Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor rehearses and introduces his latest work for The Royal Ballet, with dancers Matthew Ball, Calvin Richardson and Edward Watson, and composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/productions/obsidian-tear-by-wayne-mcgregor
Obsidian Tear is the latest work from The Royal Ballet’s award-winning Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor. McGregor has won renown for exploring the limits of what the body can do, through a unique language of movement. One-act works such as Infra, Chroma and Live Fire Exercise and the magnificent full-length ballet Woolf Works combine this virtuoso style with an insatiable curiosity about the role of dance today and its interaction with arts and science in the wider world.
In Obsidian Tear McGregor collaborates with Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, crafting the solitary despair of Salonen’s Lachen verlernt for solo violin and the nihilistic grandeur of his 2011 symphonic poem Nyx into a visceral exploration of myth and modernity.

This piece has the feeling of teenage boys rough housing together, with the sweet baby faced Royal Ballet dancers.

Very happy to hear the gratitude, appreciation and understanding from other dancers viewing this work on KZfaq. It is an enormous opportunity and an important responsibility to see the works that appear on the great stages of our day. Wayne's contribution to dance is significant. Whether or not we like or understand the work, viewership allows us to participate in the conversation about dance and dance making for the 21st century. It is an opportunity worthy of all our gratitude. Thea

I loved watching the process as Wayne created the next bit of choreography on the dancers. Matthew Ball and Calvin Richardson are very talented but I just could not take my eyes off Ed. Perhaps it's a combination of finely honed talent, decades of training. and years of working closely with Wayne. In some ways Watson seems the quintessential McGregor dancer, so expressive and responsive. (I'm sure each dancer's talent is appreciated and used to the fullest in Wayne's ballets). Having just watched the Dante Project, it's interesting to see how Richardson has matured as a dancer.

+Demond Hart I'm not bothered by the whoo and whaa.. It's just expression, one's way of communicating. I don't think its pretentious either but its art.. so its subjective. to each their own.. cheers :)

Actually I've seen a few choreographers do that. Its just another way of conveying the quality of movement he wants. For the dancers once they learn to understand the language he's using it is invaluable. Anything that will make what he wants clear.
