Can a bike actually be better than a 'superbike'? Could there be such a thing as a 'hyper bike'? Si took a non-UCI legal triathlon bike for a ride to investigate whether these are indeed the future of cycling...

Totally agree. The discussion around recumbent is often viewed by people who don't ride them or understand them. There are pros and cons with both types of bike (or trikes) and getting the right balance about what you want is the thing to understand; the best cycle is the one that suits your needs the most effectively. My personal experiences are very positive but I understand why you wouldn't want one! A proper discussion and review of many of the different types may help people understand why. Speed and climbing? The engine is always the most important bit. However I do frequently surprise those who don't know the recumbent ways.

I have a similar idea. Gonna be using an open mold aero frameset to build up my city bike. Love the super aero look of TT frames. Gonna probably size up a frame to get a taller headtube and just run a slightly shorter post and stem. I also prefer flat bars with a lil bit of ride to drop bars. Haven’t decided on drivetrain yet, thinking 1x12 but 2x12 is also compelling. Gonna try and find something with a good amount of tire clearance and run nice wide tires so I can avoid the streetcar tracks plus let me do a bit of gravel riding. Disc brakes should also offer nice all weather braking performance plus with a fatter tire that can handle the wet and gravel it’ll definitely be something I can ride almost all year round. May go the track frameset route but they have even lower headtubes and other issues to overcome. Would be cool to get ridiculously aero though. Seat tube angle may be an issue but can always flip the post around to slacken it out or get a fork with a longer axle to crown. Interestingly enough I think I may have found a crankset option that’s lighter than a road crank. Far East cycles titanium flatland bmx cranks. 19mm 48 spline. 445 grams for the cranks without sprocket. Profile or similar spline drive spider or bolt but spline drive is better. Find a nice chainring. Now8 carbon nylon flat pedals at 220 grams a pair for 50$. Cranks spider sprocket and pedals is probably sub 600$ Canadian while also being like 33 ounces or so complete with a single ring set up. Double ring set up is also possible. To adapt the bottom bracket use a profile racing pressfit bb30 or one of the other two options to convert it to a euro basically. Even if it’s not the lightest it should be a nice strong crankset that should be more reliable then carbon and not rust in salty winter conditions. Plus with a nice anodized spider raw ti cranks and a raw ti chainring you could match your hubs to the spider along with a few other bits then black everything else out with carbon or black aluminum bits and have a sharp bike. Add a few ti bolts for the final touches

For what it's worth, a lot of sports have similar rules. NASCAR has strict profiles for the outer skin, for the intake geometry, etc. Formula 1 has same, and even more-so after the domination by Ferrari in the 90s and early 00s using electronic/pneumatic-everything, combined with $300M+ in wind-tunnel testing alone (more than some teams spent on their whole program). Even firearms competitions have classes for "production" handguns that must fit within a physical box and weight limits. In an era that is so technology rich, while the rules can be cumbersome, I think the spirit to maintain human competition while still allowing some variation in kit is a problem we will continue to struggle with for some time. It would be nice to say "everyone rides the exact same bike then it's truly man vs man!" but our physiology is so different, there still has to be considerable fitting.

Videos are getting better and better. This is tops. You are becoming more relaxed and confident in your delivery ...and humour and personality are starting to emerge which adds considerable charm to the equation. Plus, when you are obviously enjoying yourself and speaking from the heart, you lose the vocal affectation of lowering your voice by an octave at the end of each phrase (vocal fry)...which is a bit unnecessary and suggests a status anxiety that clouds and detracts from an otherwise compelling and informative style and presentation. Bravo. Subscribed.
