FireWolf_8667 you are the one who sent them? You should have notified them then. Imagine someone just sends you a box of birds. You have no food you have no place for them, no experience nothing. If you sent them bc you wanted to dump them on somebody else why did you get them in the first place. I’m sure you coulda at least been able to care for them for just a few more days until these ppl at least knew they had some birds to get prepared for 🤦‍♀️ you can’t just get some animals, decide you can’t care for them and randomly dump them on someone else with zero warning. I love animals to death and I’m always more than willing to welcome new ones to my farm but I would be pissed if somebody just dropped off some birds that Ik nothing ab at my door unexpectedly. You should think ab the well being of the birds/animals in this situation before you ship them to somebody who has no idea they’re aboutta get them.

Actually this kinda cage is suitable for some small parrots. Quails actually prefer to live on the ground and they run fast. So try to provide horizontal space.

Agreed on the part of quails needing ground space. Parrots fly a lot. They need width over height as well. This kind of cage is not suitable for parrots of any size.

Yes... You're going to want way shorter cages. Something 1-1/2 feet tall with 1-2ft^2 space for each bird. Also please feed them soaked chicken starter or game bird feed. Something with 22-24% protein.

@@valshomestead8190 This would definitely be amazing for smaller birds that do a lot of flying and perching - doves, finches, pigeons, etc. I love the design of this cage! I read through the comments that these quail are a more aggressive species that need more space than more domesticated quail. I can understand why people are upset, but the sender certainly didn't mean any harm and probably thought they might enjoy some quail. I do think they should have asked first, but they don't deserve the venom being spat out in the comments. Hopefully, this cage will be a good short term solution until they have time to build a run for them. I don't see where it would cause too many issues while they are little, especially if they put a small sand box and maybe a small food tray down on the floor. Then, they will have the necessities to get them through until a run can be built.

Both of you have your hands full. Caring for children and animals. What a job that is. Bless both your heart's. I'm 63 and my husband is 66. We live in the city on acre and half. Grow massive amounts of vegetables. We have 4 cats and 12 chickens. It takes 2 hours minimum in the morning before I actually can start taking care of the garden. At the end of the day nothing like sitting back with a glass of wine. We also have a small vegetable stand in front of our house. Honor system. We actually have people that don't live in our neighborhood come to buy our vegetables. How nice is that. I could not imagine trying to care for the amount of animals you have. Great video. 👍

It's called a "para-social relationship". A complete stranger watching a video becomes so familiarised with the YTer's face that they think the YTer is some kind of close friend that they can just go and hang out with whenever. It's a weird phenomenon that can lead to some messed-up consequences. Wanting to hang out, wanting to be in videos, sending gifts, wanting a relationship, yandere-esque obsession, murder... But yes, back on topic, giving people live fucking animals without their consent first is messed up. Animals don't deserve to be dumped on people who may not want them, or may not be ready to care for them. That can only ever really lead to animal abuse/neglect, unless the people being dumped on are extremely kind. Sentient lives are not whimsical gifts.

I had a bobwhite quail as a house pet for seven years and he was the best. He loved going on car rides and hanging out with me at work. He and my German shepherd were very bonded, he would follow her everywhere, they would play together, him pecking at her teeth, she mouthing at him, he loved to take 'dust baths' in her tail, he shared her food, got excited when she got excited and would sleep in her soft fur. He loved kids and was fearless in public. As to training, he did seem to know not to poop on furniture and was safe to have up on the bed or the sofa, where he loved to cuddle with his humans. Otherwise he was not house trained but that was not an issue because the dog cleaned up after him :P But he was not really trained, just himself. Very trusting though, you could lay him on his back in your hand and he would be quite happy to stay like that. The greatest evidence of his intelligence he ever showed was one Christmas. A day before Christmas I showed him, the dog and the cat each their wrapped presents and then put them back under the tree. The next day as I was opening up the dog's gift, the quail went to the tree, grabbed a corner of his present and dragged it to me, then looked up at me expectantly. I opened up his present, but he was not impressed with the stuffed animal inside lol I had thought he would like to have something soft to cuddle up to in his cage at night, but he did not like that plush dolphin at all. He never showed interest in presents again. I hand raised him from a chick and this is what made him so trusting. The dog loved helping me raise baby animals, and was very gentle with him when he was a tiny chick, not much bigger than a bumble bee :)

