To mark the occasion of hitting 1K subscribers on the channel, we set out on a journey to see if we can get 1000 miles out of a single tank of fuel. We'll be sitting almost exclusively on the M25...stupid... yes... idiotic... yes. It's the ultimate range test... with fuel prices rising almost every day, how far can you really get when you try.
We'll savour all the sights the M25 has to offer, from Clackett Lane Services to the Dartford crossing and the QE2 bridge.
Our Saab 95 laps up the miles but it doesn't quite go to plan and things get complicated towards the end.
Many thanks to everyone who has subscribed and watched our videos :-)

I love this. The way you portray it as “let’s do 1000mi on one tank, that’ll be a piece of piss” and then afterwards doing the maths of what type of consumption you’d have to manage. Brilliant! I remember back when VAG’s direct injected turbo diesels first came out and people were able to do >1000km on one tank and that was seen as revolutionary. 1000mi is another level.

@benlee4940
@benlee4940 Жыл бұрын
@@AutoShenanigans I am an idiot who overthought that. The difference is something around 480m. If you assume that you stayed in lane 1 in each direction with 4 x 11m lanes and a central reservation of about the same width (6 lanes and a central reservation between the car in each direction.) Not done a whole lap, (thank goodness) but I know near Heathrow is wider and they've gone to managed Motorway in large stretches, so I've just averaged at 4 lanes, the width of the central reservation varies so I just guessed at 1 lane so it's probably less than 480. I've not counted Dartford crossing, it's not the M25. If you were in lane 4 (or 6 - the fast lane) both ways, then the difference is only 70m. However, the carriageways split a bit to the East of South Mimms near J23, the anti clockwise being shorter. But at J5 the anti clockwise carriageway has a shorter route than the clockwise carriageway. Not sure if the difference is close to 70m, but it might be close. A better estimate of the central reservation would help. This was calculated whilst being a passenger, stuck in traffic, on the M25.

For mindless motorway silliness, one night I drove north up the M6 from the M54 - in a 40mph speed limit (courtesy of Smart Motorway roadworks in Staffordshire) - in a diesel Renault Clio. I turned round at Manchester because it was just too interesting (and I wanted to get some sleep) and the Clio gave me over 95mpg for that trip. In a less-insane incident, I made it all the way from Dover to Corley Services on the M6 on less than 2 gallons, averaging 62mph and getting about 83mpg. It was a good car when it got into a cruise - seemed to have a super-sipper mode. Now I have a diesel Fiesta which is worse in almost every respect - less power, less comfort. less space and no super-sipper mode on a long cruise - altogether a dreadful car, but I couldn't conscionably pass it on to somebody else, so I'll drive it to death. I may be a masochist, but at least I have scruples. Public Service Message - the mk6.5 Fiesta is terrible. If you ever get the chance to buy one, don't.

We use to own an Hyundai i40. Not an interesting car, but a comfy cruiser. We drove it from Glasgow to Southampton and back again on one tank. That was 867miles and there was enough fuel left to take it past the 900mile mark. That was driving at 70mph though with air con. Several bits to improve mpg: hyperdriving, follow a truck at about 50 yards - you will be pulled along by the lorry and Mpg will go up as there is no drag. Don’t stop - wastes fuel, take the food with you and pee in a bottle. Get a car with adaptive cruse control, so slows and speeds up with the vehicle in front. I enjoy all your videos, keep them coming.

My old 9-3 1.9tid did 55mpg at 70mph with cruise control. Though that was going down the M1 and back up it doing a 400 mile round trip 1 evening.

Saab 9-3 and 9-5 are the best cars I have ever owned. The petrol models seem to be most fuel efficient at 82MPH so yeah, not gonna happen on the parked25. I once hit the bottom of the Dartford bridge at 123mph (2am) in a 1983 Cavalier CDi, slowed her down so I didn't fly off the top !!!

Pretty sure it's worth another go. Only next time, check for closures... Speed at 56mph, drafting HGVs... And a few well timed cheeky breaks around peak time to smoothen out the traffic.

Your Saab has very impressive fuel consumption compared to my Volkswagen Passat 2018. I don’t think I could do 860 miles on single tank . BTW it was funny to watch 😂

The KLF did 25 laps in a white transit van back in the day. I'd say it made them insane, but they already sorta were :)

129K subs! Definitely time to try this again, maybe with a Transit van to slipstream behind?

Better option would be M25, M4, M5, M6, M74, swing around Glasgow, back down to M6, M1, M25, M40, M42, M5, M4.....far more interesting and away from the road to hell for as much as possible....

Happy new year Johnny boy. New sub here. Love the channel and especially the humour. As for the M25 , as an Essex boy, I love it. Everyone cunts it off but without it what you gonna do?

John the M25 was designed as a six lane motorway, paid for as a six lane Motorway, however only three then four lanes were built.

Great video, saabs were great cars. That is a fiat engine though, same one they put in the vauxhalls at the time. They aren't the most economical, so you done very well.

It is sadly a fiat engine :( That said.. it still does over 50mpg with 183k on the clock and has never let me down! The rest of the car... mmm... moving on.

Love this. I drive for fuel economy and it started when I had an old M-reg Vauxhall Astra. I filled up at Exeter and drove all the way to Scunthorpe and back again on one tank of diesel. I drove at 55mph all the way just myself and a friend on the way up and only me on the way back. Filled up at the same station when I got back to Exeter and calculated the fuel consumption and it worked out I managed 72mpg. Next, in a 61 plate VW Passat estate I drove to Basildon in Essex. Four people in the car, boot packed full and a carriage box on the roof with extra baggage between us and around our feet (except mine of course as I'm driving). Filled up before leaving, filled up in Basildon and that fill up only cost me £25. I drove up doing 60mph. Had to get back quickly on the return trip for medical reasons for one of the companions, drove back doing about 75-80mph and it cost £35. I can't wait to watch this video!!!
