Today we finish up tearing down our rare 1 of 250 Callaway Land Rover 4.6 V8. This special V8 is destined for one of our Land Rovers here at the ranch. Can you guess which one?
We do a quick clean up and re seal in preparation of swapping this V8 along with a r380 5 speed manual into a fun upcoming project.
In the late 1990s Callaway produced a modified Range Rover. Quite a rare piece as I believe there were only 250 of them made. A shade more power and some different touches throughout the vehicle made it a special P38.
We were able to unintentionally get our hands on one of the power plants out of a wrecked one. Is it healthy? What was tweaked inside? Today we find out.

Callaway is kind of like a factory level tuner. Mainly for GM products over the years. I think the first big foray into the Corvette tuning in the late 80s was with a twin turbo kit, and they have pretty much made a special edition of that every generation since. They did some e3arly turbo setups for BMW in the 80s as well. In the US there was a limited run of P38 Range Rovers done by them, upped the power some, change the transfer case gear ratio and had some visual enhancements on the interior and exterior. Prior to that I believe they also did a few in period Chevy V8 swaps to Range Rover Classics. Their current lineup is here: callawaycars.com

Nice job on the refresh! I can't imagine putting that in the Four Seasons Range Rover Resort. I think the Eco should stay original. I'm not sure where that sweetie needs to go... 🤔

I know, it is a tough call. The Range Rover Resort has a couple thousand miles on an Atlantic British 4.6, so probably no sense in swapping that out.

Megasquirt is great on a Rover V8, I'd highly recommend it from experience.

That is good to know some first hand experience, I think that is the direction I’m heavily leaning towards. Seems like it should work out nicely and be cleaning that hacking the factory gems stuff together to work.

Try a Fueltech for it, The tunning of this engine would be a breeze with one. An FT600 would be nice to go with such a rare engine

I'm going to look into them as well. Just briefly checking them out it looks like a very quality setup.

That would be neat in there. The only thing against that for me is it only has a few thousand miles on a fresh Atlantic British 4.6. But I suppose I could play musical chairs and swap engines in a few haha.

Seeing it’s so cold your side of the pond and that you have moved some of the workshop equipment into the house, I’m surprised you didn’t make use of the Dishwasher in the Kitchen to wash the bits off (rather than freezing your nuts off outside), or could you not sneak them in past someone? 😂 Great to see you packed the oil pump to help with its initial prime, can I suggest taking the oil filter back off and filling it with oil, just to give the crankshaft a fighting chance to see some oil pressure ASAP 🤔Keep up the great work, looking forward to see what this motor gets installed into😎👍

I think I need to move a little south haha. And yeah the dishwasher may not have gone over greatly with everyone. I’ll make sure to fill the filter once the engine is installed, definitely don’t need any of those issues haha.

I first guessed NADA a few months ago when you first showed the callaway motor. My second guess would be the Yellow Range Rover (not a European guru, so dunno what it was that was special about it). Otherwise, as a gearhead that wrenches on my own stuff, this is definitely my favorite ASMR channel. All of the frustration, fighting rust, busted knuckles, and swearing and threatening violent acts is worth it when the new, shiny parts get fitted together. Nothing wrong with a refresh/reseal. Sometimes, that is all that is needed for an older, but low mileage motor.

You may be on to something. Happy to hear you like it without music over stuff. But yes it all does become worth it and I agree with you that not everything has to be all full bore. I’ve been trying to get better at picking my battle in what projects need to be 100% gone through and what ones can get by with a little less.

Did you keep the doors off the risco disco? My body guy cannot find the door latch mechanism and my drivers door doesn't open unless i reach through and pull up the lock mechanism. I'm just accross the border in MN and could come pick it up. Love the channel! Thanks

The R380 with the LT230 full time 4WD transfer case won't work with the Series front UJs, he'd need to convert to later axles.

Yea, it will definitely get some fresh oil in there before startup. Then run it for a bit and dump the oil while hot then a new filter and fresh oil again.

How long does it usually take you to do one of these rebuilds in real time ? My disco 2 needs some love but it's also my daily driver so it can't be down for too long. You make it look too easy

I didn’t quite track in this one as it takes a bit longer to do it while filming. I probably have 12ish hours on it. The big time swing factor on tearing engines apart like this is how much you end up cleaning. The cleaning added a couple days to the time but not to labor (the time the parts sat soaking in the tub). I did the tear down and reassembly over the period of a week working on it here and there and letting the degreaser do the work so I didn’t have to scrub as much. You can do everything I did to this one while leaving the engine in the Disco. When we did these in the repair shop I would budget 2 days worth of it being on the hoist. If I were doing it at home and for the first time I would plan a week to do all this so I didn’t have to stress over not having it to use.
