I learned of Tory Slusher from the simple suggestion by one of my subscribers. Upon hearing her improvise I was gobsmacked. Tory uses both hands on the fretboard, but her playing goes way beyond "just tapping" on the guitar Tory is an incredible improviser that doesn't base her playing on tricks or licks that appear in solo after solo. Instead, she actually improvises and takes chances. Her playing transcends the technique and her lines are as unpredictable as her whit.
I swore that I was never going to do another interview and here I am.... Doing another interview! I hope you enjoyed this and please do check out her channel. I Look forward to the day when she puts together a two-handed tapping technique book, or two handed tapping course for guitar.

I once had a teacher tell me that the only way to achieve greatness is to commit to a single guiding principle: One Pointedness. Tory Slusher made up her mind at a very early age to make mastery of music and the guitar her lifelong ambition. She has successfully taken the guitar to new heights heretofore not seen in any genre of guitar playing in the history of the instrument.

I agree 100%! Her playing is a massive advance that will wildly open minds as to what is possible for guitar players! She's inspired by Stanley Jordan, but I think she's moved light years beyond him; as great as he is. He really sticks to pretty standard jazz vocabulary and doesn't seem to stray outside of it, except that he plays chords with the left hand and lines with the right; but the lines and chords themselves are nothing special or particularly modern sounding.

Thanks for this! As someone who only recently "discovered" Tory on social media, it amazes me how few "followers" she has, and how relatively obscure of a performer she is, in relation to her virtuosity. I find myself searching YT for her posts, and this is the only interview of Tory that I've found that she didn't conduct on herself. Very informative!

I use the word "genius" about very few living musicians. I have used it about Tory a lot. It's not just her playing, per se, but about the limitless creativity, and now, even more than in her clips, her erudition. And, humor (whether intentional or not): cue 37:31 to 37:45!

Tory’s genius comes from my impression the fact she plays extreme exotic scales with her right hand only. Sounds more musical right hand tapping(playing scales)than advanced metal guitar tutorials. I seen a guy on instagram play same scales orthodox playing. But Tory plays this exotic scale with her guitar in her lap tapping notes without pick?

Exactly I watched Tory’s video on adapting her right hand tapping. I watch three times, but found no explanation. She mentions resistance training she read from piano composer, (the piano he practiced on was hard to play. Playing a concert, pianos provided on stage made playing easy) received standing ovations. But she doesn’t really show resistant training exercises) I mean what did she practice after Van Halen tapping.

I totally understand what Tory means about not playing "licks". I've done the same and to me music is a living language. Playing licks is akin to talking in statements in speech. It's not a natural flowing way to speak, and the same applies to playing musical licks and phrases. It's IMHO not a sincere and creative way to think and play or talk. A good melody is often a longer form that winds and weaves in a natural way, just like a good conversation would do.

42:40 good point! When Wes played Bop in the Montgomery Brothers, I really got the idea he may have actually played Mariba or vibes and was booted from the intrument because he was the youngest brother, and they already had a marimba player. Naturally he wanted to play octaves and chords like those intruments . In combination with Jobim and sinatra cutting a Bossa Nova album guitar really came into it's own voice . Much like how Stevie Ray Vaughn brought fourth a voice in blues. It had been done before yet he could process albert King's coolest moves get the recipe and go farther

They want auto tuned strippers who sing over backing tracks… Pretty boys dressed up like cowboys singing about small towns, flags, daisy dukes, whiskey, and pickup trucks…..Metal bands with clown makeup…… Thats the sad truth…. Some artists and musicians need to be accepted just as they are and helped along. Appreciate an artist for their work and don't put them in a box expecting them to react in a particular way, and when they don't they get written off. I've noticed that in some of the comments (on her channel) where people either are being thin skinned, or have some unrealistic expectation they impose upon others to jump through their hoops and be someone they're not. At least that's what I wonder why she hasn't taken off and become a sensation at this point?

Tory is an incredible musician. Amazing. Several jazz greats were obsessive about musical study and exploration in the way that she is. One thing that makes her different from some of the jazz greats - and i will focus on pianists because she is most into polyphony, counterpoint, harmony, etc- is that they were social and gravitated Toward playing with other greats. So chick played with miles. Tyner played with coltrane. Herbie played with miles and wayne shorter. Bill evans played with miles. She really seems to want to explore and play music solo. I guess chopin mostly did that too. It would be cool to hear her jam with a drummer, bassist and horn player, but that doesn’t seem to be her thing. I would love to hear her live.

19:45, I can speak from experience. I've often travelled with my harmonica and holder in my carry on. Get pulled to the side because it's a weird looking metal object and of course they ask me to demonstrate, lol. It gets me checked nearly every single time, but they let me on.

Wouldn't you just love to hear a collaboration between Tory and Thundercat? And isn't it a damn shame that Oscar Peterson isn't alive to hear Tory?
