To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
New York 1918 was originally planned as an 8-player double round robin tournament. Norman Tweed Whitaker began a game a day before Round 1, became ill and withdrew from the event, leaving it as a 7-player field.
ROUND 1 saw the most famous game of the tournament. Marshall sprung his prepared variation of what has come to be known as the Marshall Gambit, but Capablanca wove his way through the complications at the board to win the game. Kostic drew with Chajes. In ROUND 2, Marshall lost to Chajes, and Marshall was never able to overcome the bad 0-2 start and catch Capablanca and Kostic. Janowski lost to the eventual tail-ender, Morrison, and this was the beginning of a lackluster result for him. In ROUND 4, Marshall beat Janowski, but this was a bit too late to reverse his fortunes. Kostic beat Morrison, but drew five of his first six games. Despite going undefeated in the tournament, this would not be a sufficiently fast pace to catch Capablanca, who would score a blistering 10.5/12.

If f3, then bishop-takes-knight (the move our host did not notice), pawn-takes-rook, bishop-takes-pawn, forking king and rook. At the end of the exchange, a knight, a pawn, and a rook are trades for a bishop and a rook. The position is drawing thereafter.

Rxa2 2.Kxa2 cxd5 3.Bg1 Qa5+ 4.Kb2 Bg6 5.Bb6 Bxc2 6.Bxa5 Bxd1 7.Rxd1 gxf4 8.Rxd5 Be5

Capablanca just turned in his grave and shouted that Agadmators F3 move is bad, because black will not move his rock, black will capture the knight with his bishop. And when white capture the rock, then see that the bishop capture the pawn on e4 with check and a fork on whites rock. So in the end F3 would be to sacrifice another pawn and play into capablancas plan to exchange more material for a winning endgame.

@Eric Kolibacz If black plays D5 and white captures on G5, white will actually only have one pawn on the kingside as the other pawn was captured previously by the bishop at E4. However, in either variation, i.e, Black moves D5 immediately or captures at F4, white's prospects appear fairly good and certainly much better than in the game.

f3 looks like a very obvious in between move and I thought after Ra4 the rook was misplaced. And it was but only if you play it very precisely. In fact I would have improved the rook position probably not finding the best continuation.

To me I didn't consider f3 because I saw immediately after attacking the rook, you don't have to move just bishop takes knight in D5 and if pawn takes rook then bishop takes pawn with check connecting with the rook on h1,after moving the king, bishop takes rook, rook takes rook and after pawn takes pawn in f4, bishop takes on e4,it's equal position with white is better with safer king and have a f pass pawn, but I think with perfect play,it would result a draw except if capablanca makes a mistake but it's unlikely as he's good at endgames.

6:46 -- If you let the engine crunch for a *really* long time (like, depth 40), it eventually comes around to preferring the played Ne3 over f3, slightly, and both are only -0.3ish for Black. 9:53 -- After f3, aside from rook moves, Black also has the option of Bxd5 (and it is the reason why f3 isn't desirable from Black's perspective unless he's striving for a draw). --Now if White captures the rook, then bishop takes pawn, forking the White king and rook. (And so the king moves, bishop captures rook, other rook takes bishop, then Black plays g4 to acquire a passed pawn. After crunching the position to depth 24, the engine rates the position 0.00. 10:30 -- After Ne4, Qa5, White's best move is a3 (not c4, which is a horrible blunder). If a3, then the game heads to a 0.00 draw (thus why Ne4 was not worse than f3 as discussed above). With c4, we get Qxd2, Rxd2, gxf4 (threatening the knight, and all of this played in the game), and the Black position is sitting very pretty up about two and a half points. 11:31 -- Bf5 or Bh5 here (instead of the played Bf7) leads to some very enjoyable passed pawn jamming for Black: the attacked White knight has no retreat square, so f3 to defend, then Bxg4, fxg4, etc.

I don't get it. after f3, bxkn, pxr, bxp ch, king moves, bxr so you end with black trading rook & bishop for pawn, rook & knight

Hi agadmator, I enjoy your videos from the start. I really appreciate your efforts and you have done a great job so far. I only have one remark about your videos nowadays : PLEASE, PLEASE stop talking so much during the moves, you're ruining the magic of the game, you distract us from the real game with your ideas. I believe you should be a little more objective and keep the game as much pure as you can. I don't want to offend you or anything, you are a... eh (jk 😅)... good player, but sometimes without your want, you mislead us. That's all, love your work, some of it anyway 😂. Please take that message under your consideration. P.S.: sorry for the poorly English😁

If rd8+ then bf8+ blocking and after the king moves then re4 and there is no way to save both bishop and knight

@@eccentrichorse11 Thanks for the reply! Can the knight check on H6 because the bishop would be pinned after blocking? Then trade knight for the light squared bishop and save the dark?

@@ravimani8179 Yeah you are right. So maybe if white plays rd8+ Black simple moves the king and then there is no defence against re4

I used to like Capablanca's games. But unlike tal's games or Bobby's games, Capablanca's games don't have commentary by other famous legendary players. Which makes the saga less interesting.
