My favorite game of all time. I routinely beat these games while breaking the lives counter and getting all Emeralds by the second zone. I have been playing them basically my entire life. I know them so well, I can tell the slightest difference between ports (Sonic Jam, Gems Collection, DS Collection, etc). It’s been a joy sharing these games with own kids now. Great video and it’s awesome seeing someone else have a similar passion for the games.

I feel that to keep Sonic 3 AIR alive, someone will have the downloadable ROM, but first someone has to get Sonic Origins first. Then you are allowed to download the ROM and get Sonic 3 AIR.

Another review of my favourite game of all time. I have so many memories with this game. And I'll never forget the first time I entered Doomsday Zone. I had NO idea that was gonna happen and I'd already put my controller down. My heart was racing. I'd never experienced something so climatic in a game before. It was so magical. This is a great video! I played the game so much when i was 10 years old and still go back and play it every now and then. I swear I replayed Sonic 3 A.I.R multiple times and never got bored of it. I beaten it with every character on Super & Hyper endings. This is definetely a masterpiece & Knuckles. For all other Sonic games, I instantly delete them after 5 seconds. Sonic 3 is the best thing SEGA ever though about and will never get old. None Sonic game can beat this masterpiece & Knuckles.

I got this game on the day it was released. And nothing has come close to capturing the magic that this game gave me when I was 10. Absolute beast of a game. When developers actually cared about their content and how it would be received. 90's gaming was the best time to be a gamer.

That barrel in Carnival Night made me cry as a kid... could never work it out. I thought you had to time your jumps....

You said one thing in particular that stood out to me: that the super emeralds bring order to the chaos. I have had a theory for a while that the super emeralds are the chaos emeralds + background energy from the phantom ruby. The ruby represents order in the beginning of Sonic Mania it is revealed that the ruby transforms a bunch of egg robos into "the Hard-boiled Heavies" which each have their own will. The ruby granted them dominion over themselves, it gave them control, and turned them into leaders, not eggman's mere pawns. Similarly, hyper sonic has more control over the chaos. Hyper sonic (the super emeralds) is the combination of chaos and order, the emeralds and the ruby. Power from the ruby allowed the chaos emeralds to become more like the master emerald that they were created in the image of. It's called the "master" emerald because it "controls" the other emeralds. So, the master emerald I believe already had this "order" quality. I think this is why mecha sonic could use it to gain a "super" form. A similar power to what was able to transform the egg robos (also robots) it the powerful hard-boiled heavies (also super-powered versions). It was also buried on angel island, meaning it had access to mutate the emeralds (into the super emeralds) while they were on the island. Also, the giant rings for getting the Super Emeralds don't bring you to a special stage, but rather they teleport you to Hidden Palace (similar to how cyber-space (from Sonic Frontiers) and the Phantom Ruby are used for teleportation).

I was 3 when I first played Sonic 1 back in 2000, and I grew up playing them on my family's Genesis with my brother and even my mom. When Mania came out in 2017, my mom played it with me just like the good old days. Now, at 25 years old I'm playing them with my wife. Crazy how some things are so good they stick with you throughout your life. Sonic 3 & Knuckles on an Analogue Mega SG is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

In the Sonic Jam manual, they call the Insta-Shield the “Double Spin Attack” and they describe it as a vortex of wind that Sonic creates around himself, like that of a sonic boom created by supersonic aircraft.

A correction: big arm shows up in S3&K, but for some reason only as knuckles. Also, you were doing the Death Egg boss wrong, which is why you found it tedious. When at the top, you can spin dash them to flip them into the boss.

For those that don't know or are confused of the timeline. The Knuckles story begins a bit after Sonic and Tails return the Master Emerald. The robots were trying to undo what Robotnik couldn't and plotted to harness the ME's power. Mecha Sonic (being their leader) who was easily defeated by Sonic but not destroyed in Sky Santuary tries to make up for it. That's why there is no Death Egg anymore in Lava Reef, no Death Egg zone for Knuckles, no sight of Sonic and Tails or traps for them. No Eggman either (minus that weird sprite error). When I was younger, I thought that his gameplay story runs parallel with Sonic's. But no.

