$50 for straps. $150 for forks. $50,000+ when a log rolls off and crushes a couple legs. Being careful is good. It’s the unexpected that hurts the most. 😏

The road crew should have installed 4’ culverts under the road. That’s a lot of water. I know you get hammered a lot about safety and equipment. My comments come from experience in logging and construction on my own place. Getting injured is not just about money but losing the ability to move about easily. Injured limbs, muscles, and gashes, are not fun. I’m sure I am not telling you anything you don’t know but spending a little money on good equipment can save you some real misery. You two remind me a lot of my wife and I. Working together t make a good life. Love your videos. 😊

Flip flops and no hearing protection along with how much cutting you all are doing, it may pay dividends now to invest in some proper safety equipment, helmet, pants, and what already mentioned . You pay as you get older of the damage to your hearing. Safety sally would give kudus for being a bit more safety conscious eh😀

As I watch you both move logs to your mill, My mind keeps flashing a picture I saw several years ago of a county worker removing a log from a covert just like the one you two are working at now. The picture that is stuck in my mind is after the log rolled over the bucket on down on the tractor operator. All it takes is a rock in the road, a hole in the driveway or something you didn't think about. Just be careful!

Man guys, If you're going to be doing all this wood moving around please at least get a set of pallet forks for the tractor. PF4442W is what you need and guessing your cost would be around $1500 usd. Has roll back protection and much safer than trying to use a bucket, log roller and so forth. $1500 is cheap compared to getting hurt, doctor bills?, plus who knows how many loss days from work. Please, work smart, work safe.

I think when the water goes down even more than it is now, I would bring in a few of those big boulder rocks and shore up on both sides of the outer areas of the existing culverts that are there, and make it a little more less likely for the water to erode more in the future. Now something that simple would be an effort, but something that is very managible, now before any real damage is done in the future.

This year has been bad for road wash outs. Here locally in NE Ga, there have been 5 very busy secondary paved roads compromised and closed. In hindsight when planning ahead for culverts, if you think you need a 2' culvert, put in 2 of them or 4' culvert. Also, put in plenty of big rocks on upstream side to help prevent washouts ! Live and learn !!!

It looked like you all could have a great swiming hole above your driveway there at the culverts. A few very well placed rocks/boulders would create a deeper pool plus it would possibly save your culverts from a future blowout too. It would create a baffle to protect and slow down the speed and the direct force of the water on your driveway and culvert. The way those who shall not be named, who made a V shaped topography landscape directed straight at your culvert, they really have done y'all a diservice. Plus it could turn into an awesome trout hole for you also. Do not forget to secure the uphill end of the culverts with a lot more rocks/boulders that they left there for you! Make them as bomb proof as you can!

I think saving downed trees is fine but if it is not cost effective by the time you waste all time and gas and wear and tear on equipment you would just be better to cut a tree close to the homestead and thin the forest as the forest is just a crop that grows back or burns or falls over because of the wind

Bridge washouts is a problem with most people who live in a forest, which is where I used to live when I was younger. In the half mile deep driveway, you can see the ruins of the main highway into the nearby city that was moved after a bridge wash outed decades before in our part of a national forest, and long before we families moved in. There are three families in the forest so not much pull, politically, and that is what it comes down to when it comes to have the county restore the old bridge. It sounds like to me your road is no longer used for logging or else the logging company would have been there with bells a ringing.

People all through the mountain ranges were sweating and worrying about flooding. Some did get some pretty heavy flooding, others were like you two, hard to sleep but everything stayed in place. Living on a forestry road is definitely a sketchy proposition if they don't keep it up to functional properly. Unfortunately logging companies, mining companies often slack off on the safety of the terrain above and below the roads. Landslides have been more frequent because of this.
