Complete step by step installation of a waterproof shower stall using Laticrete Hydro Ban Board with their bonding flange and all the other components to create a totally waterproof shower. If you are building a shower, then you need to waterproof it. Just putting up a cement board and then tiling it without applying some kind of waterproofing, will lead to a failure. There are many ways to waterproof a shower, the tile is not going to stop water from entering your wall cavity, or going through the floor, waterproofing needs to be done. Here I demonstrate two ways of sealing the seams, corners and floor, of the shower. The Hydro Ban Liquid applied membrane makes for a fast and easy installation that is suitable for a standard shower. Substitute the liquid hydro Ban with thinset and membrane ,and banding to be suitable for a steam shower. Laticrete Hydro Ban Board is made of a lightweight waterproof high-density extruded polystyrene core , and has a reinforced, waterproof membrane on both sides. All three layers of the board are waterproof. In This video I use the 1/2" version but is also available in 1/4” , 3/8” , 1/2”, 5/8”, 1", 1 ½” and 2" This is what is referred to a a sealed system, and is in my opinion far superior to a traditional "water in water out" system with a vinyl liner.Waterproofing a shower is something that must be done, Laticrete has a great system to do just that.

it's interesting to see how you progress with methods over the years. for example you didn't burn the thinset with the flat side of trowel before applying the sheet membrane at floor, you went straight to the notch side. more recent videos now recommend burning the thinset with the flat side which gives way more bond strength per your comment. i am always trying to improve myself and it's good to see real life examples. thanks Sal

Hi Sal, why did you want the Hydro Ban flange 1.5 inches off the subfloor in this installation? In other words, how did you come to this specific height? Does this height have anything to do with the perimeter mud height or is the height of the flange unrelated to the perimeter mud height?

Sal, thanks very much for all your videos. As a homeowner, I've used Hydro Ban and Barrier and really love it. However, I am doing my first mud shower pan in my house and I feel a little more comfortable using the sheet membrane like you did in this video - just because I don't trust myself with perfectly even coverage of the liquid over the raw mud bed. My question is if I could also apply the liquid just to the edge of the seams of the finished sheet membrane. The only thing I don't like about the sheet membrane is having the thinset (Laticrete 254 platinum) exposed to water where the seams end. I thought it would be good to apply some liquid afterwards just to those edges to make sure water never gets under the membrane. What do you think? Thanks again!

Hey Sal, do you always do a mud base or do you ever use the preformed schluter pan? Any reason why you generally do mud?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 3 жыл бұрын
Usually mud, it is cheaper, you don't need to figure out and order the right size, it doesn't matter where the drain is and what shape the sower is or how big it is. Trays are great if you can drop them right in, but that is rarely the case. Subfloor has to be level, that is rarely the case. So by the time you fix your subfloor, modify your tray to make it fit the shape and match the drain location, I will be done with my mud.

I have a question? Could I just do hydroban sheets for pan liner and durock for the walls? Obviously I would have to paint the durock preferably with hydrobab membrane. Ive never seen it done but I don't see why one couldn't?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 3 жыл бұрын
Here is what I think, if you are building a shower you want that shower to never leak and cause rot, mold and mildew, so you never try to save on the one thing that is critical to ensuring that the shower will be water tight. So you could do it the way you want, but be absolutely sure to apply the Hydro Ban, or whatever liquid applied waterproofing membrane you intend to use, to the correct mil thickness, the correct number of coats and follow all manufacturer recommendations. You can not afford to have any holes in the membrane, can't be too thin in any one spot, can't have any globs that will never dry, and the cement board has to be installed to meet the membrane manufacturers tolerances. Sheet membranes and foam boards are much more forgiving.

Hi sal, why did you put the corners and over lap ban down before the membrane on the floor pan? I would think those shol come last to help with overlapping in the same order as gravity would push water.

Order makes no difference, has to hold water, not shed it.

Great video, Sal. I know it may be overly redundant, but would you see any issue with putting two coats of hydroban over the top of the floor membrane before putting tile down just as added security? I know it would be overkill, but I was wondering if it may be worth it? Especially if you end up with some extra hydroban on hand at the end of the job.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 4 жыл бұрын
I would not do that, the sheet membrane is a much better waterproofing layer than any liquid applied.

Really super nice detailed video Sal. I've been wanting to move forward with the new materials and installs. I just wanted to see what was involved. What I like about his set up is I can use this on concrete floors as well. I live in Florida and all I've been doing is vinyl pans. I install a pre slope before the vinyl. But I also use the goof proof self pitch system. I can't remember the name of the product. But the final pitch is a bit to steep for my liking. I really like the fact that you don't to do this here. And no pre slope because you you make it yourself with the mortar. Thanks for video. Pete.
