Nice video Rodney. I like that you included all the not so productive days, because the non stop action videos kind of promote the meat fishery aspect of it. Chinook fishing has been a bit unusual for me this year. Got about 5 or 6 jacks at the beginning of the season and 100% adult fish ever since. Many on roe, but surprisingly also many on jigs. Seems like every time I try to target some coho with a jig I get a big spring on instead. Fighting a big adult on a little twitching rod is a bit of a challenge, feels like the rod will break every time.

Another very nice video. Those spring jacks really put up a fight. A question regarding barbless hooks, what is acceptable, bent down barbs, or must the barb be ground off? Thanks! Hope to see you on the Vedder
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick, having the barb pinched down is acceptable. The hooks which I am using, Owner Hooks, have reasonably soft barbs, so I find that I don't need to pinch too hard to make sure they are fully pinched. You can also buy barbless hooks. Owner makes these "No Escape" barbless hooks, which are also good. I use either those, or pinch the SSW all purpose hooks. Fishery officers mainly want to see an effort when checking barbless hooks. As long as they see that you have made an effort to do a good job, then it's all good.

Hi Rod, thanks for this video! Looks like salmon roe is a very successful way to catch salmon but messy. Iis there a reason you don’t use roe bags
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill. My preference is roe pieces even though it's messy because it's just what I have been using in the past two decades. Roe bags would work and probably work just as well, so it really is just a personal preference and what brings more confidence. Lately, I have discovered beads are working almost as well. Near the end of this video I threw on the bead and it was literally on the second cast the float was buried. I'm looking forward to experiment more with beads instead of having messy hands while I fish. :)

Hi Rod, thanks for the great video. Is the chinook fishery always this good every year? I’ve been fishing in the canal for the last three weekends and caught chinook every time, really surprised and started wondering if this is because we are having a better than normal return this year, or I’m just having beginner’s luck. Also do you cure frozen eggs? I heard that they’re weaker than the fresh ones.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Wade, we've had an exceptionally good return of chinook salmon in the Chilliwack/Vedder River due to some changes/increase to the productions. I've written a summary of these changes about a week ago and you can find it at: facebook.com/fishingwithrod/posts/399219724896850 I always cure my eggs fresh, then I freeze them. My frozen cured eggs can usually last a couple of years in the freezer.

Hey Rod, Fellow fisherman here! Just wondered what section on the vedder your at around minute 14 of the video? Also would this be a good spot for fly fishing and if so what’s the best technic for fly? Thanks
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vince, I don't identify the locations in the videos because they are watched by too many people. These spots are reasonably easy to figure out with some digging around. The lower section of the river from the Vedder Crossing down has many good fly fishing spots. I would find some pools where water is moderate to stagnant, they are more likely to hold coho salmon. As for techniques, someone else would have to answer that as I don't really fly fish too much for salmon. Good luck!

These chinook salmon do colour up fairly fast as well once they are in the river for a week. The ones you see in this video, especially on that last day, were caught pretty close to the end of the river where it enters the Fraser River so they’d only been out of the ocean for a day or two.

Hey Rod, great video as always! I landed a “jack” this year but it was 65cm and 7lb. I know on the paper it’s “adult chinook” but it more looked like jack to me. Hope you’ll have good salmon season!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
The hatchery manager and I had a conversation about this a couple weeks ago, that it's not unusual to we encounter specimens in these sizes. They can be either big jacks or small adults. This year there is a much higher abundance of them, which suggests that they are big jacks, from the doubling of productions in 2019. facebook.com/fishingwithrod/posts/399219724896850 Pretty good coho salmon fishing season so far. Any tips to target just Springs? All I been hooking onto is Pinks
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
If you are repeatedly catching pinks, then you are not fishing in waters where springs are. That would be tip #1, change spots, cast a bit further out, look for deeper sections of the run, stay away from the schools of pinks. Use bait us has roe or BnR soft beads. Play with your float depth constantly until you get it right.

