theres enough will it start videos out there that you should know what to expect with resurrections . hydraulics are only going to add to the complexity and probability of a failure for all the reasons an old car has issues after sitting . its probably worth it to drain and filter your fluids if there was a catastrophic failure previously as the remains will still be circulating. check your wear items there probably out of spec , keep materials for hose repair on hand you will probably have a need of it . good luck with the road and the concrete keep in mind the white stuff in winter so make it wider lol. thanks for the videos.

I can totally relate, I bought a 1965 ford 5000 diesel tractor from a guy who said it was never really used and well it turned out I got the wool pulled over my eyes and she has turned into a big project to get her back to 💯, I am young and made a mistake, Hopefully everything works out with the dozer!!! Keep up the great content!

For being a novice operator on old equipment I think you guys are still coming out way ahead. This dozer is holding up well. Just fix what breaks, keep moving forward and with the repairs you should still be able to get a good price for the dozer at the end of this. Just imagine what it would cost to hire a company to come out and build this road for you. Keep that figure in mind as you have to spend money on repairs. That should help to soften the sting a bit.

Putting the costs into perspective (fuel, parts, fluid, etc) make it sting A LOT less! We've heard ballpark ranges of $500k+ to build just this section of road.

You seem very mechanical inclined I would use the dozer fixing everything as it breaks by the time you finish your driveway you should have a very dependable piece of equipment and you’ll need it for the continuous upkeep of your driveway that dozer fixed up is by far a better and more dependable piece than the newer ones

@@AmbitionStrikes Tip on cleaning the magnetic tranny screen: Blow gun on your air compressor. Works great. Then you can clean it in solvent easier.

While I was in the Army, my unit did a rotation at NTC at Ft Irwin. we "borrowed" vehicles so when we were done with training, we had to return the vehicles in pristine shape. We had an M3 Bradley go through 3 engines. We could not get the oil samples to pass. After the 4th failure the "owners" decided to handle it from there. Upon my return to Ft. Bliss, I joined the Bomb Squad so ill never have to do maintenance on a Bradley or M1 Abrams tank again. Little did I know I became the HMMWV mechanic for our EOD unit. right back in elbow deep grease. Good luck on getting that dozer fixed. I feel your pain!

Welcome to the world of heavy construction equipment. We used to spend all winter every winter maintaining our heavy equipment because we were dirt contractors. I'm so amazed Riley that you have so much skill at what you were doing and keeping your cool!!

It's amazing that you are able to fix these issues. I know that even the parts from CAT are ridiculously expensive, but being able to diagnose and do the repairs yourself. The alternatives are hauling it in for them to repair, or hire someone to come to your property, figure out what's wrong, then order the parts, come back to put in the parts, find out there is another problem, rinse and repeat. I'm sure those parts are adding up, but you got a amazing price on a poorly maintained dozer and are likely making it into a better running dozer. You're also accomplishing the primary goal of being able to get your vehicles and a cement truck on and off the property safely. I don't have the mechanical ability to do the work on the dozer that you're doing; I admire your ability.

Small tip when welding thick steel plate. Preheat the metal before you weld with a mig. By preheating it raises the overall temperature of the material, which helps with a slower cooling rate of the steel plate and the weld which helps with overall strength of the weld. 👍

If you're going to be mig welding heavy steel with that toy get some flux core wire and set up for dual shield. My advice is get some 70 - 18 stick rod. It is pretty forgiving .

Riley is an inspiration to an old man (73). If he can work six days or more fixing this, I ask myself why I keep putting off doing something simple like changing the oil and filter in my UTV. First thing tomorrow morning I am on that simple project. I'll let you all know how long it really took me vs me putting it on the back burner. Keep the inspiration going guys!

I think you need to do a (PRE-FLIGHT) every morning BEFORE you go out having fun with that 30 ton toy! Check every nut and bolt you can find to make sure everything is tight and looks like it should, as well as oil levels in the pony, and gas, engine oil in the big CAT motor, water in the radiator, grease anything that has a zerk fitting and you should have less break downs. Just some thought for you and keep up the great work and great videos. Is a blast watching your experiences. Be safe and well. Chao from Ibague, Colombia

Yes and at the least, torque everything to spec in case the previous owners didn't torque well enough. That seems to be the culprit so far on this thing.

@@straight-up-shots thx for the thumbs up on my thought of at least taking a good look at some of the critical moving parts on that dozer. I grew up on a dairy farm in Northern Wisconsin and we fixed and kept all our equipment working by making sure to check out everything BEFORE using. Sometimes you just need a big wrench with a 4 or 5 ,foot pipe on it to torq it real tight so things don't fall apart as you use them. Think of it as diagnostic testing a dozer while building a road. You should be able to upsell the machine and walk away with a road and at the end of it all - because you’ve got the ambition, persistence and talent you’ll have saved a load while improving your life greatly! I admire your grit and positive energy!!

