There is a Canadian EMO/Indy/punk, slightly punk. Gentleman that is the brain main creator behind it was actually in a very important, hard-core punk band called Propagandhi. But the second band he’s in is more singer songwriter, and he is more of an enigma when it comes to his literary lyrics ,mentions. Always curious as to why he names amongst his treasured concepts, and or objects….. irony, alcohol, poetry, and cartography. So here we are I can’t wait to see what these most recent reviews center around cause it’s new territory to me and also because I feel I will have light shed on that esteemed list of John. K. Samson of The Weakerthans….

Another wonderful episode! Many of the things you quoted made me tear up a bit, haha. That little book apparently articulated for me a part of myself. I should obviously add it to my personal canon.

I'm so thrilled to hear that I conveyed enough of this priceless book that you were able to catch some of its magic! I felt the same way: it articulated a part of myself to me. I first read it shortly after it came out a little over 2 years ago, and it has stayed with me every day. All best to you!

i don't know if i'd use the word 'revise' for one's literary canon. i think it's more of an expansion. books that were once important to me always remain important even if i can't recreate the initial reaction i had to them.

Newton laid his map on the surface of a billiard table. Einstein was smarter, and in 1915 laid his map on the surface of a trampoline.

Sometimes I wish I could live as long as a Patriarch if only for the chance to sneak a peek into each reader's Personal Canon- including (if not especially) the lists of books of those who read stuff I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Would any of these Canons be identical to each other? Or would they all differ in tiny details such as two editions of the same book, two different translations, or even just two covers? I wish I could summon Borges to help me articulate this thought a little better; in any case, thank you for this new episode of Why Do We Read Fiction, and enjoy your weekend 🤟

I totally get this. I would love to have access to such personal lists across the ages. And it would be cool to evaluate them against each other. I'm in the mind of what they do over at "The Greatest Books": thegreatestbooks.org/lists/details

"...until we get close to something that is unbearable." That's how it is for me. Enjoyable, but painful to the point of unbearable, and that's when I need to drop the book (for a couple of days) because it hurts me too much.

Yes. Yes. I know this feeling well. Isn’t the close proximity of pleasure and pain so interesting?
