I enjoy these wonderful classics and the actors are as familiar (and more enjoyable) as some family members, but I am truly taken aback with the frequent theme of spousal ill treatment and verbal abuse on the part of both sexes. So much went completely over my head as a child. Thank you for making these available. It is fun to see Roald Dahl in the flesh.

21:23 -- He almost shouts, "Hi, Professor!" As if saying it louder, the professor will be able to hear him. This is so much fun! I'm glad they chose to keep it humorous, rather than trying to make it a serious thriller or horror story.

Saw this when it first aired! Love it! Great cast. One of Henry Jones’ best performances, I think. I recommend The Croaker about a man who turns people into frogs starring a very young Richard Thomas with John McGiver and Madeleine Sherwood. And False Face!! An actor about to play Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame hires a fellow with a grotesque face to be a model for his stage make-up. I think these Way Out episodes are all here on KZfaq! Lucky us!

Twilight Zone and One Step Beyond were ones I watched at the time. Saw the previews to this back in early 1961. Watched every Friday just before Twilight Zone. Outer Limits came out in late 1963, another favorite. Loved science fiction mystery.

"Don't consume pastries" - wow, what a total jerk! As if he thinks he has authority over his wife after his death! He's just being mean-spirited, and enjoys making her miserable; his remaining days as a disembodied brain are going to be a pure hell, even if he gets to remain in that lab.

Fritz Weaver, wonderful actor, has played Sherlock Holmes, I think, on several occasions..."Watson" was of course Holmes's friend, companion and chronicler, according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle..

25:13 -- "Watson, come in here. I need you." I was wondering whether naming the assistant Watson was intentional. Clearly, it was. Give a like if you recognize the allusion!

I'm four years late to this comment, but it's even more amusing knowing that the actor calling for Watson, Fritz Weaver, went on to play Sherlock on Broadway in a pretty decent musical run of Sherlock Holmes called "Baker Street". Perhaps that's what you were referring to as well!

The episode where a photographer could change a person’s looks by using a retouching fluid. Any idea what happened to that one? He tried to retouch his own photo to make himself look handsome and his wife’s photo to make her look like an old witch. He wound up spilling some fluid on his photo which obliterated half his face on the photo and his own face.

From the first scene I remembered the ending of cigarette smoke blown on the brain and that's about all. Roald Dahl's grim, sardonic tv series had quite an impact on me as a twelve year-old! But as an old person I prefer watching productions with at least hopeful if not happy endings. Twilight Zone has several of those. 🙂

Not the best written sci fi/fantasy/horror dramas, but A nice try. Only 14 were produced. They seem to have been shot on video tape and copied on kinescope! The program aired before the Twilight Zone on Friday nights in 1960. It was one of the last tv dramas shot in New York (if you don’t count soap operas). The host only wrote the first program (the one above). Blocking was in accordance with live tv. Each show had few sets. Some sets were very well done, others simple. The dialogue was written to be long as to cut back on production time. The ratings in cities were very good. Not so great in rural areas. The network, CBS, made a blunder (as they so often do), when they canceled the program. Unlike the Twilight Zone, these stories do not tend to resolve in the end. Nor, is there a Serling type twist ending. Still, if there had been a few seasons of this these shows would have been most welcome today as interesting and entertaining TV history.

I thought Roald DAHL hated televison?...
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 3 жыл бұрын
He loved MONEY more. He agreed to host this series because he was paid well- and he probably fancied himself another Hitchcock- or Serling......and they adapted one of his favorite stories as the first episode. Years later, he became involved in a similar anthology produced in England, and syndicated worldwide....with HIS name on it: "Roald Dahl's TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED".

"We've completed a number of successful trials with laboratory animals. I'm at the stage now where I'm ready to have a go with a man." Wow--even to talk about conventional sex so openly was very progressive for the time. "The only thing I want is that clean, beautiful, healthy brain." Kinkier and kinkier! The professor says, sounding like a coquettish tease, "I just might let you do this thing to me." At this the doctor grabs him warmly and firmly--almost passionately--by the shoulders and says, with real depth of feeling, "I knew you would!"

In the very beginning intro scene, the Dr. with Mildred Dunnock. Hughes is much younger, so the 'older guy' we all remember from the wonderful New Yorker voice over ads, and the Broadway play, "The Da", plus so many more later television shows, he looks different!
