A nicely understated exchange: Sulu (grabbing Uhura) "Ah!Fair maiden!" Uhura(pushing him away)"Sorry, neither!" .

Spock's whole breakdown scene was famously done in a single one take. Nimoy had been teaching actors before Star Trek.

I wish you had kept in Kirk's almost whispered line, as he is looking up at The Enterprise ceiling: "Never lose you! Never!" It shows how much he loves being a Captain, and that his ship and crew mean everything to him!

Apart from the two pilots The Cage (1964) and Where No Man Has Gone Before (1965), this episode was only the fifth episode filmed when season one production began in May of 1966. The Naked Time was filmed June 30-July 11th and in was in strong consideration to air first - since it introduced everyone and was a good showcase for ships’ operations - but it was deemed too confusing to introduce characters behaving strangely before we see how they behave normally, and also the ending with the time warp was such a mind-twister, they decided The Man Trap, with a simple monster of the week, would be a more relatable intro to the universe.

An early episode that helped cement the characters' personalities and places, with outstanding acting (especially Shatner and Nimoy). Not informative about the Federation, or Star Fleet, or their universe and even somewhat light on the sci-fi angles, but solid nonetheless. You had a great time with it and gave us a great time visiting it.

Two main bloopers in this episode: Lt. Uhura should have been infected when Sulu grabbed her on the bridge, but wasn't. Also, Scotty was using some type of laser cutter to cut the panel out of the wall next to the door into engineering. It was supposed to be hot as indicated by the charred edges and steam. However, Scotty clearly grabs the piece of supposedly hot metal with his bare hand. There are others, but these are the ones most noticeable to me.

This was originally supposed to be a two part episode, with the cliffhanger being the scene where the bridge crew realize that they are travelling backwards in time. The opening of part two would be the crew waking up to find the Enterprise struggling to maintain orbit around a planet 300 years in the past. Part 2 was eventually filmed later in season 1 as episode 19 "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" I did not mention the name of the planet to prevent spoilers, I don't remember the reasoning behind why the two part episode was not made, I think it was budget reasons.

Actually, after "The Menagerie," Roddenberry made it a rule that the show would not have any other multiple-part stories. The thinking was that in order to build up viewership, self-contained episodes were best. This way, it wasn't mandatory for newcomers to have seen any previous episodes to get what the show was about and who these characters were. Nowadays, that's just no longer a consideration.

Subsequent Trek shows have established that Spock and Christine had known each other for years by the time they served under Kirk, so Chapel's confession of feelings for the Vulcan first officer are not quite as jarring now as they might have seemed when this episode first aired. (Once you're done with TOS, you might consider checking out the current series Strange New Worlds, as it's very much in the spirit of the classic show while also being updated for a modern audience.)

That’s not the same universe as TOS NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno 21 күн бұрын
@@kunserndsittizen2655 It is the same universe, albeit affected by events such as the Temporal Cold War from ENT, as confirmed by "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" from SNW. But if we start nitpicking continuity problems between TOS and its spinoffs too hard, we'll have to toss out TNG, let alone anything from the last few years. After all, Spock in "Space Seed" makes it 100% clear that the Eugenics Wars = World War III and explicitly states that this event happened in the 1990s, but "Encounter at Farpoint" moves World War III to the 21st century and makes no references to Khan or the other Augments. ("Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" actually bothered to fix the WWIII continuity problem, much like how ENT explained the Klingon forehead thing in "Divergence." Whether such things actually needed an in-continuity explanation is debatable; it's probably easier just to say that Trek continuity is whatever the current show says it is, regardless of what came before. That was Roddenberry's approach, for better or worse.)

Controversial Topic! Uhura's green hoop earrings. Plastic or Jade? Yes, fans have arguments about this. I always assumed they were supposed to be jade, but the costume ones are plastic and that's what they are canonically. No one has been able to convince me they are not supposed to be jade. They're jade!
@luminiferous1960

I think her earrings are made of African Jade. According to the geologyscience website: "African Jade is a stunning green gemstone primarily found in South Africa. Despite its name, it’s not actually jade but rather a type of garnet. Its striking green hue makes it a sought-after gemstone for jewelry and ornamental purposes...African Jade is predominantly sourced from the Northern provinces of South Africa...Although it’s commonly referred to as jade, it’s distinct from the jadeite and nephrite varieties traditionally associated with the term... Significance in African Culture and Traditions: African Jade holds cultural significance in various African communities, although its specific significance can vary depending on the region and ethnic group. In some cultures, green stones are associated with fertility, growth, and prosperity, making African Jade a symbol of abundance and vitality. It’s often used in traditional jewelry, ornaments, and ceremonial objects... In addition to its aesthetic appeal, African Jade may also hold spiritual significance for some communities. Like many gemstones, it’s believed to possess metaphysical properties, including promoting balance, harmony, and emotional healing... In African folklore and mythology, gemstones often feature prominently as symbols of power, protection, and connection to the divine. While specific legends related to African Jade may vary, it’s not uncommon for gemstones in general to be imbued with mystical attributes and narrative significance... African Jade’s striking green color and attractive appearance make it a sought-after gemstone for jewelry making. It is commonly cut into faceted gemstones for use in rings, earrings, pendants, and bracelets. Overall, African Jade represents not only the natural beauty of the continent but also the rich tapestry of cultural traditions and beliefs that have shaped its significance over time." We know that Uhuru is from Kenya in Africa.

Can anyone explain why a Japanese American actor, playing a Frenchman of the Three Musketeers, attempts an English accent? That's almost as bizarre as Picard, another Frenchman, speaking with his English accent. (I concede that continental Europeans do learn British English more often than American English, but still, Picard's supposedly French!)
@RubesGoodBrainCoffee
@RubesGoodBrainCoffee 21 күн бұрын
In my head canon, there was another war between England and France, and England won. Inevitably, there would be cultural cross-pollination similar to what happened after the Normans invaded England in 1066. It's the only thing, to me, that makes any sense whatsoever.

@@photonicusNot just his education. In season 2 of the Picard series (specifically episode 4), he says that the Picard family had escaped from France to England just after WWII, leaving the chateau in the hands of caretakers, & didn't return until he was around 9-10 years old.

The Picard family was Jewish and escaped the Nazi occupation of France during WW2, and fled to England as expats. I think we’re left to assume some of the family went back to run the vineyard, but they remained a kind of French/Brit hybrid family into the future.
