What was supposed to be a day on the dyno turned out to be a day pulling the engine out of the Ford Focus ST after it decided to drop a cylinder on the drive over to Courtenay Sport.
Seeing as we basically blew it up we can officially say we have the UK's worst example of an ST but can we save it and what BIG plans do we have in store for it.

I personally wouldn't have removed the head bolts in that order. It's had the block mod done already, my guess on compression issue is that one of the shims either side of cylinder three hasn't been hammered in enough and may have damaged the headgasket on refitting. Even if it hasn't damaged it, it may be high enough to stop the gasket making a proper seal and causing a loss of compression. You should be able to tell by gently running your hand or nail over it and feel if it's proud.

The diaphragm in the oil filter housing will of split cause it to piss oil out everywhere! Common fault in these, better to replace the full unit rather than the seal 👍 Cars had block mod done to it aswell which is good news!

If the oil test passes then do a fluid test on the valves in the head, obvs focus on cylinder 3. There’s still some compression, so it could be a hard one to find. It’s had a block mod, but some people do that to seal a cracked liner.

Good work don’t forget to touch up the paint where the engine scraped the chassis leg or it will rust through

Looks like you’ve been having lot of fun 😂 So it looks like the cylinders have had the block mod work done ( the slither’s of metal between the cylinders) so hopefully it hasn’t cracked the liner 🙏🏻 Love the twist with the green laning idea (poor thing😅). Can’t wait for the next instalment.

@@maddercustom Travis could I have your opinion on a quote I got, for a full re-spray / repairs on my orange beastie, please? Two front wings, both rear arches to be repaired, full re-spray. Labour 80 hours at £7k + £1200 for paint, WITH v.a.t NEARLY £10k? Am I being mugged off here?

Is that a rust mark in one of the bores I think a cylinder leakage test should have been done before u stripped it tells u in more detail where compression is being lost

Valve damage on at least a couple of those pistons, not exactly sure why my old comment got removed either. Timing was out it seems or at least it has been at some point. The oil overnight also won't be a definitive answer because an engine doesn't always make proper compression until warm where everything expands. That's why you are supposed to only compression test when the engine is warm rather than cold as it can skew the numbers.

Not sure mate ( we didn’t remove it ) rob said he thinks the timing has been out at some point with the marks on the top of the pistons.

If the timing was out far enough to damage the pistons it wouldn't have run for much longer because the valves would have been bent after and the compression would have been pretty much zero. The tell tale marks visible at 11:31 suggest the timing belt has previously failed at a fairly high engine speed because the second marks on the pistons are where they have bent from the first impact and then struck the piston crown again on the next stroke. Then it would appear it has had the valves replaced and timing re-done before getting it running again. If the valves have been replaced there's no guarantee the bucket clearances have been rechecked/adjusted either which is something else you need to bear in mind.

@@oliverlydon9851 Although these engines are interference design I've known people to have the timing out on a cam by 3 or 4 teeth and it just run badly without any physical damage. That's quite a lot to jump by I would think?

@@Non-Stick_Pan probably mate, I couldn’t tell 100% as the lightning wasn’t great when he showed us the pistons briefly. Just an avenue to explore but it sounds like have more experience in this than I do
