I really like the thumbnail for your video this week - the wide shot with both of you standing on the deck. It may seem small, but seeing both of you out there on deck in the sunshine is great. Great video, too, but I always say (and mean) that!

I would think about each step of a boat project. Especially as I go to sleep each night. Then work the project but seldom would think of every step. I installed a 100 gallon Marine alloy aluminum water tank and a 75 gallon water tank. This was before the days of water-makers. Always enjoyed the satisfaction of a successful project. Glad to see your doing well. Bill is a very thoughtful boat project craft man!

Diesel fumes are a hazard if the are compressed. During field operations, the four hole latrines are filled with diesel because they will not explode if a cigarette is tossed into them. Gasoline is added later to ignite the diesel and burn the waste material. Field sanitation 101!

Considering the trips you guys make, the tank upgrades make total sense. You'll still want some on deck fuel when heading to more remote places, but way less and not all the time. Don't forget spares for the pump, filter and fittings though, and some way to at least bypass the flow meter. Maybe a fuel specific hand or battery pump that you can connect to the bow tank and pump fuel into a jerry can in a worst case scenario of needing to manually cross fill. A cut off valve at both ends too, if not already there. I didn't see them but might have missed it.

You two amaze me! FYI, I lived aboard a Peterson 39.5 center cockpit, in the early 2000’s with my boyfriend. We bought the boat as he told me what a great sailor he was…what he didn’t tell me is his mechanical skills stopped at turning the cap of the gas can. No joke! No one can live on a sailboat without having good mechanical skills. So it didn’t take long before our money was gobbled up with paying for boat repairs. So our live aboard in the Caribbean was only one year. And our relationship was done with too. But I loved the life and if I had a Bill I would have continued on. Bill, you are amazing with fixing things! Grace is amazing with her hard work to make this journey possible. Grace, as you know, I’m a cancer survivor too and I’m so happy for your strength going through the cancer fight. Love you guys! Keep sailing. Sending love.

The major reason for fuel bypass in a diesel is to keep the rail and injectors cool. Suggest you monitor the temperature of the day tank for a bit to see if anything has changed.

Bill and Grace great job. Bill after installing all them hoses you are officially now a Hoser Eh!! Seriously that was actually quite the big job and thankfully Grace being there the fiberglass dust was cleaned up. I think safe to say if left to you Bill you would have let it go lol. So this putting more fuel capacity to Calico Skies is a game changer. Again great job and thanks to Dimitris being there to assist he has been a tremendous help. See you later next video and Grace I think it is safe to say positions you have not done or used in a long time you will feel the effects of it. Better than cardboard patterns. We use strips (~2") of cheap luan plywood to make frames with a hot glue gun. One can easily score the luan strip to cut to length. Also, wider strips can be can be marked and cut to easily fit the curve of a hull by making with a pencil/marker spaced by a 1" block.

Your concern is not about the fuel tank pinching the fiberglass, but about waves/beam waves hitting the bow causing the bow to flex and hit the fuel tank edges hard enough the fiberglass hull gets cracked from the metal fuel tank. Several cruisers use a sheet of hard rubber mat between the fuel tank and the hull to prevent this cracking to the hull.
@CalicoSkiesSailing

interesting...didn't think of it that way! Will keep and eye on it. Our bow is pretty sturdy, don't think there is much flex up there

My C&C landfall 38 had factory installed aluminum fuel tanks which were set in a bed of foam at install. Thesewere specs at install because we didn't want to lug around Jerry's, Neither tank had an inspection port either. The main 70L tank still remains in its foam bed because to get it out I'd have to remove the engine. We can motor at 5 knots for 700 miles if we have to. I feel your pain with the gd foam

Brian (assuming you me Trautman?) has issues on his boat too. Installs don't go perfect there either and things do get reworked. Bill is an accountant, that learned this from reading, seeking help from friends, and just overall the school of hard knocks. Leaks happen, the important thing is making sure they don't happen the same way twice. Everyone is learning. Brian was an electrical engineer, his training wasn't this kind of work either.

I see a lot of boats with lots of jerry cans on one side of the boat. Bad idea if nocked over by a gust with full sails can change the righting moment. That means over you go.
@darrengladstone3159
@darrengladstone3159 11 ай бұрын
Point taken, Jerry cans do shift the mass high on the boat. However they did sail a lot of miles with those bad boys without issue. Also they were in a storm, where the difference in righting their 36' boat are Jerry cans lashed on: 1) the cans probably didn't stay lashed, 2) the weather is so bad Jerry cans didn't change much. Most importantly there will be less chance for spilling fuel at frequent on deck transfers, less chance of water contaminated fuel, less frustration and time doing frequent small refills, more room to walk the deck safely, 5% less Beverly hillbilly in appearance, etc etc.

Just FYI the yellow tape dope works better for diesel but the PTFE paste (Permatex 80633) works best of all IMHO. Make sure your Racor fittings are proper. Some are sealing washer style and not NPT threads. A NPT will work on a seal type but only about 2 threads are grabbing and you can suck air through the fitting. Consider putting a shut off valve at the tank if you don't have one. Look at all that deck space!!!

