Indeed, “le bâtard” (bastard, so) corresponds to a form of bread still sold a few years ago, but difficult to find today. Identical in the recipe to the Parisian bread or baguette, it was differentiated only by its size and weight, between that of a baguette and a one-kilogram loaf. Hence, this strange name of “bâtard”. Jacques Dutronc was already making fun of it in the 60s in one of the verses of his song “Il est cinq heures” (“It is five o'clock”), a song about the wake-up of Paris in the morning.
