This is a scene from a movie called "Twist Around the Clock" and he's performing at a dinner club. The crowd has a lot of older (in the 60s, if you were over 30, you probably already had a house and kids and you were old) wealthy people. This kind of music was mostly "teen" music back then. Also, upper class people didn't let themselves get too excited in public back then. Good manners meant politely listening and clapping. Performers knew that at those kinds of places, they were going to get smiles and not much more. The smiles the end and the clapping meant they really enjoyed the performance. Even if teens were out with their parents, especially wealthy ones, they would have been expected to "behave" in public and not act crazy.
@rebeccalipps23
@rebeccalipps23 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. People (teens) didn't start to act nutty until The Beatles came along in early 1964. It was considered rude to interject enthusiasm into the performance. Additionally, there was no "hype" person to get the audience involved. American audiences still don't participate like European audiences.

@@jokes881 Yes, true. But they "acted" like this in the movie because that is how people DID act in dinner clubs. My grandmother told me stories about going to see the four seasons in a dinner club in the 1960's and that was what people did. You sat there and clapped at the end because if you acted out and clapped and got up or screamed, it was actually considered rude to the artist.

I graduated in 63 so this was my music. The reason they weren't really reacting part of it was cuz it's a movie but also at that time this type of music was completely foreign to anybody over 18 and the older people thought it was the devil's music & it was horrible they hated it. I can remember my parents just absolutely having conniption fits about the music, didn't stop me from listening to it though & loving it

Hey, Adogg! A number of people spotted that the performance comes from a movie, and Bryan Ceja nails the title in his comment. He's also correct about how people behaved in THOSE days. I grew up as a subteen and teenager during those years. Only younger people were breaking out of sitting still and quiet for a performance, and they only did so when in a large crowd with other highly histrionic teens. (Think, notably, Elvis.) Believe me, many parents were not pleased with this behavior. In a "high class" night club, you remained dignified, composed, and "well mannered." As Bryan said, the audience indicated their pleasure by enthusiastic applause.

True story growing up we went skiing every weekend. We lived 2 hours from the resort but had several other families we all went out to a restaurant / bar. When we first starting going there Saturday nights everyone sat around listening to the jukebox. But my dad loved to dance and was GOOD! Mom didn't ... one of the other ladies did and her husband didn't ... no one was threatened when dad asked her if she wanted to dance. From there it became history, we would all have dinner, kids got to play pinball and eventually a song like this or Jim Croce's Bad Bad Leroy Brown would come on the jukebox ... dad would dance for hours with many of the ladies. The men were happy because they didn't have to. A couple of his dance partners were pretty good and eventually certain songs were for certain partners. They would get applause ... but until the right songs came on the people sat around like statues. I miss him and the way life was with those friends. As adults all of us kids went our separate ways. Hardly any contact, but it always seems to be around the holidays we manage to touch base and remember when. What you witnessed was how things were in the early 60s and continued for some time when adults were out to dinner. There might be dancing (waltz and other slower tunes after dinner, and between singing performers) but audiences had to show proper decorum .... they were stiff or uptight about a lot back then.

Many mid-1950s to mid-1960s movies, esp. movies filmed in black & white, had song performances viewed by super uptight crowds to where, in those days, it was polite to sit quuetly, be tight azz & listen to a song. What u know as modern music concerts, w ppl dancing, only happened at black music clubs (basement parties or house parties) till as late as 1964 or 1965 when modern music concerts went fully mainstream.

Probably like 1960 or 1961? Yeah, this whole video is like a slice in time from a completely different era. Rock and roll was VERY new and even how people responded to music and where it was played was very different. Rock and roll really started gaining popularity around 1955 or so with Elvis and Chuck Berry, but with teens. Only teens maybe screamed and danced and acted up back then to good music. So that is like the equivalent of a brand new genre of music to us being invented in 2018! People did not go to "concerts" like today. Music was performed for money in restaurants where they would have live music, comedians or a show. So older people tended to go to them because they were they only ones that could afford to. And anyone not a teen just did not yell and clap during a song because it was actually thought of as rude to a performer. (Kind of like you cannot clap at classical music until it ends) So people would actually sit there and maybe smile, but then clap at the end. It was the way it was from the big band era of the 1930's until maybe like 1964. Hollywood movies were (and still kind of are) like five years behind the times as to how people act, so Dion was in this movie where the makers of the movie really only knew what they knew from before, which is kind of the dinner and show type of venue for any musician. One of the reasons that whole dinner and a show thing died out was modern music does not fit the old big band venue as people do scream and clap and musicians became so big they could actually fill whole concert venues of people just going to see them and dance or scream and hop around. After 1964 and the Beatles, older people were kind of clued in (and Hollywood) that with pop acts like Dion, everyone should be swaying, screaming and going nuts because they saw how teen girls lost their minds on national TV with the Beatles.

This is a GREAT song from the 60s! Hearing this song always reminds me of a movie from the 90s tho, because it was part of the soundtrack. You gotta watch the movie Little Big League! It's about a teenager that is the grandson of the owner of the Minnesota Twins MLB team. Grandpa dies and leaves the team to his grandson to own. Fun family movie! If you've never seen it, I hope you watch it and enjoy it! As always, love the content Adogg!

Try "The Wanderer" next, please ... it's kind the same story, but twisted! Like: She is "running around", but he is "wandering around" ;-) Dion was a BA! ^+gg

You can appreciate how much less of squares society is 50+ years later. Not saying we can't get a whole lot more free with ourselves, still. STILL waiting on people to be dacing in the streets. I think they do in some middle eastern & african countries. But that's because they just never lost it in the first place.
