Before you sink your teeth into the review of the WD Black SN850X SSD, it is important to understand that this is not the same as the widely available and industry applauded SN850 SSD. On the face of it, the difference is simply the ‘X’ prefix - Is that really much of a difference? I think it would be pretty fair to say that when the PCIe 4 generation of SSDs hit the consumer market, the one that made the BIGGEST (and earliest) splash was the WD Black SN850. Originally released in Autumn 2020, although it wasn’t the first PCIe4 M.2 SSD, it WAS the first commercially available drive to hit 7,000MB/s (followed incredibly closely by Samsung’s 980 Pro). Now, 2020 was quite a while ago now (give or take a pandemic or two) and in that time a wide variety of top tier (and indeed mid-low tier) brands have expanded in the PCIe 4 SSD tier, challenging the WD Black SSD in terms of performance, durability and price. The 2020 released WD Black SN850, although still hot in the basket of buyers of PS5 storage and regularly on sale during Black Friday and the like, is no longer the groundbreaking drive that it once was. And THIS with where the WD Black SN850X comes in. Now, the SN850X is NOT designed to be a replacement to the SN850. In fact, in recent months, we saw Western Digital roll out the WD Black SN770, a DRAMless, more efficient and more affordable alternative. The SN850X is designed to complete the product family in the PCIe4 M.2 NVMe tier and whereas the SN850 gains notoriety and licencing with the Sony PS5, the WD Black SN850X has its sights squarely on the Premium PC Gamer and Premium Performance tier exclusively (content creators, professional streamers and eSports). But is the WD Black SN850X really that much different? Is this a cash grab or is this a legitimate answer by WD to challengers in the PCIe4 SSD tier? Let’s find out.

A little bit over 2 years ago I bought a WD Black SN850 500GB, and I can tell you that it has been a fantastic drive. I did test the speeds when I got it, and it was as fast as advertise: now 26 months later, I get around 5900MB/s sequential read & 4100MB/s sequential write. Drive can get hot sometimes, and I get throttling once every 2-3 days (I bought the w/o heatsink version btw) so my guess its around the sweet spot.

I went with an SN850X 4TB and an Acidalie SSD/M.2 2280 VB01 Heatsink. SN850X works very well with heatsink!!😀. The ambient temperature was 20°c/68°f and the SN850X, with heatsink, it had an idle temp of 38°c/100.°f. Without any heatsink the SN850X 4TB idle temp was 42°c/108°f.... On full load, the temps went to 61°c/141°f with heatsink...

The SN770 is actually extremely good in a system with a fast cpu and DDR5 ram which makes up for the lack of dram in some situations, in some benchmarks it even beats the Samsung 980 Pro. For light and medium read/write tasks (like 95% of workloads) this thing shreds. Unless you're a professional video editor or a game developer where every minute matters the SN770 is all you need. The SN770 also works great for the PS5, even PCI-Express Gen 3 SSDs run well on PS5 and have barely 5% slower load times than the PS5's internal SSD.

I can confirm. I've got 1 x SN770 (1TB) as my main, Windows 11 drive and 1 x SN850X (1TB) for games. I'm more than happy with my choice. Previously, I was only getting Samsung, since my first SSD 830. Then I got the 840, 850, 860 and then jumped to NVMEs, 970 Evo Plus and lastly, 980Pro. My SATA SSDs never broke down, I was extremely happy with them, that's why I kept getting Samsung. However, my 2 x 970 Evo Plus and my 1 x 980 Pro all broke relatively quickly by some unluckiness, I guess. However, I made the jump to WDs and for 1 year thus far I'm pretty happy with m choice.

It's actually cheaper than the 850. WD wants people to have the 850X but also they are having to lay off employees recently as they have so much competition, so im thinking the lower price is strategy to get people who don't want to pay samsung prices for their 990 ssd.

@NASCompares - currently I have 2x 4TB WD RED SN700 in my Qnap tbs-464. I just want to add 2 more SSD (to have raid5) . Originally I planned 2 more WD red sn700 , but because they are pci-Gen3 , I think about additional maybe SN850x . Of caurse I'm aware that tbs-464 only handle pci-gen3x2 so SN850x would not be fully used ... but presumably (most likely) next gen of tbs-464 will be able to use pci-gen4 . So what's your suggestion : stick with WD RED SSD line ..? or invest in SN850x ..? (of course SN850 has lower TBW but that not a problem in my case .. I will not plan to upload so many TBs of data..)

Somewhere to run my VST plugins and work song projects from as I prefer to minimize all storage usage on my internal ssd and only store the DAW’s main program there along with what’s necessary to be stored on the computers internal ssd.

I am seeing conflicting comments, some says it is single sided and some saying it is double sided! Even in official data sheet they have mentioned exactly same thickness of SN850X regardless the capacity, that means according to data sheet 1TB and 4TB has same thickness, my laptop cannot accept double sided NVMe that's why I want to be sure if 4TB is one sided (I know 1 or 2TB are one sided)

Not quite sure what you mean here, as an SSD doesn't do anything to 'boost' CPU performance in a game, it literally just speeds up access of data (so loading times are shorter, for example). Your actual fps will be exactly the same.

