After taking a week off last week, I'm back!
Last week I put out a poll to ask you guys what you wanted to see next:
1. Wax Carving tutorial
2. Do's and don'ts of Instagram
3. Day in the life vlog style video
It was a very close call between 1 and 2, with the winner being wax carving! So here I am with a beginner wax carving video where I teach you how to make a ring. There are obviously many more techniques that I didn't cover here, but maybe I'll do another one another time if you guys like.
I have linked some tools below if you are interested. Some are from a shop in the UK though, sorry fellow international friends, but it's important to get good quality files as otherwise they just don't work so well. So I'd recommend you look around and avoid the al'cheapo's.
As always,
Lots of love,
Megan

Hi! Just wanted to stick my nose in and suggest that a designer can also take a fully finished fabricated (in metal, minus stone/s) piece, and also have that molded, then cast accordingly. It keeps the whole wax step out of it. Nice to do, when one has a really great design result, and then decides that they'd like to have more of that piece. A nice addition to options. Loving your videos, they are not pretentious; how refreshing!

Modelling wax is my favourite material to work with, ever since my first jewelry course. And it was the first thing I bought to start working with. Thank you for this video

Hiya Megan, a couple of tips for wax; using sandpaper, use the type that is a net, Bosch make a good variety of them. The cut off wax goes in the void and drops through so the paper is not clogged up. I got some on Amazon using the Bosch name. To polish the wax use a pencil eraser, the ones that are wedge-shaped and go on the end of a pencil work best I'm told. Stay safe, Steve...

Hiya again Megan, just re-watched as I always do, it's amazing how much new stuff I see re-watching. Anyway, to do the grove, if you run along the centre line with the edge of your 3 square file, making a shallow 'v' trench you can then open this up with the round file. Doing it this way is good for getting the grove around the middle of the band, or where ever. It allows greater accuracy than going straight for the round file. You can use the technique for dimples around the edge or for where ever you want. Stay safe, Steve...

Great tutorial! I've watched a few on wax, but they've never explained it so clearly for someone brand new to the method. Is your caster (sp?) in the EU? Looking forward to part 2!

Thank you for a lovely video! If you want to make the same ring in different sizes, do you make a wax mould for each size?
@megan.collins
@megan.collins 2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Yes that is one option and a good option if you are planning on selling lots. But if you just want one or two different sizes you can also just cast them in the same size as the original and stretch them up or cut them open and add a bit in or cut a bit out and solder it back. But obviously this also depends on the complexity of the ring and if this is easily possible. I'd recommend asking the caster what they think would be best.

Hi, Megan! Love your videos and your beautiful jewelry. I will be trying to use wax carving technique for the first time soon as well. I wanted to ask you a tip; what do you do with the ”blue snow” or shaving rest after finishing your project? Do you just throw it away or is it possible to reuse it? Thanks 💕
@megan.collins
@megan.collins 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivana, yay! Thank you! How exciting! Enjoy it! I love working with wax! I just throw it away as it's always full of dirt and so I personally wouldn't risk reusing it. If your piece breaks though you can melt some of it and use that to fix your piece again. If you are in IG feel free to tag me, @megancollins.co I'd love to see what you make 🤗

Tho Megan…You can get fluid organic shapes from metal. It just takes files. Just found you a am going to follow. I get how you’re doing your whole KZfaq thing and changing your life much respect for that but I will not watch jewelry making that has music in the background! part of showing “how to” make something is using the voice of the human showing “how to”. If people don’t need a voice when they showed “how to make or “how I make”, which is the equivalent of teaching…teachers wouldn’t have to speak. Your choice of music is not mine. it’s a turn off. Also All this contrived Martha Stewart video footage If you heating up your milk for coffee and reaching for a spoon and things like that, for me isn’t necessary it’s pushing the envelope, gilding the Lily. Trying too hard. You talk in your videos about letting people get to know you. I don’t know who you are when all I see is your body moving but hearing someone else’s music. I do appreciate the effort though and some of it as well done, some of it is cheesy. I appreciate your Instagram information I did hear that one. and I want to learn from you. somethings. somethings I don’t know what’s happening. Today my mother-in-law died I don’t want to hear sad piano music that I hear it in your wax carving video. it made me well up. I don’t need that. your voice is soothing not the music.

I'm so sorry for your loss! That is not easy! I lost my father a few years ago and it takes time to heal. I'm sorry that the music in the video was triggering for you. My heart goes out to you in this time. Take care.
