Have you ever seen someone take on a project that blows your mind and you wish more people could see? Tune in as I interview my buddy Chris and talk through the two kids bikes he completely restored from failure to full shred sleds. The bikes started as stock Scott Sparks (one 20 inch & one 24 inch) and were stripped down, cleaned out, repainted, and rebuild with premium parts!
Interested in buying one of these beautiful kids bikes? E-mail your offer at dailymtbrider@gmail.com

So you missed something that seems like a good thing to discuss.... The original bikes had rim brakes and the rebuilt ones had disk mounts. Also Axles can be a issue too
@DailyMTBRider
@DailyMTBRider 3 жыл бұрын
I'll get Chris to jump in on this issue - I believe both frames could accept either
@chrissmith2729
@chrissmith2729 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, those are 2 things that are very worthy to discuss. The 24 in had disc tabs but the 20in i had to use a product that adds disc mounts to the rear axle. The rear axle spacing is different because of this and disc hubs are very expensive in the stock width which is 130mm vs 135. In my research on the forums that was a question I had but be abuse others were using it with no problems I just went with it and the brakes and shifting work very well

I've been building my 9 year old daughter a Specialized gromhit 24" wheel bike for the last two years. It was a little big when we got it but doing it with her and showing her how it all goes together and works. Is what i'm hoping will be life long knowledge for her. We've kept it fully rideable the whole time with just individual component upgrades. She doesn't know she has Magura MT Trail brakes coming for christmas with the blue rings and clamps to match her bike and be similar to her old man's MT7 brake set. With better, higher end components and going tubeless we've dropped close to 8 lbs off her bike. That's a world of a difference when you weigh 62 lbs. Great video, love seeing this.

Great video guys and some beautiful rebuilds. Just bought my son a Commencal Ramones 24 inch. Was considering putting a air fork on it but it has a rigid for with a straight steerer. Having a tough time finding a 24 inch air fork with a straight steerer that would work. Any thoughts?

Hey all, some things that people have been asking is about the weight. Both bikes weigh about 25lbs fully configured with pedals. So fairly decent. The other concerns were co veering to disc. The 24 inch was easy because it had tabs already for disc in the rear. The 20in required an adapter. I used the a2z uni brake adapter that others had used on the same frame. The dropouts on the bike were flat and worked really well for this adapter.

Great build, Chris !! Loved the walk-through on the bike build. I just wish you guys showed how you adapted the brake system from V-brake to disc brakes, specifically the caliper mounts on the rear triangle. Is there an adapter for that ?

@TheMushingMountainBiker

Awesome project builds! What's the final weight of each bike? And I noticed they were (both?) originally v-brakes. Obviously the new forks solved the disc caliper mount issue in front, but what did you do for the rear? I've seen some scary diy weld jobs on steel frames, but these looked much more polished :D I got lucky on my son's 20" bike and it came with mounts for both types and disc ready wheels, so I was able to pick up a set of Shimano 396 brakes to refurbish and cut down hoses for a quick upgrade. He had a pedal malfunction recently that ruined a crank arm, so we also went with the Spawn cranks - I wouldn't have minded finding something even lighter in anticipation of little sis taking it over eventually, but for finding something during Covid I'm really happy with the price and it being a narrow-wide chainring!

My son is 3 and the main thing with kids bikes is the weight, he got given a little paw patrol bike which is nearly as heavy as my steely plus tired xl hardtail. Now has a frog bike and it just feels like a pure quality product. Currently building my wife a hardtail so will do the same for him once he starts properly riding.

Awesome video Josh. Your neighbor seems to be muy simpatico. But I'd really like to know the total weight of the bikes. Because as you mention this is the key for the kids to have fun on their bikes. Here in Austria we have the brand Woom bikes who just started to make good mountainbikes, high quality super light. My kids both have early rider trail bikes, and they love them. Very light and high quality too.