I love the energizer bunny attitude :) This is a lot of work, but you've got at least 3 things going in your favor: 1) You have an excavator to help move heavy parts, 2) CAT should be good with supplying spare parts, 3) You two are fearless and willing to take on any challenge. You've got this!

You should cover the chrome with tape to avoid damage from spatter when welding.

Agreed, any spatter stuck to the rams will tear up the seals and score cylinders in no time. Best to tape or wrap in a damp rag.

An even easier way to cover the chrome from splatter is if you have oxy acetylene just light up the acetylene no oxygen and cover the chrome with acetylene soot.

go to a building supply buy a roll of aluminum flashing and some hose clamps. the flashing can be cut with big scissors or snips. wrap around the chrome rod and but a hose clamp or zip tie or tape. then you are 100% protected from spatter.

It’s disappointing that someone decided to kick the can down the road on that transmission just to save a few bucks, and the mechanic leaving a rag in there is probably the reason he was the lowest bid on that job. We can’t fix the rest of humanity, but we can make our little corner of it better. Well done on your amazing and determined progress so far. 1st thing I do with any new piece of machinery before getting into any heavy work (you cant help but have a little play sometimes) is do a full service, filter and fluid change. Apart from knowing that it is done, it can uncover all sorts of hidden issues. Make sure you do all pre start checks and grease at regular intervals (I grease main operational bushings/etc every 4hrs, all secondary every 8hrs).

You are doing a great job with the dozer repairs. If your pony motor ever goes bad, an electric starter will bolt right in place where the pony motor engages the flywheel. Keep up the good work. really enjoy you videos and appreciate your work ethic.

A nice addition to your broken bolt removal kit is a set of left-hand drill bits. Many times, in the process of drilling a hole for an "easy-out" the drill itself will catch and unscrew the broken stub

Love your logical reasoning for troubleshooting the pumps /torque converter. to Replacement of the bolts and the u joints was the right move. Getting the new parts filters/ fluids etc would have been the first thing to do when you got the dozer. That may have saved the converter. But judging from the rag in the filter some one was trying hide a problem with the machine. Doing these repairs will pay off as you will have reconditioned it. But the down time is a bummer. Luck was on your side that it didn’t break on the road and you were able to get back to the shop area.

Don't get discouraged, things happen. Grease parts before assembling. Don't try steering when pushing heavy material, try to make shorter straight pushes. Change the final drive oil, this is often neglected.

They seem to have good attitudes. Being positive and not getting discouraged about equipment, and everything in life is key to success and a all around good or bad day. Stay positive. When something new breaks on the dozer think positive and say oh boy what new thing will I get to learn about how to fix my dozer today. What you learn through this experience, hey you might be able to pass along to another guy someday.

Do not get discouraged. A year from now it will just be a part of the memories of developing your property. You certainly have the ability and with the excavator a torque converter change is much easier. You road is looking great, you are doing an excellent job. Do not worry about things breaking down as it is part of ownership experience..you both can fix any thing that breaks. You may want to weld a foldable ladder to the army truck so that accessing the bed of the truck is easier instead of getting an external ladder. Stay safe and stay blessed.

Hi guys sorry to see the old cat limping but think of her age and how much material she has pushed probably best that as a new operator Riley isn't pushing her hard.i would think even with the cost to fix her you would still be in front compared to bringing in a contractor ,and as a VIEWER this far more entertaining watching you guys achieve this successful new road build ,and Riley you are doing a great job on that dozer for a new operator ,and Courtney well done keeping him restrained Riley seems to be a force of nature and it's so refreshing to watch you guys in action .Love the channel Cheers Kym Adelaide

Somebody spent alot of time building up the blade wear surfaces. 300lb 7018 rod I'm guessing. This old of a machine will always be in constant repair. Keep on pushing forward. Great Content.

I hate to say it but you guys need a visit from Andrew (Camarata) and Cody (yellow Labrador). Andrew can fix anything in no time at all! If it has an engine and begins with “Bull” and ends with “Dozer” Andrew can fix it! Love this video because even though it seems like you are facing really tough odds you don’t quit. Stay at it and remember all those who came before you and faced harder times but did not quit. Love the videos!

The only I will tell you, very important, never use a hammer on new parts when reinstalling. Use a Mechanics Mallet. I knew it was the Torque converter, I feel for you.... The key is to make a Maintenance check list, by the hrs-days-weeks-monthly. Imagine the vibrations that go through this bulldozer. I'm impressed you guys can work on it. GOOD LUCK!

Can't wait for you guys to get this dozer sorted, which I know you will soon enough. Just think you are still days or a week(s) ahead of where you started with just the truck and digger. Massive progress with what the dozer has done already. As a retired operating engineer, I take my hat off to you Two(2) for taking on a D8, my hobby ranch is powered by an old Case 850B. Depending on what you paid, all your investing into the machine will return many times over. When your finished at this property, buy another property and use the equipment to develope it.

