@@menonra30 It's always referred to as 'Irish' by Irish people, not Gaelic. And not only did the British stamp it out, the Catholic church helped. It was more useful to them that Irish people spoke English so they could indoctrinate more people.

@@itsonlysound Yep, it's called "Irish" in English and "Gaeilge" in Irish. They do still teach it in schools in an effort to regain what English oppression/colonisation destroyed, but it's sad that still hardly anyone speaks it. My dad (who left Ireland at 18) can speak it very, very basically.

4:45 translation: 'well, friends, how are you?' (didn't understand the other part) then she said 'be careful, be careful' yes... irish is a language lol. the name of it is 'Gaeilge'. when england colonised ireland, they banned the use of gaeilge, so now its become a pretty dead language. there's still quite a few of us who are still fluent tho - me for example. lá maith agaibh! (have a good day!) and fun fact: ireland is one of the oldest recorded languages, it influenced many other languages, including spanish! if you ever catch yourself in ireland, you'll see the irish language everywhere. it's on every sign in the republic above english. im actually surprised you guys haven't heard any of the cliche irish phrases like 'póg mo thóin'

One way to destroy a culture is to obliterate its language. It's the same reason Native American children were forced to use English in the boarding schools.

If you are in the Republic of Ireland, the signs are in both languages, with Irish first, English second. I spend several months in Dublin for work and on Saturday or Sunday morning, there was a show to learn Irish. They would first say the words and sentences, and I would think I had it. But then they’d show it in writing and I’d completely lose it because Irish is not the English phonetics.

Most people in the republic or Ireland do speak some Irish but it is not usually taught in schools in the north which is where derry girls is set. Irish/Gaeilge is actually much older than English but was banned by the British when they took over which was for 800 years which is why it is not most peoples first language anymore.

“Irish” or “Gaelic” was the original language spoken in Ireland. It is one of the Celtic languages, along with Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish and others. When the British began their rule in the 12th century, one of their laws was to prohibit native languages and only allow English to be used. It has almost died out and is now an endangered language. However, in an attempt to revive Irish, Ireland promotes the education of Irish language now in the western parts of Ireland, called the “Gaeltacht” where public road signs and other uses, are in both languages and summer schools offer studies in the language. In the US, many Irish organizations and IrishFest events have Irish language programs.

The language thing is political, as everything is. :) the English stomped out the Irish language - it basically died, or went underground - it had a revival in the early 20th century and now it's part of the curriculum, a required class - but Bryce is right, everyone speaks English, although there are areas in the west where it's still spoken, and Irish language radio stations etc. all the road signs in Ireland are bilingual! one of the Oscar noms for best picture this year was that rarity - an Irish language film - the Quiet Girl! it's lovely. Sláinte!

5:05 yeh irish is a language as is scottish gaelic (Gàidhlig, not scottish that’s a different thing) and also welsh. people only started speaking english when england started colonising scotland, ireland and wales and put laws in place that made it illegal to speak all the languages (which is why scot’s developed because scot’s and english are enemies and they didn’t want to speak their language but also didn’t want to get punished for speaking Gàidhlig) but even though the laws were lifted throughout time the languages mostly died out, we still have it in certain ways (for example scotland has tv channels which only speak Gàidhlig and our street signs have both english and Gàidhlig as do our emergency vehicles) but the languages being illegal to speak for so long done irreversible damage to the languages so most speak english now, kinda sucks but can’t change history ig 🤷🏻‍♀️ (sorry for the unbelievably long comment🤣)

Time stamps and translations of what the woman says "as Gaelige" ("in irish") 4:44 "Well, a chairde! Go dté mar atá sibh?" = "Well, friends! How are ye?" In this case, "Go dté mar atá sibh" is an ulster dialect of Irish (futher south, we would use "Conas atá sibh?") Also, "sibh" is the pural you, so if you are only asking one person how they are, you would say "Conas atá tú?" for the singular you. 4:53 (i cant hear what she says here, maybe due to the cut or honestly more coz my irish is rusty as hell) 4:56 "Bígí cúramach!!" = "Be careful!" (Again, she's using plural here) This is the point most Irish people, even if they aren't fluent or forget most of their Irish, would catch on to what she's trying to tell them. I'd say there's a fair few of us who remember parental figures or teachers saying "bí cúramach!!" to us as kids ahahaha.

Irish and SCottish are both forms of Gaelic, a Celtic language, Welsh is a bit further out but also a Celtic Language, as is Cornish (Cornwall) and Breton (Brittany).. Dont confuse Scottish for "Scots" which is a weird hybridized language derived form the ENglish of the invaders to Lowland Scotland. If you were ever to visit Republic of Ireland ( as opposed Northern Ireland where Derry is) you would see everything is bilingual, much like in Canada

You didn't know Irish was it's own language? What exactly did you think it was? 😂 Irish is one of the oldest languages in Europe! It's been spoken on this island for almost 5,000 years. It was brought here by the Gaels, who were originally from the Pontic Steppe (modern day Ukraine/Southern Russia). The first Indo-Europeans to leave the Steppe, they took the Southern route along the Mediterranean through France, Spain and Portugal. The later peoples travelled through Central Europe becoming Germanic and 'Celtic'. The Gaels replaced the original Neolithic farmers who came from the Middle East and settled Ireland thousands of years before. They spoke a non Indo-European language, possibly related to Basque which is still spoken in a part of modern day Spain. About 20% of the population, mainly in the west of Ireland still carry the original 'Persian' genome. They have darker skin and black hair. The rest of us are an admixture of Gael, Iberian, Nordic and French but mostly Gael. One of the reasons red hair is still so prevalent in Ireland is because we are farthest west and north and have the highest percentage of Indo-European DNA in the world (58%). There's a wee history lesson for ye lads. Now a language lesson. What I just wrote in Irish (IRISH not Gaelic. Gaelic is spoken in Scotland). Nach raibh a fhios agat gurbh í an Ghaeilge a teanga féin? Cad é go díreach a cheap tú a bhí ann? 😂 Tá an Ghaeilge ar cheann de na teangacha is sine san Eoraip! Tá sé á labhairt ar an oileán seo le beagnach 5,000 bliain. thug na Gaeil anseo é, arbh as an bPontic Steppe ó dhúchas (Úcráin/Rúis Theas an lae inniu). Na chéad Ind-Eorpaigh a d'fhág an Steppe, ghlac siad bealach an Deiscirt feadh na Meánmhara tríd an Fhrainc, an Spáinn agus an Phortaingéil. Thaistil na daoine níos déanaí tríd an Eoraip Láir ag éirí Gearmánach agus 'Ceilteach'. Tháinig na Gaeil in áit na mbunfheirmeoirí Neoiliteacha a tháinig ón Meán-Oirthear agus a shocraigh Éire na mílte bliain roimhe sin. Labhair siad teanga neamh-Ind-Eorpach, b'fhéidir a bhain leis an mBascais atá fós á labhairt i gcuid de Spáinn an lae inniu. Tá an bunghéanóm 'Peirsis' fós ag tuairim is 20% den daonra, go príomha in iarthar na hÉireann. Tá craiceann níos dorcha agus gruaig dhubh orthu. Is meascán de Ghaeil, Ibéire, Nordach agus Francach an chuid eile againn ach Gael den chuid is mó. Ceann de na cúiseanna a bhfuil gruaig rua fós chomh coitianta in Éirinn ná go bhfuilimid i bhfad siar agus ó thuaidh agus tá an céatadán is airde de DNA Ind-Eorpach ar domhan againn (58%) Also, the Delorean factory was in Northern Ireland.