Hey guys! An amazing amount of work to get those tanks changed but what an improvement! Getting that weight and clutter off the deck will be huge.Doing all of this in that Mexican heat can't be easy. I'm curious Bill, what's a ballpark figure on those tanks? They look well made, how much did you save having them made in Mexico? Good move. Nice patreon pitch, smart. I agree on over-thinking the project, it tends to turn into a mountain. Best to dive right in, then when you get into a tight spot you can sleep on it like Bill did earlier. Nice work guys! Happy Birthday Bill🍻. Is there a chance that fuel could be siophoned by accident from the front tank to the day tank causing over filling of it ? A valve between the two tanks would be assurance that no fuel could be transfered unless you open it.

Thank you! I don't think i could develop a siphon, the fittings are on top of the tanks and the hose dips down into the bilge, it would be hard to come back up again with out a pump

If that is foam holding the tank in as you said just pour acetone over it and it will melt away easily.

I’ve commented before cause I love you guys, but what about removing everything from the boat, lightening the load and putting only what you really need back. You’ll find you have loads of space and put the rest in storage.

hi there. Thanks for commenting & following our journey! We would love to offload more but we use everything!! It's just a small boat for the type of cruising we do not to mention our jobs and all the gear that comes with it. We have no storage bc we're traveling globally just happened to be close to the US recently. Actually many cruisers are pretty surprised with how well we store things and how much we're able to stow away with very little impact to our sailing performance.😂We'd love to go bigger some day just not in the budget atm😉

I went with an airhead and ripped out the black water tank altogether. Its so much easier to get rid of a garbage bag of earthy poo than emptying the black tank at the most inopportune times. My Catalina 30 has two water tanks one in the setee and one in the vberth. Since installing a watermaker in the black tank location, I have toyed with the idea of converting the forward tank to a fuel tank...That would leave us with only the 25 gallon tank though...

We ripped out a 15 gallon tank and added another freezer once we installed our high output water maker We still have about 60 gallons

Hey Grace, I’m pretty unlikely to ever have a double mastectomy but after half a lifetime of racing bikes I’ve gone through a surgery or two, so I absolutely get where you’re coming from. You’ve hit the nail on the head describing the process of two steps forward, one step back in your physical recovery. Yup, physio is a really double-edged sword. Every new motion and every increase in range of movement brings on the suck but you’ve got to do it to get back to full range and strength. Getting the scar tissue stretched to allow you to get your muscles good again is at the heart of it all. I honestly think that being a liveaboard is probably the best thing for it because you don’t really have much option other than to get on with it, or you simply become a berth ridden passenger and ain’t nobody got time for that when there’s places to go and great sailing to be had. Keep on keeping on, the rough days will get fewer and you’ll get confidence back in your body’s ability to do stuff. One day you’ll suddenly realise that you’ve not thought about being careful for a while and you’re still ok. That is a great feeling! Great job on the tank revisions, had you thought about running a return line from the top of the aft tank back to the forward tank with a non-return valve to only allow flow forward? That way you can achieve two things, 1) you don’t have to worry about overfilling the aft tank. 2) if you leave the transfer pump running you can fully polish your fuel by recirculating it for a while. If you do go that way with it I recommend fitting a shutoff lever valve as well so you can fully isolate the tanks from one another. Come to that, I assume I missed it but I didn’t notice whether you fitted a shutoff valve on the feed line from the bow tank? If not it’s a good idea to do so just because it allows you to change hoses etc without having to empty everything to avoid filling your bilges with diesel. (Fought that battle myself and it is deeply unpleasant!) Great vlog, you two rock. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

Good tips on the surgery, it's quite the journey! We considered adding another length of hose for polishing but it was hard enough to get one thru the boat LOL. Assuming the fuel is filtered when added and then passed through a racor on the way to the day tank the hope is we have clean fuel!

Hi Bill, Nice work on a complex multi-faceted project. One small but important point is that the Marco (excellent pump!) fuel transfer pump you installed should be turned 180 degrees. The issue is that if the fuel fittings or the fuel impeller case leaks the diesel will leak down into the electrical motor and while diesel has a limited issue of fire with a spark, it will create a fault in the electric motor. In short the impeller pump section needs to be below the electric motor driving the impeller. The installation instructions call out any position except pump housing above the motor. I hope you take this input as constructive support

So glad for the successful refit of fuel. I remember when Bill was saying with the guys he was running short on fuel. How far (motoring time) will 50 gal diesel get you? I wish you could have an electric engine w diesel backup. Bummer having so much fuel on board. Maybe on your next boat upgrade. Blessings!

We were saying a diesel genset with an electric motor would be a pretty sweet setup! We can typically motor at about 5 knots consuming .5 gallons and hour. So we prob have about a 500 mile range.

The only time static electricity has been blamed for igniting diesel, jet or kerosene fuel was TWA Flight 800. And that was only to cover up the fact the Navy shot the plane down. It is a simple matter. Those fuels can only burn when vaporized. That only happens with diesel when injected at high pressures or it reaches its initial boiling point which 200 C or 392 F. And if your fuel ever reaches that temp, you have a major problem.
