adapters for your radios. SMA connectors are good for about 500 cycles before they're smoked......and I've seen some last WAY fewer cycles than that. The nice thing about running BNC adapters on everything and then buying BNC antennas is that all of your antennas will fit all of your radios, regardless of manufacturer or stock antenna connector. When the BNC adapter wears out, replace it and you're good to go again. I even have a BNC mag mount I got from Signal Stuff. Pop the mount on the roof of your vehicle, attach your antenna of choice on the mount, hook the coax (which is also BNC) to your radio, and POOF....you're mobile....and a car makes a GREAT ground plane LOL. @@LarryL619 Yes, Signal Stick is huge in the community. He runs a HAM prep service for getting licensed, and he is an actual radio operator. Signal strength that close to transmitter is meaningless. The signal strength meter is usefull in plotting the radiation pattern of the antenna vertically and horizontally for a directional antenna. You need to use something like a spectrum analyzer to get actual db readings of signal strength at a distance. Most radios do not have a sensitive calibrated signal strength meter to definetively sort signals on receive. Try testing antennas at different heights above and below the meter and at different angles to vertical to see if you get different results. Also increase the distance to the meter so weakest antenna gives 1 percent reading. Or measure actual distance to meter for each antenna to give same reading such as 5 or ten, 40 to 50 is too close.
@FirstUnitedTactical
@FirstUnitedTactical 6 күн бұрын
@mtu-engineer3220 That makes sense. I bought an analyzer but couldn't understand how it worked. Watched lots of videos, but they were all too advanced for a beginner trying to learn that technology. With the Field Strength Meter, I was trying to show equal distance and the "power" it received. So that's not the correct way to show how much signal actually leaves the antenna? I'm glad you wrote because I'm actually going to do a mobile antenna test today and was going to set the Meter about 10' away. My plan was to measure all antennas (off camera) and set the best antenna to 100 on Meter. Then, show the other antenna readings as they went down in Strength. You suggest taking the weakest antenna, setting the dial to 1%, then showing the other antennas as they get stronger? Is there a difference in starting at 1 compared to starting at 100 and working backward/weaker? The antennas will be mounted to my current set up on my truck, and the Meter "was going to be" about 10' away, at the same height as the antenna mount. I was going to do that to keep it as equal and horizontal as possible to show the "cleanest" transmission. I appreciate your knowledge!
@mtu-engineer3220
@mtu-engineer3220 6 күн бұрын
@@FirstUnitedTactical Radiation pattern of vertical antenna looks like eliptical donut in 3D. Spectrum analyzer gives peaks in db as you scroll the trace over the peak. you can scan a narrow band of frequencys on either sid of the frequency you are looking at to get greatest accuracy. Using signal strength meter to test distance you want to be far away to fall in the peak of the radiation lobe. The closer to the transmitter the easier it is to fall into the slope of eliptical lobe. High gain antennas have very pronounced elipses. 1/4 wave antenna is closer to perfect circle radiating up and down as well as sideways. That is why they work better in hilly terrain and when bad users tilt the antenna sideways rather than vertical. Setting the distance so the weakest antenna just registers on the meter will give you best results for sorting out true distance results. The other thing to keep in mind is running all tests at same battery voltage to keep output power equal. Radio power can drop off dramatically on some transmitters as voltage fluctuates.
@FirstUnitedTactical
@FirstUnitedTactical 6 күн бұрын
@mtu-engineer3220 I understand what you mean about the lobbing and elliptical donut reference. The video I will be doing today is just introducing the 6 or 7 antennas, and showing the field strength meter. It's way to difficult to do a field test 10 miles away with mobile. My 2 short ones will make 10 miles easily, but, when I swap to the 32" 6db gains, they will be over powering and can't tell a difference in "quality " at that distance. I would need to go out 20 miles for each of them to start dropping off. It's a lit more difficult with mobile compared to HT. I've already tried it for the past 3 weekends, and I'm not happy with results and distance. I will be just comparing 2 antennas with each other over the next 4 or 5 videos. But,, today's video, I will be introducing them all for a series of videos on Mobile.

@@FirstUnitedTactical The 6db antennas have the flatest lobes and do not work well in hilly terrain. Once you get past 5 miles you have to start looking at curvature of earth. @FirstUnitedTactical
@FirstUnitedTactical 6 күн бұрын
@@mtu-engineer3220 I have not looked at topo maps because we are in flat farm land. Very small rolling hills between testing spot (8 miles away) and the base antenna. When I say small rolling hills, I am talking about 20' tall max from normal ground level. Also, my house sits in a hole, so the 30' tall base antenna I have is basically a flat horizontal plane with the testing area. So today I went out there to the normal spot I go to for HT antenna testing. I took all the mobile antennas and not one reached back to the repeater at my house. Very odd. I actually believe something is wrong with the Btech 50v2 now... It's a good thing I have a TYT9800 as my base radio and I can swap it in my truck. But.... I also took 4 HT's with stock antennas and my new Signal Stick 2/70. When I got to the spot, I first did a trial run with a GMRS H8 with stock 440 antenna. No luck, so, I put the signal stick on and it made it, but extreme static. I knew from that point it would be a useless day for testing due to bad atmosphere. (It's very hazy here, where normally it's clear blue skies). But, that doesn't explain why a 50w radio with a good coax and good antenna doesn't reach. The only explanation is a bad radio. It receives just fine, but I rarely talk so I've never paid attention. Have you seen my other HT testing videos? A lot of the time the Nagoya 771g really does well, even at 8 miles, where others just fall off and not make the distance.