Yes, I was tripped up by that Carnival Nights Zone Act 3 barrel. It baffled me for FIFTEEN YEARS. It wasn't until I watched a KZfaq video in my mid-20's that I learned that all you had to do was stand on the barrel and press Up and Down. Before that, the only way I managed to pass that barrel was by using the Super Sonic transformation to glitch between the barrel and the wall so I can drop through (it didn't always work, as I glitched myself into the wall and got stuck once or twice.) But having finally learned the truth, I felt so dumb because it seemed like such an obvious solution just staring me in the face for all those years.

So back in the early 90s when I was playing this game. This is on sky sanctuary, I have this vivid memory of seeing knuckles actually run off after opening the bridge for you. I started to run off to go through the stage but I wanted to see knuckles again so I back tracked and when I got there he was halfway across the bridge sprinting across is then jumps off the map. I know when you go back normally he’s disappeared and I would think people assume he just respawns but please tell me someone else has seen this. Also during the final boss fight when he’s trying to smash you with the 6 fingers you can just spin dash in place and defeat that phase

A great overview for one of my favorite video games of all time. I don't know if you play fan games, but Noah Copeland's Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit is a wonderful sequel to S3K that helps capture the feeling of this era of the franchise. Everyone should check it out.

It hurt my childhood so much to have Sonic and Knuckles, never owned Sonic 3 and my Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 were on a collection cartridge with MeanBean Machine, so it wasn't compatible with the top loader cart. I remember trying it still for years to see if something had magically changed. It did not.

Bethesda re-releases of Doom 1 and 2 on consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One let you download and play with mods that were originally intended for PC. Granted I think they have to go through a little conversion and approval process first before they're made available to console players. But I don't see any reason why Sega could not do something similar with their re-releases of Genesis/Mega Drive games, Sonic or otherwise.

I own so many copies of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. But ever since Sonic 3 AIR came out, I haven’t played the game any other way. It really is the definitive Sonic 3 experience.

I'm enjoying all the love I'm seeing for Sonic 3&K. For me it is a timeless classic I've played through dozens of times per year. I even still own the cartridges and play them on my Nomad from time to time. You're the first person I've ever heard say Sonic CD as their favorite game...not that i think the game was bad. its awesomely memorable. Just found the level design a bit fractured. But the time travel mechanic was one of the most interesting parts of the game for me.

The Super-form cancel feature also allows you to be able to use Sonic's Insta-Shield without transforming, since you have to press a different button than the one you used to jump. It also allows you to transform with an elemental shield without having to intentionally lose it first.

Fun fact if you spin dash into the little robots you can flip them and spin in to the gravity changes so you can speed run that place

The only game that I know of that has a boss that just keeps going in the newer and more powerful form is Ori and the will of the wisps. Where the final boss just keeps getting stronger and stronger and stronger until you are literally fighting in the air just like in this sonic game. But that is because in Ori and the will of the wisps, the final boss destroys the level around you, so you’re forced to fight in the air while trying to hold yourself up and fighting the boss at the same time which clearly came from this game. Sonic influenced a game that came out more than 20 years after it. That’s awesome .

There's also the fact that Knuckles' campaign clearly takes place *after* Sonic defeats Eggman and stops the Death Egg. Various clues are present to back this up, like the ghost capsule already being broken when Knuckles comes across it in Sandopolis, as well as the Death Egg not being present in the background of Hidden Palace.

I have some news on the XBLA version of the games. They were very recently delisted from the Live Arcade actually, and they would be quite rare now I'd assume considering you could only buy them on a 360. Anyways really good video!

Hey just so you know, the Act 2 boss in Death Egg Zone you can spindash the little robot dudes when they are spiked into the ceiling which flips them round, allowing you to get another try to hurt the boss and hopefully speed up that fight~ I don't see many people talk about this and I kinda found out by mistake~

The Xbox 360 Arcade does have Sonic 3 & Knuckles. You have to get Sonic & Knuckles and it will allow you to play any lock-on combo as well as Sonic & Knuckles by itself.