Only training I did with my quail was whistling him to come to me. If Mango did come, he was rewarded with a juicy live meal worm or his favorite seeds. I agree with several comments here. They are primarily ground birds with decent flight abilities; love tall grass and being able to dive into a thick bush if they feel threaten. They love scratching in dirt, chasing each other and having sand baths. Your quail aren't full size yet, but they shouldn't get much bigger I think (your species is variant to what I had - Northern Bobwhite (which gets to the size of a large robin - but I think yours will be the size of small bantam chicken when fully grown but I could be wrong). Tennessee Red Quail have a tendency to be feistier and more aggressive than other quail species, especially if there are too many males and not enough females to go around - I recommend keeping them in pairs during the breeding season. They will need a spacious enclosure with a minimum of at least two square feet of floor space per bird. They cannot be raised in a mixed aviary with other species of birds or quail. Also quails can drown easily if given too much access to water, a shallow water source is best. An you should supplement their diet with produce and berries; bugs if you have access to them. With their feed to give them all their nutrients they need. Its nice that they sent you the birds (considering how much everything cost), but they should have reached out to you first before surprising you with live animals. Especially with all the shortages going on for supplies to build new enclosures, not to mention what you may need to care for them. Also just thought of this you may need a permit to keep them.
@CarolReidCA
@CarolReidCA 4 жыл бұрын
If they are game animals, most if not all states require a permit. I'm sure the person meant well, yet wasn't thinking about the numerous issues sending the birds unannounced creates.. is the person going to be home? Diseases in area shipped from? Are they carriers for other diseases (human & aviary) that could adversely affect the farm, how will these birds' needs affect the farm? Do people have time to take care of them? Do they need to be quarantined? OMG, So much to think about! I think I would've contacted the USDA and had them quarantined before bringing them onto my farm. That dumped a lot of concerns needing immediate attention. Permits needed to own? Are these birds legally obtained? Sad, yet all of these issues could've been addressed with a few phone calls and an email or two.

Absolutely. Animal responsibilities aren't some people's strong suit. I have a friend who runs a rescue and she get boxes of kittens dropped off and all matter of other animals from rabbits to birds. One time someone stuck their cat in her mailbox of all places. A big box for packages but come on! Could have been a cruel trick too. Thing lept out at her while collecting mail. It's horrible as the animal could have basicly cooked in there depending on weather and checking mail. She had to build 2 outdoor kitten runs to hold as many as she received. She or a worker spent time 2xs a day at least cleaning their eyes and ears for mites ect. She has a good homing rate but you run out of people that you know that wants cats or kittens especially. We found out just how important it is to get animals fixed when ours had back to back litters and even a young mom. So a friend helped us fix them all. Everybody needs to learn that lesson and understand just how bad uncontrolled animal breeding is. Thankfully the humane society started fixing them very early and very cheap comparatively to vets ect. Just 20$ to 40$. Vet wanted a first visit fee and all shots plus around 100$ to fix just one. Ridiculous. Try that with a couple litters. Okay rants over but really serious. This couole seems to do a great job.

I love these new birdies, I have several of them myself :) Although these little cutie pies are very ground oriented. While they can fly, they are the sort of birds that like to hide in bushes and stay low rather than flying up high. I had to keep them in a chicken house for a few days, and lo and behold, they were quietly sitting on the ground, totally ignoring the roosts. They also don't need nesting boxes! They are a bit longer domesticated than chickens and it is almost unheard of for quails to go broody. They will lay their eggs anywhere.

So make sure you get them some good quail food or add extra protein in their diet. My smallest is button quail and they are the smallest quail in the world. @@thewhisperingwoods5069 honestly for that number of quail the amount of horizontal space those bird have is fine. They only need a square foot per bird. So that doesn’t blow my mind at all. Quail have legs for running so I’d advise you provide more horizontal space for the quail to exercise their legs. They can be on branches but tend to prefer running. Tennessee reds are a more aggressive quail and shouldn't be housed with other quail. Because of their feisty nature, Tennessee red quails need as much space as possible, at least 2 square feet of floor space per quail, but preferably more. Free-ranging is an option, provided local regulations allow it and your neighbors don’t object.. All quails, free-range or otherwise, need a secure shelter to sleep in. A standard chicken coop should do, provided it is predator-proof. Use straw or wood shavings as bedding. My grandma had some earlier this year, they all died either due to foxes, heat, or her dog, so I would keep close watch on joey when she's near them. Keep up the great work on the farm! Ya'll are doing fantastic!

I’m soo glad you guys had an empty brooder box for temporary housing and were able to build their home in 1 day. That is about the adult size of quail, different breeds might be little bigger or smaller but probably they will stay this size . From my research, quail do some flying, but mostly run and hop around on the ground. For the amount of birds you guys have (5 to 10 - a quick count from the video), I probably would look into building them an enclosure that is about 5feet by 10feet with branches to jump on and some bushes/grasses in few areas to hide in and for nesting areas.
