First rule when I started to play rugby. The referee is right even when he is wrong! If you disagree keep your mouth shut and talk to your mates after the game, in the bar. Do not confront the referee at any time. It is a bloody difficult job to be a ref. He is human. Treat him with respect at all times. No referees, no game! Get on with it!

I'm astonished and depressed by the unpleasantness in so many of the comments below (and elsewhere on the internet). All referees make mistakes. This chap (and Nigel Owens) make very few - and they remain civil despite the pressure and criticism. Rugby used to be a game in which, whatever the on-field aggression, players and supporters respected the referee, recognising how difficult it is and how important it is to have a source of on-field authority. It seems to me such a pity that some (not all) supporters of rugby of all nations have let their standards of behaviour slip disgracefully. I'm pretty certain that most critics have never refereed a game in their lives. I appeal to them to change their ways and improve their manners. (and to smile a bit more and snarl a lot less.)

It's not an easy job, even if Nigel makes it look so. But the respect shown to him by all players from all around the globe stands testament to the great referee that he is, and the passion he has for his sport is undeniable. A great man, and a wonderful inspiration to rugby players (and wannabees) all around the world. Thanks Nigel.

Well, two years' late to the party. Nevertheless, I agree. But I think rugby remains a pretty decent beacon in team sports. Generally, players are civilised and respect the referee; supporters mix with opposition supporters in good humour and referees do their very best. Nowt is perfect, of course, but in a very imperfect world rugby ain't bad. PS Though Mr Owens has now retired to his farm (and soon to do some referee-training) he was a towering presence and an excellent example. He can now be found on the UK's "S4C" - a Welsh-language tv channel (he is a native speaker of Welsh) and on the "World Rugby" You-Tube Channel, where he posts vlogs (in English - he is also a native speaker of English) answering viewers' rugby questions, against a backdrop of his Welsh dairy farm. (Who knew he was Welsh? - he hides it so well! :) )

Nigel has consistently been the best over the last 10 years. Australian’s in general are real moaners and bad losers! To say that about Owen was bang out of order! Take their behaviour after they lost to Wales in RWC...pathetic. Nigel has been the standard other refs have strived for over the past 10 years, and everyone knows it! Wayne Barnes being Nige’s closest students and friends also! So I do like this story, delivered with a lot of tongue in cheek and affection. Good one Barnsey! (I’m Welsh btw) so that’s why I’ll always defend Nigel Owens!

Well australia is an awesome place is awesome fucking people... it is well known that they have probably the dirtiest team out of all tier one nations and are notorious for cheating and getting away with it (although it has cleared up quite a bit in recent years)

Players in most sports can have off days and in any game will screw up many, many times. Referees on the other hand are expected to be perfect, it will never happen, no referee never mind a top level one turns up intending to do a bad job. If you get one who gets it right more than they get it wrong you have a good one, if they are great 90% of the time they are exceptional.

@@jimporter If a referee can’t get more than 90% of calls right then I don’t want them anywhere near the pitch. And what happens when a player plays consistently badly? They don’t get picked for the teams. And what happens when a referee is consistently bad? I’d have to say nothing happens to them, considering Roman Poite is still allowed to referee.

He used to be the worst referee in international rugby but he has improved and now is only the third worst behind those French clowns, who helped the Lions get a draw and a win against the All Blacks, with some of the most eccentric rulings I have ever seen. I spent over $2,000 AUD to go to Brisbane last weekend and again he decided the game with a couple of strange decisions in the last few minutes. The Wobblies dominated the second half but they could have come second with a different view of the last few penalties. He has officiated over more All Black losses than all living referees combined.

You have to be kidding... Barnes has been the best ref in the world for about 3 years. Nige is an amazing ref and a wonderful human being but he's prone to reffing on feeling rather than the Laws on occasion, Barnes is also better at communicating than Nige who really only talks in one liners rather than instructions.

“Terrible” ... of course he is. The whole referees panel of World Rugby, including the very best and most experienced, who’ve handled the highest profile games in previous decades and who now, because of that experience and insight must choose which international referees are preferred for World Cup Finals and Semi-Finals, etc., - they ALL got it wrong about Wayne Barnes and thank GOD you’re here to help us understand their failure.

Total bollocks. Nobody in Australia cares about Rara... and certainly won't know who Owens is. AFL, Cricket and Rugby League are far more important to Aussies - particularly in NSW & QLD.

Australia seems weird for that. It's the only country that cares about Aussie Rules, one of 2 that actually care about cricket and the only other people that care about League are people who live north of Sheffield.