If it doesn't, I choose the option "Help me find it". It will tell me to unplug, then press ok. Then plug in and press ok. It will then set the port setting correctly. That should fix your issue, if it's the same as I always have...

@@joeashbrook5736 I am firm believer in the H3 and I can go ahead and tell you that the best short antenna for it is the Smiley 5/8 Slim Duck 465 amzn.to/3LVcS7P and the best long antenna is the Nagoya 771g amzn.to/4cb6jc0 or the Diamond amzn.to/3A0ILcv The main difference in the Nagoya 771g and the Diamond is the Nagoya is a GMRS specifically tuned antenna and the Diamond is a dual band. This part is up to you: The Nagoya will talk better on GMRS, but you have more options on frequencies if you ever need to talk on HAM or 2m/70cm and GMRS. They are both excellent and the Smiley 5/8 Slim Duck is fantastic. In one of my videos (may be this one, I don't remember) the Signal Stuff 440 performed excellent and better than the Smiley. I can tell you from experience that was not normal. The smiley always performed better and I have one on all of my daily radios. I keep a long one (771) in my truck in case I need to get out in the country and need to receive better. All three of these will transmit equally, but the longer ones will receive more because there is obviously more antenna sticking up in the air to grab the signal. I hope this helps, for now!

I just got my set of TIDRadio TD-H3's a couple days ago and have been playing with them with the stock antennas... and I'm thoroughly impressed with these tiny radios. I WISH they came with the GMRS 771 antennas, but mine was packaged with TD-771 antennas tuned for 120/300MHz. Kinda useless, unless you really want to listen to air band. The short antennas that came with my radios are also different than what you have, they say in the base that they are tuned for 400-480MHz. They seemed to perform ok...

I have talked to them, and they informed me that the db50 is just like it, dual band, but it pushes 40w on GMRS and UHF. I will be buying that one because 15W difference is a huge deal. I love my tyt, because it does 10m, and the db50 does not, so I will definately keep the tyt as a home base and the db50 will replace my truck radio, BTECH 50v2... How does this compare to the UV-17R Plus?
@FirstUnitedTactical
@FirstUnitedTactical 22 күн бұрын
All of the Baofengs (except my 5RH) will compare very similar on transmit and receive. This video is a GRMS only radio, and the 17R Pro is a Dual Band (UHF/VHF), but I'm sure can also be unlocked to run GMRS. The 17R Pro has GPS (with other Baofeng users), which is pretty cool. The 5G Pro is a simple, very compact radio, that performs very well. It really depends on what your needs are. I've had a BTECH GMRS Pro with GPS, but it doesn't matter unless all of you have have it and are all out hiking or camping seperate from each other. If you don't do things like that, GPS doesn't matter. The size of the 17R Pro is larger though. To give you a quick summary, the 17R is a HAM radio and this 5G Pro is a GMRS radio. Both will receive a large number of frequencies and talk very well. But, the 17R is able to transmit on 2m/70cm bands, IF you have a HAM license....

Can it transmit 5w on GMRS?
@FirstUnitedTactical
@FirstUnitedTactical 24 күн бұрын
@jamesmcfarland2636 Oh yes. When you get a higher quality radio it actually sends more of the 5w onto the frequency you are transmitting on. Some of the lower quality radios send out 5w, but it may only be 3w on the desired frequency, and 1w on the two frequencies upper and lower. For example: a lower quality radio "may" send out 3w on 462.625, and 1w on 462.600 and 1w on 462.650. If the receiving radio is on 462.625, they may only hear 3w of your tranmission. With a higher quality radio, like Wouxun, Midland, etc..., you are sending out more of a solid wattage on that particular channel. You get what you pay for, and it receives a better signal as well. Hope that makes sense.

@jamesmcfarland2636 go to Google and type in gmrs Wattage chart. FRS and GMRS share the same frequencies. The only difference is the wattage allowed when using them. FRS is like the camping walkie talkies you buy for $29 pair. GMRS radios are more powerful, and also able to talk on repeaters to be able to reach 50 miles or so in transmitting. You don't need a license for FRS, but you do need one for GMRS.

@FirstUnitedTactical
@FirstUnitedTactical 24 күн бұрын
@jamesmcfarland2636 The Wouxun KG-UV9GX is a true GMRS radio. The main "way" it is a gmrs radio is because it is "repeater capable". FRS radios are not repeater capable, and they are capped off at 2w I believe. Anytime you see a radio that says channels 1-22 and repeater channels 23-30, you know it's a true GMRS radio. It's easy to get a license to transmit through the FCC, and it's good for 10 years, plus good for your entire family. No test, just credit card to FCC for $35 and your good in about 24 hours. I will look up the repeaters in your area. What city and state are you in?

Another option would be a solar generator. Most of them have a 24 volt lithium ion phosphate battery with a regulated 13.8 volt power outlet and inverter. Most can function as a UPS and of course offer solar charging capability. Which may not be that big a deal in a hurricane when there’s no sun. You basically choose what size inverter you want. The one I’ve seen has a 2400 watt inverter witha 2400 watt hour battery. So when you’re using the 13.8 V power outlet it is direct DC. The inverter can be utilized or left turned off.

@Novoworks You need a 110 switching supply to provide 13.8+ volts required by the radio. You can receive all day long with the normal 12v, but it won't transmit properly. That would be easy, but it requires more power that a 12v supply. I used to think the exact same thing until I actually did it without the BTECH supply, and it wouldn't even key up.
