Episode#3 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
This video is all about installing the software needed to run our virtual pinball cabinet. I give a rough breakdown of the work that has been done in the virtual pinball community for the last 20 years and then show you my first time experience with using the Nailbuster's All in one Baller Installer. After doing all of the individual installs and tweaking of settings to get things working right the old way on my practice build, this fresh install was definitely a smooth and easy one!
Once again, a special thank you to all of the members of the virtual pinball community who have created these wonderful programs, tables, front ends, and installers for everyone to enjoy! We could not do this with out all of your efforts!

This custom virtual pinball cabinet will be one of the coolest thing I have ever made and I hope you will follow along with the video series and be inspired to create your own! I will be filming the series in the same format as I filmed the custom raspberry pi arcade cabinet series so every aspect of the build can be shown in detail.
If you have any questions about the build, please feel free to comment and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
If you would like to keep up with behind the scenes info, pictures, and videos, follow us at / way_of_the_wrench
If you enjoyed the video, learned some cool tech tips, or would like to use my plans, I would appreciate a like and a subscribe so I can be inspired to create more videos and continue to make better content for you guys! Thanks for watching and if you hit the post notification bell, you will know when our next videos are out!
Do you know someone who would absolutely love watching/making a virtual pinball cabinet build? I would love a share out on your social media!
I hope that these videos can help someone if they want to create their own virtual pinball cabinet and if you would like to make a similar version as mine, go ahead. I will be posting all designs and plans throughout the build videos and a final video showing build costs and plans.
If you have any ideas for the theme or look of the virtual pinball cabinet, please leave a comment down below!!

Thank you for this episode. It was very enlightening. I made a summary of every important fact in Word and put screenshots inbetween. It's a slow and tidious process but then it all makes sense in the end. Also got my DMD working, in the sciptfile at 15:32 you find the settings for the Pixelcade and I set it at true and port=COM4 and it's now working nicely. Thanks again, I followed other tutorials but this is the clearest.

I'm 52 years old and because of people like yourself and others I found the confidence to build my own virtual pinball arcade system. I found a alienware aurora r7 for 20. 2 25in 1080 pc monitors and desk mounting pole for 5. A 40in 1080p tv for 16. 2 speakers for 10, and a real standup arcade cabinet coin doors and all for 15. It took me roughly 4 months on and off (I'm in arizona) building it. I built it and now I'm doing the software portion. So as far as I know I could be the first standup pinball, I'm limited to room in my home thats why I went this route. The pc monitors sit above the playfield monitor. Left side dmd, right marquee. I will be following your tutorial and I thank you for all these videos.

I only had two favourite shop teachers. You're one of them. I'm going to build a VP cabinet but first I'm trying to go through a learning curve before starting. You do instill confidence in my tackling this. My Q is, do you use or need MJR's Pinscape software in your build? If not, why?

I'd love to see your cabinet when you're done! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. No pinscape is not mandatory, it is an option though. For example I used a Virtuapin plunger kit and they use their own controller. Pinscape is the software running on a kl25z board. If you use pinscape with a stand alone kl25z board you will have to figure out a plunger for your setup but as a trade off, pinscape software has a shift button function that he Virtuapin controller doesn't have. Good luck on your build and welcome to the channel!

Next video is decasing monitors and talking about what to get. Then a parts gathering video ( might skip ssf for now and do later). Then a design/plans video. Then start building the cabinet. I purchased the kl25z plunger v3 kit from Virtuapin and to start, that might be it as it cab be used for 15 buttons. After the base budget build is done, I will start looking at all of the extras like dof, ssf, shaker motor, wiper motor, knocker, led addressable led strips, etc. I am heavily leaning towards ssf with exciters and then going from there. Everything works great with two screens after installation, the only problem is that i can't move the DMD to the backglass, but not even to another position. @wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly the positioning of the dmd is done by Cartesian coordinates ( like x;y) from the top left corner of your primary monitor. You can change these values to change the size and position with even negative values if your second monitor is to the left or below in your windows display settings. There is also a setting to allow repositioning for backglass and the dmd so maybe that is turned off. Let me know if you can move it at all after this. Cheers!

