In this video, we share the steps and process of drilling a well on our property, including the risks that come with the unknowns of having a well drilled. We had high hopes and expectations, but were met with making expensive decisions. We share the total cost breakdown of drilling a well. It is shocking how much a well costs, but it's one of those things that you have to have and ultimately, increases your property value.
During filming, we get a visit from the inspector and he shares some valuable information. It was great to hear and share his insight and knowledge.
Did you know we are building a barn?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
***We also built a sawmill cover and are wrapping that up (the partially enclosed shed section of the cover) this week. Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between! We are excited to complete this project this week, so we can continue milling lumber for our barn build.
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we are built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

I hate to ruin your New Years celebration but I wanted to tell you about our well which was drilled in sandstone. The drill rig was a cable tool model so we had about 2 days of pounding right next to the house. Long story short, the operator stopped at about 60 feet when he said he smelled sulphur. At this point we were getting about 2.5 GPM of nice-smelling water; which is better than a higher flow of sulphur water. Here's the part that's gonna hurt. After a few months the fines created from the drilling slowly washed out of the well wall and we now have more water than we can use; at 60 feet deep. I thought the $ 1,500 we paid for the well was a lot until I saw your video. It was a good video but............................OUCH! Dave

Oh, wow! It sounds like you have an amazing well, Dave! 60 feet and $1500 sounds like a dream! Our well cost is definitely OUCH! But, we knew it would probably be like that going in. Of course we were hoping we’d be a little luckier, but it’s what most wells around here are costing… it’s just part of building, It’s super expensive, but now we have a great well! Overall, we are happy. Happy New Year! 😀

Greg, it must feel good to have a good well even though it cost a bunch of money. Now you can proceed with the sawmill cover so you can start milling lumber for your barn. Blessings to you.

Another goal and achievement. I am blessed with a great well and water quality. I know many that haven't been as fortunate. Especially those friends of mine that live around the great California wine areas. Every year my buddies wells go dry thanks to the vineyards. It is out of control. But what do you expect from the state whenever the governor owns his own vineyards! You are blessed to be in Idaho. Be well and stay safe.

You can move 10' in any direction and get different results..it's a crap shoot. Here in Ga, it's pretty much drill and get good water supply. Neighbor man further uphill had to drill 4 holes before he got decent water. Uphill is solid granite. I am farther downhill with creek supplied by water seeping out of ground. Did bored well @ 74' with over 30' of water in it - 2 good streams feeding it at different levels. Bored while in a drought 40 years ago - guy got really excited when he saw that - said I would never have to worry about water. Paid about $1,000 back then. Location, Location, Location ! Do whatever I want with water supply.

Well drillers have drilled up to 1000 feet with lower water volume than we got. Your system seems ideal with feeder streams. We are up on a granite ridge so no flowing water around us. Thanks for watching! 😊

Our well is 200' deep. Pump is at 160'. Variable speed pump that can pump 20 gpm. I think the variable speed pump is the way to go. Soft start motor, runs at speed to maintain pressure so it doesn't start and stop. Reduces wear and tear and gives more consistent pressure. Our cost was a lot less but it was done 10 years ago and we didn't have to drill through granite. Thanks for the video

We live on top of the Floridian aquifer, which is trillions of gallons of fresh water. Our wells are usually fairly shallow, anywhere from 50 to 200 ft. The water comes from limestone formation usually.

Fantastic well! We only have 0.8 gpm and it's enough for our household use. Previous house had 1 gpm and we could even water some landscaping. Like you, we have a deep well with high static level for lots of storage. Simplifies the system when you don't need cistern storage.

I know it may seem like Monday quaterbacking but in all candor when offered a shared well at 10-12,5GPM for each party for about $50K complete I would have taken the bird in the hand, having said that I would still consider hooking up to a shared system which would be bulletproff for both familys and insure water even during maintence/breakdown of either system. Ray Stormont What's the water temp.? You could hook radient floor heat to excess flow and maintain constant floor temp in your home allowing for a greatly reduced sizing for HVAC saving you 50-75% for heating/cooling year round which would pay for well and radiant floor system in reasonable time.
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods 7 ай бұрын
For about $50K, that would have been our share only, as the well on my sister’s property is already existing and she has had it for 20 years. Linking the two systems up is a good idea for redundancy. Might be in the plans down the road… As far as radiant heat… in future videos, we’ll share how we’ve already poured our slab. Thanks for watching, Ray! 😊

At the home place in Southern Ohio our well was on a mountain top but was really more of a cistern. 20' diameter and 100' deep. Hand dug about a century ago. We connected to local water ca 1985 when they laid a nearby line but kept that for washing cars or watering plants etc. So it was shock to me to consider a well that deep drilled along with the costs. But of course what is required is location dependent based on geology and the law. Great breakdown of your thought process, the overall process, and the expense. That's definitely a major factor in that location. Did you ever consider alternatives like water collection?

Hi, KJ, pretty cool that you had/have a well from 100 years ago! It's always interesting to think about those before you who lived on the property.... 500 feet was not a surprise due to well reports from within close proximity. I lived with water restrictions for 7 years (in a village in Alaska). We had 1000 gallons of water a week delivered and picked up sewer ( different trucks 🤣). So, a dependable water system was a must. We never considered rain collection. There are plenty of families in the area that do haul water, but then getting a mortgage is a problem. Lots of things to consider when building on raw ground, for sure. Thanks for watching! 😊

At those prices, this should have been in Hawaii or just outside New York CIty or something. Wow. I remember when wells were affordable. Mine in the Northwest was drilled to 200 ft. around 1990, with casing and liner--everything except the submersible pump system--for $3,800. I had another one that was a little deeper drilled in the Midwest in 2008 for right at $7,000. In today's dollars, those prices are $9,000 and $10,000 respectively.

If you can find someone in the area that does it. You have your well fracked to try and get a little bit more flow but with the amount of storage you have in it, I don't know if it's that much of a concern

@@ourdreaminthewoods I believe they actually drop in the equipment below all your casing and seal off the well and then they pressurize everything that's below the casing up to above about 1500 PSI to get the fishers to open up
