I think there is a distinction between what Andrew does and what people say he does. Saying he’s the greatest journalist of our generation really means nothing. That being said his format was always super interesting as a peek into a side of weird america but it’s definitely not the first time someone has interviewed someone and didn’t cut them off when they went on a rant. Saying “oh this is so disappointing” is just people who formed weird a parasocial relationship with AC and thought he was their friend or mentor. I know you guys know what I’m talking about because you all think Nick Mullen is your best friend

@Antonio-Gransci I mean interesting is subjective, but I would pay money to see an interview with someone from the 80s that truly believed in satanic panic and to see them rant the same way as a subject of a channel 5 video. The word “journalism” is thrown around too much, I mean fuck a kotaku reviewer can call himself a “journalist”- he’s an entertainer who made videos of weird people that sometimes have political agendas behind what makes them weird. Whether you like the videos or not that’s fine but I do agree that most of his videos are seriously overhyped by brainless fans thatll put anyone on a moral pedestal with decent content.

the hoff twins vid is goated, but andrew wasn't even present for that one if i remember right? anyway nick kind of hits upon the compelling nature of channel 5's content when he says that this side of america has been "drilled down our throats as this dangerous threat" but the way andrew's interviews are conducted and edited works to humanize whoever he's interviewing, as they are also-to varying degrees-victims themselves. he's not slapping them in the face with "don't you feel bad for the police officers who lost their lives during the capitol riot, sir?!?" the way CNN would, nor is the goal to overwhelm them with gotchyas or make them look dumb like jordan klepper does. nick's right that gonzo journalists, journos at vice, and people like louis theroux have been doing this for decades and it ultimately isn't revolutionary. but hey, it's what's popping right now. also nobody else is getting alex jones to lift weights with them while in character. i'm gay for that shit.

@@macicoinc9363 yeah I’ve always felt that in interviews he talks big game about being like nonpartisan and really getting in there and exploring these communities in a more objective way but I always felt like the contempt for the subjects was in the editing. Unlike Sacha Baron Cohen where he simply baits people into making an ass of themselves, Callaghan is friendly in person and then the edit comes out and it’s a full on mockery. also, this guy is not nearly as empathetic and people make him out to be, hes actually shitty towards a lot of people. They did a Catalina Wine Mixer video that is pretty awful. I like Channel 5, but I've seen Andrew Callaghan be compared to Louie Theroux, which I think is kinda dumb because Louie makes actual documentaries. He's pretty professional in his interviews and is able to ask better questions while still maintaining his position on the subject. I think his stuff is more engaging as journalism even if they both are entertainment. I think the "greatest journalist of our time" thing comes from most fans of Andrew literally not reading articles or books.
