3 жыл бұрын

Everything was perfect - sun shining, no wind, perfect surf and a campsite right on the beach. Vance even handled the hectic dirt road in like a champ! Not bad for a 1982 VW T3!
You might even say it was too good to be true...because three days in we had to rush Glenn to the hospital for a serious surf injury.
Despite the hiccup, camping at Red Bluff on Quobba Station was magical! We hope you enjoy this one, and we'll see you on the next one as we continue our journey up the coast.
See you on the road,
Kendall and Glenn

Hey guys, hope you enjoyed this one! Just to clear things up as to why Kendall hasn’t driven Vance - we don’t want her to learn on Vance because learning stick is hard enough as it is, let alone on a 40 year old car with a tricky gearbox, no power steering and the fact that it’s on the other side of the car and road than she’s used to. She will be learning on a friend’s car up in Exmouth soon so we’re ready for any emergency. Thanks so much for the support and for joining us on our journey! - Kendall and Glenn

Many here won’t understand that old rear engined VW’s have a really vague and loose gear action that takes a lot of time to get used to and hard enough for someone whose been driving manuals for a while they also get thrown around a bit by the wind and barely keep to the speed limit.. Let alone on the wrong side of the dirt road. Saying that Kendall I reckon you will be just fine after a few laps around the block in another car

Kendall should learn to drive Vance BECAUSE it's the 40 year old van with all of those things you mentioned... It's not that hard... SHE CAN DO IT..!!!! What would be the point of learning in a friend's manual then having to try and drive Vance if another emergency arose? Just my opinion based on lesson's learnt Hope you are feeling better

Feel your pain - literally. Had to make the drive back to Carnarvon sporting a gnarly Red Bluff injury. Hospital was an adventure in itself but the quality of care was exceptional. Well done for keeping the spirits up and kicking on, takes more than that to decide to pack it in from such a beautiful place and the effort it takes to get in.

Don't stress about the driving, hindsight is 20/20. Looks like you'll come good and have a wild scar everyone is going to ask you about. Spend your free time healing thinking up good stories as to how you got it: knife fight in Alice, near miss with a croc in Darwin, headbutt from Tony Lockett one night at the pub, etc.

I know I am late to this party, but two things, first, have a few butterfly bandages in your kit. And perhaps some hydrogen peroxide so you can wash out a wound. Second watch for infection, these deep wounds can be nasty. What you are looking for is red streaks pointing toward the wound. And/or a high body temperature. If you have either, high tail it back to the ER/clinic. DO NOT DELAY and wonder if it will get better on it's own. IT WILL NOT. Also it was excellent that you let it bleed for a bit. Glenn was not losing blood to the point of bleeding out, and it flushed the wound. On learning to drive Vance, I know Kendall can do it! I taught my daughter to drive my van, it's much easier than you think. Key is starting in 1st, not third. The plate on the floor of these vans has a lot of play in it and my daughter kept putting it in 3rd, then easing the clutch and stalling out. Took me a bit to realize what she was doing. Once she got the pattern down we did some small hill starts, ie stop on a slight incline and then start up the hill without rolling back. (1/2hr of practice and she was good.) Steeper hills, use the hand brake to help hold. Driving on the left, just remember, you as the driver want to be in the center of the road, not over near the edge. Also these vans have a huge clutch. It can take a beginning driver popping the clutch, or feathering it and not get wrecked. So don't worry if you "stall out", "grind a few gears", "miss your shift". Soon it will be like riding a bicycle, and you will be off and running. Sorry that Glenn hit his head and you all had to take a rest. Sometimes that's what the world sends you, a strong message to rest and take it easy. Looking forward to your next update and watching as Glenn's face turns from purple to yellow as the body moves the dead blood cells away from the injury and reprocesses them!
@KendallandGlenn
@KendallandGlenn 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary, Glenn has actually had 12 split heads (not sure weather that's a good thing or a bad thing haha) so we did have butterfly clips, sutures, cleaning fluid etc. and are pretty well equipped with handling it thankfully. And it has healed up excellent! And yeah as for the manual learning, it's such a big jump for someone who hasn't driven a car in over 4 years, and has only ever known left hand drive cars, and only automatics. And as you would have seen in the previous episode, our gearbox cooked it as it was dodgy as, so it had to be replaced and we are still feeling out the new one. Combined with no power steering it becomes quite the task to just jump in and learn when we are planning on learning on an easier car and then transitioning over to Vance, it's just unfortunate timing of this injury. Not really in a position to miraculously find another gearbox anytime soon. haha. Thanks for following along and for the tips :)

@garyp.7501 3 жыл бұрын
@@KendallandGlenn Power steering is over rated! These vans have a wonderful turning radius. Just get her moving forward and turn the wheel as she goes. And it will build up Kendall's guns! I totally agree that learning to drive in "someone else's car" is a great idea. And last night I was thinking about how I rely on my right arm, being right handed to do the shifts and how if I had to switch to my left arm it might take me a bit to get it correct. Anyway good luck to ya. And glad that the wound is healing up well... battle scars!