Yes, I have yet to figure out how either the old or new roads fit on their property! Would actually also love to see a still map of just the property (for safety reasons, we dont need specific location within its surroundings) with specific areas pointed out (like, Hill where concrete got dumped, area that flooded b/c there was an unnoticed swamp beside, steep section, etc)

It’s great that you have the mechanical knowledge and ability to do these repairs. What I learned over the years of working on Cat engines is that there is a built in, automatic bolt and nut backing off feature. In the interest of not having to re-do the jobs you’ve already tackled, and to hopefully prevent future needless work, buy any and all configurations of torque wrenches required. What you think is torqued FT, is Cat finger tight. Also locking plates are a good idea on U-joint bolts and nuts. It may be money well spent to schedule a field service with the Cat service department. And maybe pay for an extra hour or so so the tech can give you pointers. As you have an antique, although one with many more years of work left in it, I would ask for the oldest guy they have, someone with tear down experience on your model. Anyway, great work on the new road, and on the D8! Thank goodness those old rock pusherarounders are so clean, and easy to work on!😂🤣

I wouldn't worry about the metal on the magnets. Assuming it's been a while since they've been clean that's pretty normal. As long as you're not seeing big chunks you're probably fine

As you kids have learned and are continuing to learn, experience is the best teacher. The only way you can learn everything about that dozer is to experience everything about that dozer. Personally I think you should keep the dozer. Purely financial, how much would it cost to replace it? I don't believe you can replace it for what you got into it.

Heavy section welding needs preheat 400 deg f would be expected to prevent H2 embrittlement… And Lack of fusion …it’s a good practice Keep up the good work

I am a cat mechanic for a cat dealer in PA I use a air compressor and a blow gun to clean the metal from the magnet safety glasses are a must

So the real question here is this: Using the dozer is so much faster than what you were doing before, when you add in the repair times, is it still within the same time frame as it would have been without the dozer? If it is, I feel like you have been saying what you are accomplishing with the dozer is better than what you would have accomplished without it (eg. wider road, etc.) Regardless I think it is amazing what you are doing and I really look forward to all your videos.

Even with all of the repair time, this dozer gets more work done in a week than our excavator could do in a month!

The excavator may have been able to do the roadwork but only if the machine was seriously abused. Save the excavator for what it was designed for and it will last a long a time.

there is no comparison what a D8 can do, compared to what they were doing 10,000 fold. a no brainier. even compared to hiring out, when i did my land i rented a D8 for 3 week, after it was logged. the rental cost me $4500 cnd plus hundreds of gallons of feul// ihad to pay for repairs, well parts as i did the work

Don't give up on the dozer yet, it seems you're doing good job solving the pre-existing troubles there. Once you solve those, you have already good experience on the dozer, you probably can expect to have less troubles then. The way you welded the broken thing in blade seems pretty strong, helps to put those additional support pieces there.

Riley, use a torque wrench on everything. Hand tightening on a machine that size won't last. Loc-Tight is your friend! Much respect for your skills and drive!

Get to know your machine, walking around it daily to notice anything questionable. Quickly you’ll start seeing problems as they start, allowing for maintenance rather than repair! Great job !

Hi Riley & Courtney Wow I'm constantly amazed how Riley just pushes through each obstacle that arises You've gotten so much done on the road with the CAT so far. I believe Riley will figure this one out and you will make it to the finish line. By the time you get done using it, Riley and it are going to have such a relationship that if he has to part with it , it will be like losing a family member. The upgrades to the truck are awesome. You both are amazing! Something I noticed in a previous video: Riley opening the shield gas valve with his hand over the to of the valve. I learned in welding class that if that valve fails it will blow a hole in your hand. Love you both, be safe.

1:40 Excellent advise Courtney. Slow is Smooth and Smooth is FAST. I think in some instances or situations, you have to be gentle with that Dozer. Example, it´s made to move Soil and certain size of Rocks, maybe not Trees and other shapes. But you´re gaining the experience while building equity on your property.. just make the Dozer last to the end of the project

My farm dozer warm up routine is to check fluids, then start it, then walk around the dozer with my shovel cleaning dirt and rocks off the undercarriage, checking what everything looks like. Old machines will bite you on the arse if you just start them and jump on and begin work.

You dozer has segmented sprockets RIYLEY. LOOK INTO replacing them with the proper bolts. This will save you many hours of hard work! As for the other issues with the d8 cat that is normal with older equipment put back into hard use. Keep up your heads and continue! The money spent will eventually pay big dividends ! That d8 has lasted longer than most of modern equipment for a reason! Better steel ! Both of you are awesome 👌! Bless you both and stay safe and healthy! Try using a high-pressure air blowoff nozzle to remove the metal particles from the magnets.

Use a zip lock bag or any bad with a strong magnet. Magnet goes on the inside of the back and then go over your filter/welding magnets or anything you want to attract the metal from. Then simply remove the magnet from inside the bag and all the metal falls off. If you turn the bag inside out you capture all the peace’s. Keep us the great work and videos.