Hi Christoph, sorry for not replying sooner. I know all about how expensive transporting fishing rods can be between here and Europe since I used to do that all the time when flying to Denmark via Frankfurt. 😂 Just recently, we had a Danish visitor who brought over a four piece baitcasting rod for float fishing and I thought it looks quite good. How do you cure your roe so that it stays so nice on the hook haha, mine all fall off the skein after like 4 casts. Although for only having cured roe twice I don't think they're that bad
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Here is my curing video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrlmob2n373Qp4U.html The drying part is critical. It's too soft because it didn't dry enough/properly. If you find your roe too soft, you can also tie them into bags like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/epd9iZSls7mYoac.html Both roe chunks and roe bags work great for chinook and coho salmon.
@jordann2835
@jordann2835 2 жыл бұрын
@@FishingwithRod yeah I've been trying the roe bags, it makes the roe last a bit longer but in the end the roe just disintegrates or something 🤷. I guess I didn't dry them long enough, since I did watch your video on how to make them.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the drying part is bit of a learning curve and the amount of time requires really differs from one person to another, since humidity can vary etc. If it is not dry enough when you use it, just air dry it some more when you get home. More often than not you can salvage it. The roe you use in roe bags also doesn't have to be perfect, and they can work just as well as the roe pieces without the bags.

Curious, with Coho, I see many using spoons, jigs, and bait like eggs whether real or artificial, but curious as to Chinook on the Vedder etc, is using eggs on floats the main way most target Chinook or are spoons also a "go to" way of catching them up there?
@FishingwithRod

You do get the odd chinook salmon by casting spoons but majority of the fish are caught by drifting eggs.

@@FishingwithRod Thanks Rod, that is what I thought and asked because i am considering a spinning reel purchase when throwing spoons/spinners and wasn't sure how often a Chinook might go for it rather than Coho that I would mostly be trying to target up there....thank you for your reply

@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Casting spoons and spinners can be really effective for coho, but you’re pretty limited to when and where you can use that technique. For example, between September 1st and the end of October, I probably use my baitcasting/float setup 90% of the time while the remaining 10% is used for spinning.

Can you recommend some good wader and shoes for winter?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love my Simms G3 Guide breathable waders. Here's a video of me talking about them: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbiGZMansbqalmw.html They are not cheap, but you do get what you pay for. For wading boots, I have the Simms guide boots, but what I recommend is for you to go into the stores, and actually try out different brands and models until you find a pair which makes your feet happy. When it comes to boots, the more expensive ones aren't necessarily the best ones. Also for the waders, there are cheaper products available, Simms has a line of waders called Tributary which is worth looking into as well. With the G3 Guide waders I have, I don't feel like I am taking off a load of weight when I take these waders off at the end of the day. They are comfortable, and pretty durable if you take good care of them.

as someone who wants to get into fishing this season, where do people even find spots like these? I've been a couple times on the Vedder and it's always packed

Honestly, just walk a bit and quiet spots are readily available.

Yeah you want to be looking for the right waters. Walking speed, 3 to 5ft deep, different sizes of rocks from pebbles to head-sized rocks for cover.

Why are some of these fish called spring jack, when it’s the end of September..? Wouldn’t they be fall chinook..?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Because in British Columbia we often refer to all chinook salmon as "springs". The correct term would be chinook jack, or fall chinook jack as you mentioned.

Where is this location of the river? Is this place close or next to the hatchery?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
There’s over 50km of fishable banks along the Vedder River, and four or five different spots are featured in this episode. I’d suggest that you just head out there, pick an access spot, walk and explore.

Why do you call them spring jacks?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 ай бұрын
Here in BC, chinook salmon are commonly called springs, mostly because they are the first salmon species which enter the river, as early as March and April during spring time.

Must be some gillnets in the river no adults to be found eh?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
No gill netting going on in the river. There have actually been lots of big adults throughout this season. You're not seeing them in this video because I unintentionally don't target them as I am not fishing the type of water where the bigger ones swim in.

Watch on the hook fishing on you tube! True reel people with regular fishing equipment!