I have a question, is rebuilding the database the same or different to defragging? I’ve recently read the defragging an SSD is a bad idea, so now I’m curious.
@dtucny
@dtucny Жыл бұрын
Typically defragging SSDs is considered bad is due to their lifetime write ratings - typically provided as 'TBW' or terabytes written. An SSD warranty will typically end after a period of time or when the TBW is exceeded, whichever comes sooner. Defragging does a lot of reading and writing data and would typically be scheduled to run at regular intervals, potentially causing enough writing to exceed the TBW before the warranty time limit. That, combined with the fact that SSDs are less impacted by random access than spinning disks, not having to physically move heads around and wait for parts of the disk to rotate to the head location before transfer can happen means that it's less critical to have contiguous file storage. All disks have the capability to remap the location of some data, typically used in spinning disks to avoid problem sectors on the disk, transparently to the host, however, similar processes are used on SSD but significantly more extensively for wear leveling, where the SSD will move data around on its own to avoid individual parts of the nand potentially being worn out prematurely. So, in summary, it's complex, having unfragmented contiguous files would probably give better performance, even on an SSD, but defragmentation software made for HDDs doesn't really have the ability to do it right and it's left to the SSD controller to do the best things for both performance and longevity, unfortunately, typically in an opaque way with little to no visibility into what it's doing and whether or not it's actually the best for your needs.
@Mycall1983
@Mycall1983 Жыл бұрын
@@dtucny Ok cool, so how does defragging compare to rebuilding the database?
@dtucny
@dtucny Жыл бұрын
@@Mycall1983 Assuming a database that has data being added and removed from it, it's similar to a filesystem, records in tables may be stored out of sequence, split into multiple parts etc. Rebuilding a database would typically result in the data being written out sequentially based on the primary key. Depending on how the database is typically used, that may help performance. From an SSD perspective, the entire DB would be read and written when doing a rebuild, which could be a lot, but probably happens less often than defragging would typically happen. A 2TB drive with a 600TB writes warranty limit could be entirely rewritten 300 times before the warranty expired. If you have a DB that fills the drive and rebuild it weekly, it'll be about 6 years, with warranties typically not lasting that long anyway. If you did a daily rebuild though, the warranty would be gone in less than a year.
@Mycall1983
@Mycall1983 Жыл бұрын
@@dtucny ok thanks for the reply, so basically in your opinion rebuild database and defragmentation are similar, but rebuilding the database on an SSD isn’t as important as on a HDD and if it’s only done semi often or even only when the system recommends will do minimal harm?

Everything that is 4000MB/s to 4500MB/s is enough for a PS5 and gaming, the PS5 RAM and GPU VRAM are fast enough to store data that it doesn't even have to move data around from the SSD to the memory that much.

Prices are issues.. specially when i upgraded my cpu memory. Video card already... Im on a 500gb 970 evo pro which is fast enough for what i want it was high perf in 2019. Just not enough space.. i have a 1tb 860 evo sata and 256gb sata and a 1tb mechanical sata. So i need a nvme with more storage get off ny older slower drives. Unfortunstly the 2Tb 850x is expensive. The 1tb is only 99$ which is nice.. but 1tb isnt a lot specially if its gonna make me drop a 1tb mechanical drive already full... So i opted for the silicone power UD90 2Tb for 110$. Its actually as fast as the 770 i found on reviews.. but the 770 costs more. 99$ is great for 1tb 850x on sale.. but ya 1tb is tiny capacity... my 500gb nvme can only hold like 4 video games.. and its frustrating as hell deleting and moving games to slower sata drives i have

A 2TB SN850 is shown as $369 (w/HS). The 2TB SN850X is $289 (wo/HS). Why are you calling the SN850X the "expensive" option and SN850 the "middle ground". That makes SN850 $80 more expensive; say $65 more expensive when you adjust for the heatsink. Your claims make no sense given the cost numbers you show.

I thought 2 was there to to you could do I have the sn850 bought it on drop date 500 bucks I can’t believe ho cheap they are now I thought ps5 was only campitae up to 2tb I didn’t know I could put 4. I have a 8 to extern to and my ps5 was over heating and overheating I took the plates off and the plate on the ssd is get maybe 100 he sometime a couple hours and it would over head and shit off o took the plates off it would last days the. Shit off randomly changed the cables and everything I’ve had my Xbox on since stop date no problems I take care of my ps5 no rest Mode nothing turned off everyday but it was overheating after 3 years then I took the fan and mother board out and cleaned it the gpu was so dusty it was disguising I use to have to put a box fan behind it but I cleaned it and I bought i new ps5 have t take. It out the box yet because my old ls5 won’t shut off I’ve had in on since dec 14 trying to see what the problem was I thought it was the internal the. The external I tried everything then after the clean out it’s been a month and a week and it will not ahit off but I do hear the new ones have the new coils mine has the old edition coils it will probably over heat again eventually I hope I does because I can open my new one with 2 year GameStop warranty if it breaks they give me a new one I had only PlayStations warranty and they would have played my ps5 for 5 minutes and said it wAs ok but u had to run it for hours straight which I know they would not do

Apologies for the sound jumps in places of this video guys. Me and Eddie have noticed that a number of projects that were completed in August were subject to an odd sync issue that comes and go's in the editing process, but the processing technique of KZfaq makes it rather more pronounced. Publishing a vid and article a day might be putting me and Ed to something of a breaking point! Will review this one and a few others and if it's compromising it beyond reproach, we will remove and replace it. Thanks for the comment and please rest assured that we are working on this.

I’m pretty sure SSD speeds don’t matter in the slightest in esports. Well, that’s the null hypothesis anyway. Now, speaking from personal experience, I have all three of these. I upgraded my sata boot drive to a sn850 500gig, and later to sn850x 2tb. And I use a sn770 2tb as my “random stuff” drive. And let me tell you, there’s no difference in fps or load times in e-sports titles, or in any other games for that matter. I’d never tell them apart in a blind test. There is a perceivable difference between an OS installed on a sata ssd and an sn850x, mainly in boot times, especially from hibernation. Honestly as far as I can tell these drives are so fast that you’re limited by other components in your system, at least in casual use.
