WB Won’t Stop Reminding Us Why Physical Media Matters

Adult Swim Games will soon be no more, as delisting or deletion is imminent at WB Games. Adult Swim Games indie developers got confusing warnings from Warner Bros Discovery that soon their games would be removed from Steam, and they might not be able to recover or get control of the soon to be delisted games. Is this yet another sign that physical media dying out is the opposite of what we need, with streaming assets being impossible to own. Maybe the physical media vs streaming war isn’t as clear cut as it was once seen, with the Christopher Nolan physical media commentary in mind. The fact that we own nothing is disturbing; lost media is more rampant than we thought in the digital era. IS there a way to prevent digital indie work from becoming lost media? Is your old DVD collection more important than you thought? In the case of cost cutting measures from WB Discovery and David Zaslav: maybe yes. Coyote vs Acme was shelved by Warner Bros and we never get to see Wile E Coyote and John Cena on the screen together. We don’t even have hope of a Coyote vs Acme movie trailer of the erstwhile Looney Tunes movie. So, make sure you own the movies and games you buy: physical media still has its place.

The problem isn't physical media, the problem is company being legally allowed to keep the copyright of a movie/show/game if they decide to delete it There should be a law saying that any movie/show/game a company choose to delete from their library and not have anything to do with it anymore, will automatically fall in the public domain, so we don't loose a small part of our culture...

The product of these companies is no longer making content. The product is to increase shareholder value. Those 2 things used to align, today it doesn't. Congress needs to step in and close some of these tax loopholes that seemingly incentivize not releasing products. The whole system is dysfunctional.

piracy is the ONLY safe way for digital consumption. It not only gives you access to media you otherwise wouldn't have access to, it also often provides higher quality. A game packaged with intrusive DRM and anticheat software that break the game, or get the pirated one without that stuff and enjoy the same game with no drawbacks.

Open Source and Public Domain are the keys to unlocking a whole new generation of media, if not, multiple generations of medias for people to go about consuming media healthily and trusting one another to always make something that can keep us together even under darker times. But it will also mean undoing the wrongs of today and remembering history so we can remember to undo any more repetitions of bad history when the time comes that we have to resolve it with our own technologies.

The discs themselves also last for like 100 years if maintained properly and can be recycling (along with the box). You also clearly don't know what waste means, because games wouldn't be waste.

Seems like the makers of this video should have done the work to determine if publishers can remove purchased games from your Steam library. You're a major games media website. Contact Steam and ask them what their policy is. It's literally your job. Why shrug your shoulders and say "if this one indie game dev is right." can't you still directly run the game through file explorer? you have the files and game saved to your hard drive storage. you don't have to launch it from the Steam client (library page on the steam client).

Typically if you bought the game from steam, you can still redownload the game. New people just would not be able to purchase it. But if you are on console. What ever you downloaded is the only thing that remains

The fact that they're delisting small indie games because of residuals tells me WB is in trouble. They're financially in debt from inheriting the mess AT&T made by dumping so much into HBO MAX. Zazlav's bread and butter was cheap crappy reality tv on Discovery and The Learning Channel and not much else.

To be fair here, it's not just WB doing this....Sony did this a few weeks back but worse as it was way more games and Best Buy announced months back that soon they won't be selling physical media(movies, tv shows etc) anymore...
