Taylor Cavanaugh's life is a rollercoaster of highs and lows that would put most action movies to shame. This San Diego kid dreamed of becoming a Navy SEAL from age seven, but his path was far from straightforward. Despite multiple arrests, fights with police, and faced several years in prison!
Taylor somehow made it into the elite SEALs. But the drama didn't stop there. After getting kicked out for steroid use, he hit rock bottom, living in his car. In a twist no one saw coming, Taylor then became the first - and so far only - former Navy SEAL to enlist in the French Foreign Legion.
This week's Urban Valor episode pulls no punches, diving into Taylor's wild ride from troublemaker to elite warrior to homeless vet, and finally to a groundbreaking role in another legendary fighting force. It's a raw, real-life tale of grit, mistakes, and unexpected comebacks that you won't want to miss.

00:38 Early Life
29:38 Learning to Be A Seal

My cousin did 30 years in the legion. Disappeared when he was 19, the French embassy wouldn't tell his parents anything, then sent them a postcard from Corsica after six months. Travelled around the world, became an instructor, ended up being busted from sergeant to corporal for sleeping with his CO's wife. Now retired in the French countryside on a full pension.

Looking back and thinking about it I've come to believe that the process doesn't produced better soldiers because it doesn't measure one's ability to perform military duties. What's measured is what this guy says - how much torture and fear the individual is willing to endure to satisfy his desire for self-proof and recognition. I even came to suspect that it's often the most flawed and insecure individuals who make it to graduation.

I thought about joining the legion. I signed up 6 months after 9/11, was in the Iraq invasion. Then my younger brother joined. Went with us on our second tour Iraq. He got killed by a suicide bomber while in guard duty in Baghdad. I didn't reenlist after that. Got my honorable discharge, went home. Got on drugs. Drinking. Getting in trouble. I hated not being in the military. I missed it. But messed up too bad. Couldn't get back in. Thought about joining the legion. Kept self-destructing. Then i wasn't in good enough shape. I kept getting worse. And it just never happened. Still, as i write this, im 45 now. All that goes through my head is combat. I hate being a civilian. I suck at it lol. I finally got my 100% from the VA. Got married. And taking it day by day.

This is exactly what i needed to listen to, at the exact time I needed it. Thank you. Had an "eventful" childhood. Ran away for my own sanity, got into bad situations, but always had God kicking me in the balls and sending someone to help pick me up and show the kindness I needed. And yes, family (and close friends) usually hold you back due to people's subconscious desires to hold people around them back to feel better about their own mess. I thought something was wrong with me after dealing with enough crap, because I found it too easy to just shut myself off from people that posed no benefit to my growth. Been in a slump lately due to previous hurt resurfacing, and letting something like that get a hold on you makes you dig yourself into a bigger hole. Started forcing myself to get productive, creating the means to get myself back on the road to my purpose. It's been a hell of a bumpy ride, but I guess it makes for some good stories to help others not make the mistakes I did.

As a young man I made the huge mistake of getting a DUI. Worst mistake of my life. The judge decided to make an example of me and it ruined everything I ever worked for. The judge actually just wrote all the new super strict DUI laws in my county and I was one of his first "examples". I lost all my money, my car, my license, 3 years in prison(finally got that suspended) and all types of other shit. No one was hurt btw. I did wreck my car. Nothing serious. A bump. To make a long story short I lost my company I worked my ass off to start. I new I was joining the army since I was a kid. Me and all my friends had a date we were going to sign up because a few of us had other stuff to take care of before hand. We all did 4 years marine ROTC and trained every single day. It was our life. I got the DUI in the middle of everything with my recruiter. I got to watch all my friends leave without me. That killed me. That one mistake of getting behind the wheel caused a ripple effect that lasted for over 15 years. 10 years after I had everything worked out a sheriff shows up at my door and says they have a warrant for my arrest. Take me in and finally 3 days later they figure out what's going on. They said I failed to go to my AA classes so that nothing counted and I get the original punishment of 3 years. I did do the classes btw and even had the original paperwork but they wouldn't except it because that group no longer meets and theirs no way to prove i didn't forge it. My lawyer said he's never seen nothing like it along with everyone else I talked to. They dropped the 3 years for 1 year probation, a ton more fines, and 96 hours community service. The reason I'm telling this story is because if you're thinking about having a drink then driving somewhere you better think again. I changed radio stations and bumped something and this is what all came from it. I'm not saying this wasn't my fault btw. I take full responsibility of getting behind the wheel. Just think about what it's gonna cost you.

@@Evrydyryder It was not only bootcamp, this regiment was the training school for all the french marines, there were 4 companies that were dedicated to train soldiers. Still, no matter how many times you covered for them, swept stuff under the rug, stood up for them, they would break every chance they were given. In the end they all came to ruin.

He is an example of his strength becoming his weakness.
