I have so many short videos and awesome photos to post, it's crazy!
Today, we’re demolishing a small convenience store. It used to be a gas station, but a different company removed the tanks, pumps, and canopy. Removing tanks requires a whole different set of permits and licenses. So, if that's not your specialty, you're better off letting someone else do it.
For anyone wondering, the machine in this video is a Caterpillar 323 excavator.
Remember to leave lots of questions and comments everybody!!
I have a bunch more awesome demolition videos coming up soon, so make sure you're subscribed and have post notifications turned on so you don't miss anything.
Thanks so much to everyone who's been following along. I really appreciate it!
Feel free to email me anytime at homewreckerbrian@gmail.com

To what extent does it make sense to separate out different materials as you demolish the building, like metals? Or do these get separated if/when the debris is shredded at some other location?
@legohead6
@legohead6 6 ай бұрын
Cost of disposal is the primary determining factor. Scrap metal has value and is usually sold to a scrap dealer. Mixed demolition waste is very expensive to dispose of. Paying demolition waste rates to get rid of valuable steel doesn't make sense, so the easy to pick or significant chunks of steel are always plucked out. Most demolition companies don't process their waste any further then they do on site. Typically a third party waste removal company will be hired to remove and dispose of the waste from the site (what they do with after that is a whole other discussion). Some demolition companies will spend more time tearing down the building and more thoroughly sorting the debris as they go(concrete/brick, Wood, Metals, etc). More common on very large building demolitions where the disposal cost to just send it all mixed would be astronomical. Some even go as far as deconstructing certain parts of the buildings and saving things like windows, doors, fixtures, etc to resale or donate. Its ultimately a numbers game for the owner and/or demolition company.

This thing is very cool to watch. I'm back in my early grade school age, watching big equipment tearing down greenhouses surrounding our property. This type of machinery has ALWAYS fascinated me- human beings multiplying their physical strength (in essence) by hundreds - or even thousands - of times via technology. And it's just straight, linear motion via hydraulic cylinders & pistons, hooked up to levers -the excavator's arms- that combine to do work that requires enough force to easily knock down walls. Very cool.

What i do not understand is You've got a 30 year old building in good usable shape being demolished yet you look around and old 1950s gas stations in really bad shape still stand. Part of the permit possess should be evaluating a structures usefulness regardless of its area. That could have been used for other stuff like a doctors office or a dentists or even daycare. Whats going back in its place? Whats the value to the local area as is or replaced? Same holds true for building permits.

How much did you charge to scrape the site? I have commercial properties all over the country and sometimes we demo the building as it's too old to attract the great tenants. Sometimes fire departments will do a controlled burn and that can save alot on demo costs.

You seem to do a lot of commercial jobs. Is that more profitable than residential? Harder? Easier? Just different? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Here in the Netherlands it works very differently. All usable materials are first neatly removed. Then controlled demolition and sorting all materials for recycling. What's happening here is just tearing everything down. The result is an unimaginable mess that you can no longer do anything with and you have a lot of clean-up work to do.

Well if you could pay someone to strip all materials that could practically be reused you'd spend as much on labor as you would recoup from the effort. Plus this demolition is probably on a time schedule so you don't have a month to fool around doing that. Besides other than the metal you're not going to get much value from used building materials from these cheaply constructed buildings. I would assume these demo projects are more profitable the less time you take for each job and move on to the next one.

Crazy for a western European guy to see stuff get torn down like this, over here it's all sorting at the source. Wood/metal/waste/rubble it all gets separated and recycled, seems like across the pond they just throw it all in a big pile and haul it off

I'm kind of amazed at how easily this building came apart. The first bites out of the front seemed to have collapsed the whole thing. Almost kind of scary that it came apart that quickly. I was amazed at how much space the "managers office" used. Looks like theyd have used it for more retail space. I collect old phone systems and would have loved ripping out the CCTV stuff, and maybe some of the electrical. Great video. Loved the opening; going in for a final tour!