I would check Alt+Tab and see if the playfield is up but hidden behind another monitor. @wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
In VPX, there is a desktop mode to select and that's it. Worst case scenario, in editor of the ode you can rotate the playfield to 0 or 270. I believe 0 is landscape and people set this to 270 degrees usually for portrait if fullscreen doesn't work for the vpin cabinets. Good luck and thanks for the watch!

Good afternoon. First of all, congratulations on your work building the pinball and...... let's see if you can help me with the installation of the "baller istaller"... I understand everything and I do it well but I think that when I get to the last phase I'm wrong about something because when I load a table it doesn't appear In my "FullDMD" the entire screen only shows the marker... I'm a little lost because I can't find guidance online and I'm sure this is where I'm wrong. My cabinet configuration is three screens, "Playfield, Backglass and FullDMD"... I have seen other tutorials but they use two screens and not 3....Thank you
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 10 ай бұрын
I would redo the screens portion of the installer and see if something got missed. Beyond that check windows display settings where you rearrange the display numbers. Aldo check your screens for a very small DMD that needs stretched/sized to fit the full DMD. Remember that you need a game that has a full DMD so you can check it. I believe the lephrachaun table does. Good luck!

you don't need to disable anti-virus. You could just exclude the folders and programs, it is harder to figure out but is possible. Windows would block some stuff in the firewall with the AV so you may have to figure out which ports are required. If the ports are randomized you could allow it at the exe.

Yeah ya know I don't usually have any issues with the anti virus, more issues with Windows updates that mess my 7.1 sound settings. Thanks for the watch and your suggestions. Cheers!

Thank you for a very helpful video. I also watched TerryRed's software starter and file explanation videos. However, when I tried the test button using setup.exe in the the vpmame folder the window with the test button dissappear and nothing happens. Also, when I bring up the vpx editor and try to click on backglass icon my mouse disappears. In fact, anytime I place the mouse inside the vpx editor the mouse cursor dissappear. Any suggestions on how to fix it? Any assistance anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Pure Awesomeness!!!! I have failed at installing VP many times over the years. But, I keep coming back and trying. I stopped back today, did my classic google search "how to set up virtual pinball" and your video has me very excited! Could you please tell me what operating system to use? I only have an old imac at the time but I will be purchasing a PC to get this working. I have no idea of what kind of system requirements that are needed. RAM? Processor speed? OS? It will be used only for this project. Thank you so much for this video!!

Sweet! Glad you're trying again as this hobby is too cool to not get started! You will need a pc with windows 10 ( or 11) with at least an i3 but an i5 with say 2.9mhz or newer is recommended. Try to get 16g of ram and a gtx 1050ti or better. Use a new 500g ssd drive for your os install. These are a minimum for 1080p at 60hz display. Do a fresh windows operating system install and then install baller installer. All of this should be in the video series as well. Good luck on your build!

For setting up with a budget PC, what is the minimum graphics requirement for great performance?
@wayofthewrench

I would recommend a gtx 1050 minimum for 1080p at 60hz. I was able to find free gpus around this power just by asking friends and co workers who had ones laying around. You can't get much cheaper than free. Thanks for the watch!

@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is totally possible! There are new tables being made all the time. Some of them are new tables based off of another table's ROM files but with new music/graphics/theme and some are brand new. I haven't done it but have thought it would be cool to make one for the channel. Maybe a shop teacher theme where you try to create projects with out cutting your fingers off....lol. Hello, before installing the PinUP Popper "Baller" Installer more easily, I simply wanted to ask the community if with my I5 Intel PC, 8gb Ram Memory and a 2gb Nvidia 940 I will be able to play VPX casually with the tables that use PinUp popper, Since I play classic tables everything is fine but I really don't know if the requirements of my PC will work. Thank you so much It is to run it in desktop mode
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 5 ай бұрын
It might run 1080p at 60 hz ok but pup packs might be choppy. It's a little below the minimum requirement though. I would run a GTX 1050 minimum with 16 g of ram. Worth a try but you'll wanna upgrade pretty quick so maybe just do the upgrade to start. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! If your doing 1080p at 60hz then it really shouldn't matter but as the resolution goes to 4k and higher refresh rate then You will want to look at the newer versions of hdmi and display port. HDMI, Display Port, and DVI are all digital compared to VGA ( don't use) but DVI is usually only video. With my practice builds I used hdmi and Display Port and both seemed the same at 1080p. Cool, what do you teach?
