In this video, Greg and Erik set the sonotubes for our extra bent. This bent will be for our balcony that extends over our garage. You will see that the sonotubes look a little strange but there is a plan for them - two will be 20 inches above grade and two will be 30 inches above grade. We are being preventative... if someone (probably Beth or Bo) run into the post while backing up or pulling into the garage, they will hit the cement pier, not the post.
We also get concrete into the sonotubes in this video. It's nice to have this done, so we can move onto the next project - cutting the slabe for the plumbing.
Hope you enjoy this video!
Did you know we are building our barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home.
• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
• Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Howdy y’all- great job on the sono tubes. I’d rather watch someone else pour concrete than do it myself so I really enjoyed watching the video. I wish I had an Eric…………….. Hope you have a great weekend. God bless

Very happy to see the tapping and vibration on the concrete. You'll want an immersion vibrator for any slab work but this works for the columns. Vibration should be 10 to 15 seconds. Under vibration means air pockets but over vibration starts to separate the concrete components apart which is bad too.

Hi, KJ- We are going to leave the sonotube on for now to protect them. But I am excited to see how they turned out. Having someone pour the slab for us. Thanks again for your comments and input. 😊

Little tip on finishing concrete. After you strike it off with your board and grab the trowel to smooth it off. Jiggle the trowel as you go across a couple of times then come back smooth. You can get a nicer finish like Eric likes.

What do you think of the idea of the different heights of the sonotubes? An eyesore at first, but we definitely plan on painting them to help them blend in. Hope you enjoy this video! 😁

I would have gone with 30 above grade throughout, but I have OCD when it comes to that sort of thing. 😂. Nothing wrong with differing heights from an engineering standpoint as long as the first horizontal beam is level, and honestly I think it will become something you don't even see after time. It will just blend in. Anything you paint you have to maintain, so I don't like to paint concrete. However, if you're backing vehicles in I would suggest bright yellow and reflective tape or they also make garage wall protective foam to go around the column to help protect the vehicle from the concrete.

Hi, KJ- It was a little hard for me to make them different heights but in the end you won’t be able to see the shorter ones. It’s about 12 feet between the tall ones so there should be plenty of room for a vehicle. 😁

HELLO There, CONSIDER THIS for any ( FUTURE ) Concrete projects. The Use of Separate forms, blocks, or Pads as a place to CLEAN out the Excess Mix is a Great way to Create Something out of what many just consider ( W A S T E ) This Practice HELPS way more then MOST Fully do understand in the General belief that TO much is Way better then TO LITTLE when Getting Deliveries and Paying the Bills. From a Simple Door Way Extended pad location to Actual Blocks to be used as a Path way for later on in the process. A few went as far as making Benches out of the left overs. A little bit of planning goes a very ling way when BUDGETS dictate a BIG Waste has been Let go do to PI$$ Poor G U E $$- Ti - Mations running a muck - for sure. As for the other stuff ? Its like a Jig Saw puzzle with plenty of MISSING pieces needing to be Divided up. Once long ago ( A ) Friend of a Friend who Someone ( I ) Had never met asked for some HELP. At the time it meant little more then a PHONE call to see where it might lead ? PUSH as they SAY always comes to SHOVING ( SOMETHING ) Many never thought of or were prepared to be on the list of * To Do's * as they often get labeled as . FALLING through the GAPS. Not mine * MUST * Be YOURS to Take care of ? the Battle Cry of Its always the OTHERS who say they can and then Find Excuses to be some where else I N S T E A D . Funny thing about P R O M I S E S Hopes and DREAMS REALLY are ALOT more like NIGHTMARES Without the REALITY getting so confusing. Promises of a HOT meal Cold Drinks. A Picnic type environment YET the only who actually do anything ? NOT the relatives. or neighbors or even the kids just messing around making more commotion then anything else. ten don to 4 then about 1 1/2 or 2 when its all said and done ( TOOK care of it ALL ) The ALLURE of a FREE ( SOMETHING ) Sign Me Up ( Oh Wait ) When it that then taking place ? Like the TIRED and TRUE of BORROWING others peoples tools. A rake, Shovel , Hammer, leads to nails screws, Insulation and then Tape and Caulk all coming out of YOUR own Check book as well . The PROMISE of Paying another back. Instead of the ACTS of kindness of FORWARD is the ONLY direction each should be needing to concern themselves with after all the DUST has settled. You got one like everybody else does. A Guy could be a gal or a Person who shows up without a Wallet. Credit card, Cash or even loose change to kick into the pot of plenty.
