Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.

I’m not sure if we’ll cap the other two.. but we’ll certainly secure and build up the edges and add a solid fence - this also complies with Portuguese law.

Olive trees have what is commonly called "alternate bearing". This is a natural phenomenon and you should expect it and plan for it. If you have a plentiful crop this year, you can already probably expect a not-so-plentiful one next year.

We also have Jeropega in South Africa but we call it Jerapico. There is also a lot of second and third generation Portuguese families. Most of them still speak Portuguese at home, I love that. ❤

prepare new wine barrels by filling with very hot water to make the wood swell. There are a number of videos on you tube on natural fruit fly traps. I just use apple cider vinegar and a couple of drops of dish soap in a bright plastic saucer. Try a few different ones to see what works best. Maybe try the home-made vinegar.

The wine making, well, also the vinegar process, are very interesting to see. So sorry for the barrels, I hope the bees wax is working! Are the grapes you use all Portugese varieties? And I am glad you cover the well!

Can you spritz those fruit flies with a water-dish soap-vinegar solution? An old spray bottle gets a broader spray for me to soak their wings -- they can't fly and drop. They need to be then squished so they don't fly again once they're dry. Maybe leave out the drops of dish soap if you want to collect fallen flies for a lucky baby 🦎?

💐🦋Happy Birthday Carissa!! Just a thought, would it work to put carrying straps around the ends of the beams that would go over your shoulders? The garden looks so nice. Mine is all but done. We get brutal winters here. It can get below 0°F, so only hardy perrenials survive. It's sad to see all the lovely annual flowers go at the end of the season. I don't complain about the heat here anymore, but I do the cold 🥶. This morning it's 56°F inside. That's just not comfortable!! I stacked the bed high with blankets last nite, like a cocoon 😄. But I refuse to turn the furnace on yet. A wood stove would be SO lovely. 🔥👐 Looking forward to seeing the well capping operation. Take care. 🍂🥰🌾♥️

Why did you choose this method for closing the well? Wouldn‘t it be easier with a wooden deck? Especially since it is round?

Mostly to avoid any potential issues in the future.. what with the harsh sun during the summer and persistent rain in the winter, it would need replacing fairly often - it also wouldn’t be fun if the wood failed. The block and beam method with a layer of reinforced concrete on top is strong enough to park a car on and will last a century (hopefully) Also with the price of wood these days… it’s a lot cheaper to do it this way 😅

Wonderful video again, but I noticed that you guys were struggling with those concrete beams. A good idea would be to get yourselves 2 wheels, make a frame and make two handlebars and a meter of chain (small links with a hook on either end. The centre of gravity must be in the middle of the two wheels with a larger linkage at the top of the triangle (highest point. Then build another the same, if possible twice the size to carry a half ton rock. This saves injury to your back/body. These devices will be very handy to carry very heavy beams, logs, even very heavy stones from A to B Now the one end of the chain hook it onto the centre link of your triangle frame, the other end of the chain take it round the concrete beam, lift it off the ground at least 5 inches, and hook the other end to the centre hook. Now with the other device do the same again. You need two people to do this (one in front doing the pulling and the other person doing the pushing. This is so much easier. Hope this gives you other ideas for other chores on your small holding.

THE LAND IN PORTUGAL LOOKS AWESOME, AND GLAD TO SEE UNCLE NICK IS GONNA HELP GET THE WELL COVERED AND SEALED. WILL HELP WITH LESS ALGAE AND EVAPORATION. Another beautiful, calm video. Off loading the beams and blocks from the lorry looked like really hard work in the heat of the day! The garden is looking in tip top condition, it's so nice to be able to harvest this late in the year. As usual, the animals were very entertaining 😊💕💕

You might consider finding two sets of axles with wheels you could attach to platform to haul things around the property. Think of it as a much larger kid's wagon.

Plant a cabbage plant for the chickens and make compost tea to feed you beautiful garden. Also Electroculture helps keep your soil healthy and your harvest larger.
