I just pulled the trigger on the 850x, and I'll tell you why: *Price.* Currently the "official" 2TB PS5 version of the 850 is 260 bucks while the non-Sony branded version is 370... the 2TB 850x was 170 dollars. A complete reverse of the expected situation where the new drive was supposed to force the price of the older ones to drop. I had to check for 40 mins to make sure it wasn't a mistake on Amazon's part. If I can get a similar drive for *80 to 190 dollars off* and the only trade off is 3 or 4 seconds in this economy, I'm taking it. (these are all prices with the heatsink BTW)

Great vid, I only really needed confirmation that the SN850X was PS5-compatible because it's not marketed as such on the WD website or Amazon. Would look to me like the X model is currently a steal on Amazon UK: £109.48 (1TB) and £218.47 (2TB). Both cheaper than the SN850 at £167.95/£143.99 (1TB licensed/non) and £244.99 (2TB non).

@tomburnham6640
@tomburnham6640 Жыл бұрын
In a PC yes, but unfortunately the PS5 can't utilise the full speed capability of the X version. In the video, the X version tests slower, only by a small amount but it's significant because the X version used is twice the capacity of the regular version. Anyone who knows anything about SSDs knows that higher capacity drives of the same model always have increased performance over thier lower capacity counterparts. Take the 850X for example, the 2TB version has around an average of around 10% higher effective speed than its 1TB counterpart (in PC). In fact, PC tests show that comparing the exact drives used in the video, the 850X 2TB is on average 25% faster than the 1TB regular version... yet when it's used in the PS5 it's testing 30MB/s slower. That's the reason it's cheaper also, because in order to achieve the highest speeds it has to used in a PC with the right software. Whereas the regular SN850 can achieve its speeds in any compatible application, making it more useful and in turn more valuable (hence the higher price).

I upgrade from1tb to 2tb then to 4tb by the time this video was made. So my suggestion is getting the 4tb in your first upgrade unless you have other good use for those sd. The sequential read in all storage models of the sn850x are the same and eventhough i upgrade from the standard sn850 (1tb & 2tb) and currently to sn850x 4tb does extra 300 mbs does not seem to translate to a significant ps5 performance.

could I use the sabrent heatsink on the sn850 4tb?
@JamesACThomson
@JamesACThomson Жыл бұрын
So I had a long chat with a WD agent. If somebody thinks I'm wrong on the below, then please let me know.. They seemed handcuffed in what they could say, as adding a third-party heartsink to a 4TB SN850X that is sold without a heatsink be inadvisable as this would void the warranty. However, I’m pretty sure that using a third party heatsink like Sabrent would be fine, as the different capacities of the SN850X SSDs will be essentially identical to the other SN850X SSDs in terms of dimensions / specifications / the manner in which they emit heat. Hence there is likely no particular physical reason that necessitates that WD not offer a heatsink option for the 4 TB version of the drive (unfortunately you can’t just buy one… if your PC motherboard has a heatsink then the drive would not need one). The SN850X SSDs generate less heat than the SN850 SSDs. So say if we lived in a world where people commonly used third party heatsinks with SN850 SSDs successfully for PS5 use...then this would also likely work with the 4tb SN850X, even though this would be "inadvisable" and not recommended due to voiding the warranty etc.

Wait so you’re saying a difference in seconds that you won’t even really notice is better over an extra terabyte of space?!! Huh??

@@schneiderjoachim1588 @TheLegend is a Legendary Moron because the SN850x is slower BECAUSE the guy tested a 2TB vs a 1TB : Larger equal slower performance (the 4TB would be 16 second slower than the 1TB but not only that the 850x heat LESS than the standard 850 (2tb vs 2tb) so yeah the 850x is TRULY BETTER !

@@nascompares I can see where they're coming from tbh. If one just wants to see comparison results this video is too long-winded. I skipped through most of it myself to see the data I was interested in. Longer videos are great for documentary type stuff or for indepth reviews about a specific product, but not necessarily for a benchmark comparison. No offense or disrespect though. Thanks for your video!
