Today we talk about quantum computers that are really good at guessing, room temperature superconductors, again, how we changed the tilt of Earth’s axis without noticing, the environmental impact of the metaverse, a computer chip that mimics the human eye, whether smart drugs actually make you smart, how carbon dioxide emissions look like, flying taxis, an announcement of an announcement, and of course, the telephone will ring.

Well, generally it's only actually a problem if the *writer* doesn't know what they're talking about. Furthermore, there are plenty of experts with interesting things to say for videos like this but who have no interest or ability when it comes to talking in front of the camera - or the reverse. Funnily enough, It's fine to have a team of people doing both jobs. Contrary to popular belief, you don't actually have to be good at everything - although it's nice to have people who are.

Knapsack is known in theory of computing for scaling extremely poorly, meaning more work will give you hardly better results. It's also known for resisting "smart" approaches, meaning more work is essentially the only way to improve results. This study has done more to confirm the hardness of knapsack than it has to evaluate drugs. Why didn't they use a standardized test for cognitive performance? Well, the test they *did* pick gives a clue.

If I could guess, the NANOGrav paper to be announced tomorrow will probably be on primordial gravitational waves (expansion shockwaves) from the early universe. The team compiled about 17 years of pulsar arrays radio signals data to compute gravitational waves that are more sensitive than LIGO or Virgo. Nobody that has actually experienced reality wants to live in a metaverse. Taking LSD and riding bicycles down steep mountainsides is living. Good nutrition, sleep, and exercise would fix most of the worlds problems. Pollution can easily be solved by stopping politicians from being able to accept money form private entities. The hole in the ozone layer was almost completely closed in 2020 until dipshit politicians decided lift regulations on what gets released into the air. The so called "metaverse" is part of a bigger agenda.

If you think about it. Humans actually moved the planet? Sounds a bit ridiculous when one considers the forces involved. .. Presumably all in a similar direction for maximum effect. ... What about tsunamis earthquakes maybe even hurricanes or tornadoes. All these exert huge forces - much larger than human activity could muster. .. Could they not also contribute to destabilising the earth's rotation.

Thanks, amazing video! but i think the bit about quantum computing was worded a little bit misleadingly. Algorithmic complexity improvement IS the reason for quantum advantage. We can solve most problems on classical computers, but there are a lot of problems for which complexity is exponential, and for some of these problems quantum complexity becomes polynomial. (or sometimes from polynomial to logarithmic). So the paper is new for its demonstration, but the overall picture is at the root of quantum computing

@jpt3640 it works exactly the same, even though some of the bits fly past too fast to log on most oscilloscopes. But sure, given an expensive oscilloscope you can look at the bits on a PCIe bus or DDR4. The point is that when we see a picture of a quantum computer we just see some plumbing. No obvious storage, no computing core, no IO

@@olegil2: Quantum computers are all a bit more like microcontrollers than conventional computers right now, not because they necessarily want that, but instead because they just can't get quantum effects to stretch far enough to do very much else. Storage is especially thorny, as they just can't get the quantum states to last long enough to justify discrete quantum storage devices.

I'm a bit confused by the first piece (Quantum algorithm). Isn't the point of all of the quantum computer algorithms to be _asymptotically_ better due to QFT/hadamard transform/whatever else they naturally do better? Is it indeed the first time it was demonstrated in practice?
@svachalek

I don’t get it either. I thought the scaling effect she described is exactly what “quantum advantage” comes from. I don’t understand quantum enough to say for sure but I suspect it will never compete with conventional logic for linear operations like arithmetic.

Large volumes of water evaporates from the oceans and forms huge storms that deposit large volumes back onto land were it eventually refills the underground reservoirs. If we pump out faster than the rain can replenish then it might be an issues in some areas but where I live in Florida the ground water gets replenished pretty quick when we aren't having a drought. Coastal areas I have lived on haven't changed noticably.
