Much as I enjoy Deco, Art Nouveau is probably my favorite decorative style. Everything looks so dang comfortable, like a pile of quilts and pillows under a gracefully drooping willow tree. I could nap in Art Nouveau, and would probably look aesthetic af while doing so. More importantly, though, I'd have a very pleasant nap!

Art Nouveau lends itself to the common people who live close to the earth and use humble materials. Art Deco can give an opulent affect amenable to imperialistic and authoritarian expressions of power. Art Deco glorifies technological progress, yet Art Nouveau appeals more to the imagination and naturally harmonious ways of living. So yeah, it's Art Nouveau; I feel bad for Art Deco because this isn't a fair contest.

Yet I see the opposite! Art Noveau is very expensive to reproduce, something exclusive for the elites and art deco is much more popular and easy to reproduce for the common folk. (but I do think noveau is much prettier)
@UnReaLgeek
@UnReaLgeek 2 ай бұрын
The early Art Deco wasn't easily reproducible, because it was as much a handcraft movement as Art Nouveau. Later Art Deco, as spearheaded by the early Modern movement embodied by the styles of the Bauhaus, was mass manufactured, because that movement was closely tied to the rise of Industrial Design as a profession and thus the forms were designed with mass manufacture in mind.

I went to art school in Vienna, and out of all of the “new” art movements, my favourite will always be the Sezession and Wiener Werkstätte, an interesting local chapter of early 1900s art and craftspersonship. ❤

art noveau must be my favorite artistic movement. i had classes of aesthetics and history of art as an architecture student and some important fact that my teacher said about the fall of art noveau was that the context of wars discouraged the artists to do something so full of details bc of the iminence of being destructed. definitely i'll look up to find more resources about this information, but makes sense seeing how beautifuly complex the designs were

I'm art nouveau all the way, I was a teen in the 90s when 60s was back in style and art nouveau played a big part in developing my taste. My husband has no sense of taste really but I have a feeling he'd lean art deco, so I tend to furnish our place with more mid-century modern looking pieces because in some ways it's a compromise because mid-century modern tends to have more rounded edges but still looks a bit masculine.

I think both Art Nouveau and Art Deco have their own unique charm, and although they use (or at least originally used) different shapes and colors, I really love the maximalist flair they both bring, and how they are unlike the mostly minimalist modern world. This video also gives me a few ideas on changing up my own place (to which I can't make any major changes because landlord's rules) by putting some easily movable things there and there.

Thanks Kaz for another excellent exploration. I have a keen interest in the relationship between style and cultural zeitgeist. It seems to me Art Nouveau is a feminine esthetic, connecting to the earth as mother. Art Deco celebratetes the manly arts of the machine, power and speed. After WWI Art Nouveau fell from favor in the tide military triumphalism. It is then not surprising the Art Nouveau regained popularity during the Antiwar 1960's. These days I see a mean and aggressive esthetic being propagated, especially in automobiles. See all the snarling scowling faces on new cars. Perhaps a topic for a future video. Best wishes.

I grew up in the 70's and hated that era of design. Even back then everything felt cheap and plastic. When I was a teenager I assisted a neighbor lady as she maintained her elderly mother-in-law's home. It was original, classic art nouveau and I fell in love. I polished that winding, hand carved wooden staircase with true love. Scrubbed the soft pastel tiles with fascination. Hell, all of the woodwork took my breath away. She had an art nouveau grand piano! I wasn't even allowed to wipe it down for fear that I'd mess up the french polish. All my life I've continued to be drawn into that style, but resisted until now. I knew my husband wouldn't like it and I finally found a way to bring in hints and harmony into the master bedroom without going overboard. He's told me many times that he's surprised how comfortable that room is for him. Nice Tiffany lamp with vines twining around the base, a restored chandelier, an art piece made out of original tiles, and a faded carpet half hidden under the bed. Just a bit here and there. I do want to put in an art nouveau fireplace, but we'll see.

I adore both Art Deco and Art Nouveau, but Art Nouveau definitely edges out Deco for me. I just love the natural themes, shapes, and colors so much. One example I always cite for a near perfect display of Art Nouveau is the 2009 movie Chéri (which is based on writings by Colette) - while the movie may not have been a smash hit, the set design is *to die for*, an absolutely gorgeous rendering of the form.

I prefer Art Nouveau. In the '70s, there was a style trend towards the 1920s, and Art Deco was seen in Disco decoration, also in advertising graphics and fonts. I just never liked that scene, I was a '60s kid who really didn't like how things started to feel in the '70s. I never went to Haight-Ashbury or lived the hippy lifestyle, but I loved all the old Victorian houses in San Francisco, and stained glass, and the Mucha posters. Moving past all that into the '70s, it all seemed really cold and alien. The music got bad, too.

Art nouveau influenced our region in the past very much, and the political changes led to a lot of the old curvy "elven" houses being destroyed and replaced by brutalist and socialist realist blocks... It feels just bad... removing the yellow road stones and the shiny metalic grey cobble cubes for the grey and flat ashpalt, the yellow and colourful houses for grey and tan blocks...
