For the E46 CSL v8, in the video you mention the E39 engine which is the S62 but the description shows S65B40. Its this correct? or was this the predecessor to the v8 E9x

A 630bhp V10 Clad M5 and M6 CSL with a 9,000rpm redline and ofcourse reduced weight, increased rigidity would have made mince meat of most challengers. IMHO there was a market for those cars in period. We saw the advent of very limited edition cars really take flight in that time. I miss the old days, this new stuff ain't it. Dollars to pennies, the M5 CSL is as light as the new CSL.

If V10 M5/M6 CSL were made with DCT and 5.7 9k rpm stroker, without a shadow of doubt it would be now widely regarded as 'peak M' and most collectible modern BMW. What a shame the financial crisis of 2008 didn't allow it to happen.

Wow the prototype vehicles are developed to such a high level that they look production ready. Really shows that BMW M are really mad scientists when you see the secret projects that were never revealed.

This takes me back 23 years to when I was a BMW Durability driver out of the BMW AG engineering facility in Los Angeles. After a year I was promoted to be able to drive the original prototype X5, the prototype E46 M3 and the prototype E39 M5. Unfortunately I was not allowed to drive the prototype Z8 but I got to admire it every day when I went to work and sometimes the BMW AG engineers would drive it on my route so I got to admire it all day. Before I retire maybe I can get a job again with them here in AZ :-)

Thank you for this great insight, never knew about the specs. These cars inspired us to build our own little concept car. A E46 M3 V10 + DCT ! That almost could’ve been a car you guys build. But you certainly got us inspired to do it. Thank you!

A DCT was available in 2006 and BMW could have had PERFECTION with the V10 M5 and M6.

Downside of DCT is weight. I'd rather have 80kg less of it and a manual gearbox.

Building an E63 M6 lightweight myself and a lot of what the CSL has is exactly what I have planned. Aside from the active aero as I will be using static aero. So wish they had been produced with the DCT. Every issue I have with this car is down to the SMG and it’s counterparts.

It's possible to retrofit the DCT with the V10, it's been done. Far from straight-forward of course... There's a V10 E46 M3 with a DCT that someone built.

@@Matthew-nl9kd as soon as someone comes out with software that can be purchased with mounted hardware, I’d love to do it. There’s only one place I’ve found that has a kit available, but they want $10k for the entire swap kit. I’d rather just get the essentials and source the rest myself.

@@The_North0 I refreshed basically everything. Sensor/wiring on the top, all solenoid o-rings, pump, accumulator, seals, etc. All is well now with many track days since, but I would still prefer a DCT if there was a reasonable option for swapping.

M3 CSL with a V8...oh mate. That should have been on the production line. 430PS in a small family saloon..in 2003...absolute madness M5 large family saloon. 630PS ABSOLUTE MADNESS! That's more than the M5 today! DCT...OH MATE WHY DID BMW NOT DISH THESE OUT?

The car is stunishing absolutly tremendous 👌🏻 A V8 lightwight CSL, That’s a hell of a deal 😂 Can‘t wait to see the others. But a small mistake, at 3:20 you can see S65VB40 as Engine but the E39 has a S62.

I agree about the nonsense in not building a super car. The brand has a huge recognition in motorsporting. However, BMW brand is still arguably the most interesting brand in auto industry.

Bmw had a very successful path in Motorsport, which they don't have anymore. What have they achieved these last 20 years?! What remarkable successes have they had?! I have an E36 M3. It's my daily driver. Oh boy has it been a nightmare with maintenance. But I love the hell out of it. Despite all the plastic and oil leaks. It's my nightmare. Never getting rid of it.

M6 V10 with active aero 🚗💨 😍😍😍 What he said is completely true I had a 335i GT F34 and the front became very unstable at over 150km/h because of the active wing at the back.

So it’s basically a garage full of cars that should have been and put into production, even as special models. That we will never experience because the world is going toward electrification. Honestly it is bittersweet. I’m glad that BMW shows that they are experimenting. But disappointed that even if limited production was available, it never happened.

I don’t know if we should be happy to see these cars or disappointed. The cries for M5 CSL truly shows that a decision to not produce a second iteration of E60 M5 may have been a miss, yet the world will forever know that there is only 1 version of BMW V10 for general production designated as S85. Iconic.
