We Are One released their newest generation of Union carbon fiber rims a couple years back, with options that span from gravel and dirt jump bikes through to enduro and downhill. As with the rest of the Revolution range, the We Are One Union rims are made by hand in Kamloops, BC, with their unique layup process that ensures precise fiber alignment which should produce the strongest rim possible. The process is controlled in a way that means the rims need no post treatment once removed from the mold, which is a mark of how well We Are One Composites have their process nailed down. We were stoked to put a We Are One Revolution wheelset to the test on our high-pivot Norco Range C1 and We Are One Arrival test bikes for some extended mileage.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Before we get further into this review, we must admit a bit of a screw up on our end…We recently published a carbon wheel video and mentioned that we were not pleased with how stiff the Revolution wheels were on our Norco Range. Shortly after publishing that video, we were trying to diagnose the reason we were not loving our Range test bike and discovered that there was a defective bearing in the shock extension link, resulting in a less-than-desirable feel out of the bike and wheels. Simply put, the bike had a defective part that negatively impacted our impression of the wheels, and now that we have another set on a different bike and have also received a new shock and shock extension link for the Norco Range, our impressions have changed greatly.
THE DIRT
For our test period we rode two sets of wheels, both the Onyx Vesper hub build, and an Industry 9 hydra set. As we mentioned above, our initial impressions aboard the Norco Range with its compromised suspension left us searching for ways to improve the bike, and since we hadn’t ridden, We Are One wheels before, we assumed this harshness came from the wheels. After getting another bike and finding a very different experience we re-examined the Range as so many others were loving that bike. We found the issue and worked with Norco to fix the bike and have since been very pleased.
We had some issues with ghost-shifting on the Onyx Vesper-equipped wheelset. Under heavy load, and especially when pedaling through compressions, the chain would skip intermittently. After a discussion with Onyx, we learned that this was an issue that they were aware of with the first batch of Vesper hubs and have updated the driver to rectify it. This should ensure anyone with a “problem” hub can get it fixed without too much stress. Aside from the skipping issues, the eerie silence of the sprag clutch freehub and the limited drag made the Onyx hubs a pleasant ride. The Industry 9 built wheelset had zero issues, shifting perfectly throughout our rough test sessions and producing insanely quick and reliable pickup with their signature buzz.
When it comes time to evaluate the ride quality and experience of the wheels, we’ve got nothing but good things to say. I’m a big fan of compliance as I seek out loose, chunky, and rocky terrain that often doesn’t have tons of traction. Finding a wheel that can blend traction, comfort, and compliance with the desired stiffness for hard corners and compressions is a difficult search. It seems We Are One Composites has achieved that mixture with their handmade layup process and we can see why they have such a dedicated fan base.
To complete the test process, I traveled to Los Angeles to ride some of my hometown trails which I’m intimately familiar with, as well as a trip to Sedona Mountain Bike Festival. Both locations gave me the opportunity to beat on these wheels in very challenging terrain where both sharp rock edges and big compression landings on hard, off-camber rock slabs are readily available. I found the wheels were comfortable and not overly stiff when bashing into square-edged hits yet held their shape and composure when landing drops onto slabs. Also noted was the little bit of flex, or compliance as the wheels deflected on angled, or off-camber rock slabs, which certainly helped avoid some flat tires and likely some serious wheel-damage when blind hucks went wrong.

huge respect to you guys for correcting a mistake like that! I actually bought a set of unions after your INITIAL review. I didn't buy them BECAUSE of your review but I did watch it and did not believe they could be so bad. the moment I put them on my bike and got a ride on them, I was immediately extremely impressed. they tracked super well, didn't get deflected super badly off small trail imperfections etc etc. the BEST thing about them is that I have thrown many many bike park days at them, shuttle laps, hundreds and hundreds on miles of pedaling and they have yet to require any attention from me. I HONESTLY think these wheels are the most reliable part of my bike at this point and i'm not joking about that. They are the only part I haven't had to give any TLC to in the last year or so

I am glad to see this review, as my experience with my set of We Are One was completely different than your previous review. I commented on that experience in your previous review (at length) and to see this new review and clarifying the reason for the poor review of the wheels, speaks greatly of you and your team. Great Job.

I am SO GLAD you made this. I was in the market for a pair of carbon wheels and saw your review. I was going to go with the Zipps and my cousin who has a pair of WRO could not believe what you guys where saying. I ended up going with WEO based on his rec and I was so blown away by them. I was wondering what happened. I am currently watching your reviews for my first EBike and wondered if my likes meshed with you guys and your reviews. Don't worry.....still a fan and glad you guys figured it our. P.S. . what is your opinion on the Transition Repeater?

I bought a set of WR1 wheels when Dustin first started out. They are the Agent rims with Onyx classic hubs. They have been hands down the best wheelset I have ever had. I have ridden them pretty hard and have had no issues. A few scratches but the rims look great for 4.5-5 years old. I just ordered a set of the new Convergent Rims with the Onyx Classic hubs for my new Firebird. Can't wait...

Are they nicer than aluminum rims? ABSOLUTELY. What you're really paying for is an AMAZING warranty. They truly help you out! I don't have an issue yet, more like a gouge in my rim which does not leak or cause any riding issues. They told me if this ever becomes a problem, I just have to pay shipping for a new rim OR I could even send mine in to be re-laced by We Are One and all I would have to do is ship my wheel over to them and pay for shipping back and a fee to re-lace. What more can you ask for?

My rear wheel broke on the second ride 20 days after I bought them. The warranty from the US is way more complicated than it sound, you have to break apart the wheel and send the hub to BC , the shipping needs to be domicile because it’s international and they won’t pay your import taxes in case there’s any. That shipping is expensive by the way , you pay for the lacing , the new spokes, the new nipples and the return shipping, after all you’ll pay about $200 to get the wheel rolling again. Because they broke before a month I ended up doing the return to the bike shop instead. The wheel felt nice until it broke. Just be aware if you in the US.

I have these rims with the Onyx hubs. Great wheels. NOT harsh. Also...my first set of carbon rims, and I wouldn't say worth $1600. They are certainly better than aluminum rims, but maybe not a mandatory upgrade. I'd rather have nice hubs and aluminum rims than crappy hubs with carbon rims. If cost is no option obviously both is better.

@@justind5262 I agree. I also think anyone with an ebike will eventually want to upgrade to a pair of carbon rims with lifetime no questions asked warranty. If you own an ebike you will definitely do more miles and do it faster and harder than you will ever do on a regular bike. I have started to go through a bunch of Aluminum rims on my ebikes and I am not a huge jumper either. I just go really really fast.

Yo, in the original video you clearly stated that you tried these wheels on various bikes to ensure it wasn’t the bike that was affecting the perception of the wheel performance. That is not what you’re stating in this video. Not sure how you can explain that. Sounds like WAO gave you guys a heavy call.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
We did have these wheels on two bikes. But in the original video, we said, or should have across as, we tried two sets of wheels on the problematic bike (Norco Range). The bike got slightly better switching to DTs but that could of been an illusion as the culprit of our problem on the Range was a seized linkage bearing, causing an overly rough ride. We fixed the bike, new linkage, fresh rebuilt shock and threw the WAO's back on and it rode night and day different. What prompted are redux on these wheels was all the commenters feedback loving the WAO wheels. Had us second guessing everything, so we set out for more testing. We actually didn't talk to WAO until we the Arrival to test.
