wattpad's after franchise is falling apart and it's MESSY
Hey everyone welcome back to my channel! It’s been a minute since we’ve done a movie commentary video, i think the last one we did was for Addison Rae’s He’s All That Netflix movie but if you’ve been around on the channel for a while you know that the fall season includes a very niche tradition around here… watching the latest installment of the after franchise! If you need a refresher, the After movies are based on harry styles fanfiction written by Anna Todd that initially gained traction on Wattpad before eventually being published as an actual book series and adapted into movies.
To say the movies got off to a rocky start is an understatement, since they’ve been released the After franchise has been looked at as a bit of a cringey mess due to its origin as wattpad fanfiction considering the platform's.... interesting reputation online. On top of that the plot and acting were.. also interesting. Despite that though, After fans have been very vocal about their trust in the series eventually getting good, but I was pretty shocked to see this year that barely anybody was talking about the latest movie, not even the fans. That's not to say nobody was talking about it at all, but the buzz around the franchise both negative and positive has definitely seen a dramatic decrease. What's also interesting is that a pretty sizable number of actors from the previous movies have been replaced despite there only being two more movies left to film.
Speaking of movies left to film, while the new addition to the series is called After We Fell and acts as the third movie in whats i thOUGHT was a three-movie series, it actually turns out that there will be yet another movie before this story finally ends.... lmao (not including the prequel one). SO I thought we could check it out the same way we have with the previous movies and see what Tessa and Hardin get up to in that hour and a half runtime! I'm anticipating an unhinged nightmare.
If you've seen the movie definitely let me know what you thought of it but if you enjoyed the video feel free to give it a like and subscribe to the channel it really helps me out :) but otherwise I hope you guys enjoy and I’ll see you in the comments!!

but I feel like as disturbing as it is it is also kinda iconic. The whole situation is so damn messy and low key problematic (talking abut the tropes the book perpetuates) but it also it goes to show his impact in and on popular culture. And from this viewpoint it doesnt matter how messy those books and films are. Harry has a good public image and I feel like everybody that knows the connection between him and the after series is sort of on his side so I dont think he has to necesarrily worry about all this and how he may be percieved bc of those books/movies. Part of me wants these movies to go the route of the divergent franchise where we don't get the last movie (or in this case movies) because it's just so bad and the relationship is super toxic. But on the same hand I don't want these movies to go because they're like a train wreck I can't look away from and also the cringe funny moments. I'm at that at a 50/50 and don't plan to read the books, which is sad because generally if a book is adapted then I'm usually so hype to read something.

Sure, don't put explicit books in schools where it's not age appropriate, but kids and teens deserve access to all types of books. One of my favorite things my library would do is have Banned Books Month where my librarian encouraged us to read as many previously banned books as possible that were on our shelves, were encouraged to seek out ones that were currently still banned, and to learn about why they were banned

Omg yes! now THAT is an excellent example of a toxic relationship done well. Mostly because it’s more self aware than After. I am an aspiring writer and am trying to use the famous argument scene as inspiration for some of my characters. But sadly I haven’t brought myself to watch it in its entirety because some stuff hits way too close to home as a child of divorce. Meanwhile I feel nothing for Tessa and her family cuz they’re all poorly written characters 😂 I wish more YA media would just lean into the toxicity element because it’s always more insightful and compelling to watch, especially if it’s written in a self aware manner

I take issue with a film partially set in London, staring actors playing British characters using the word "freshman". That's an Americanism. We say "first year" over here, and use "college" exclusively to refer to Further Education Colleges... where people do vocational qualifications from and an alternative venue to the optional last 2 years of high school. It's a lower level of education than uni (which is Higher Education). I went to college *and then* I went to uni. She's not a freshmen in a college, she's a first year student in a university. To me the word "college" implies that someone is probably about 16 and doesn't have the qualifications to go to uni. Or doesn't want to go to uni at all.
